I think I might have to try and do a ‘quick’ third run of this before the sequel comes out, thankfulness got plenty of time to do so as it’s probably going to be late 2022 at the earliest but I don’t think I can justify spending another easy 100+ hours on this with all the other stuff coming out next year

Much like with Ocarina of Time, I’m a little jealous of anyone playing it for the first time, those first few hours are really special, walking out of the shrine of resurrection and seeing the world is just  Enjoy it Cora!

That's not a growth wrote:I liked the shrines, but felt they could have been expanded upon - so hopefully the sequel builds on them.

I also enjoyed searching for the towers, as it was never a straight line and loads of distractions. It was less engaging second time around though, and I worry using the same map will miss that feeling of exploring the unknown that my first play through of the first had, and second play through was missing. But I'm staying optimistic until proven otherwise.

I dunno, if it is in a different time it could be fun as you come to area an area and be liek "oo this used to be ...." never know if it is in the future we may find Jawa still wandering around teh plateu.

Cora you jammy bastard.

I might go back to this actually, I've got the DLC to finish (Not done much of that). I'm on a second play and 90 odd hours in - I don't think there's many huge games that I'd play a second time, let alone for this long. It helps that i decided to approach the order i do things in a completely different order to the first time.

I think the shrines were a great idea and most of them work quite well, they just needed a bit more variety to the challenges within them

Some basic themeing would have been nice, just to match the area they were in.

I enjoyed the shrines. They were spaced out well enough so didn't feel overly repetitive to me. But it did take me 125hrs to complete the base game.

Yeah I imagine if someone were to "mainline" the shrines and just do them one after another without many other distractions then that would exacerbate their issues, but spaced out across a more "normal" play of the game I think they get away with the repetition fairly well.

Yes. And thanks to the joys of stream schedules, I can only do a few hours a week so this will probably last me the rest of the year. So far it's really challenging ALTTP and the N64-era Zeldas for the title, which I honestly thought was impossible at this point. I've never played anything like this before.

Current more in-depth thoughts are:

- It's very Ghibli-esque in places. I found a Great Fairy last night and we were talking about just how much she looked like a couple of characters from early Ghibli movies. But then we also kind of came to the conclusion that, whether intentional or not, there's always been a kind of parallel running between Ghibli's aesthetic and some of Zelda's design elements. This isn't a bad thing. If anything it probably explains why I took to Ghibli films so easily.

- This extends to the music, which is fantastically minimalist. I love the references to things like the chest-opening theme within the game, all done on a piano. Really, really impressive stuff.

- There are some genuinely wonderful nods to classic Zelda moments and characters that I've already noticed so far. For example, a Cucco finding mission in Kakariko that was very similar to its N64 counterpart. I also noticed when I unlocked the piece of map with Zora's domain that there are areas named after Princess Ruto and (maybe) Jabu Jabu.

- I legit didn't realise first person aiming was through motion controls, because I stupidly didn't realise the Switch still had motion controls.

- Visually this might be the most stunning game I've ever played. The big project now is to increase stamina to the point where I can climb a mountain and glide off the edge, just to see the world. It's an honest to God joy to run around in. The only other open world game I've been anywhere near as impressed with is Spider-Man's rendition of Manhattan, which is much smaller.

- Overall, it feels like a genuine evolution of the series for possibly the first time in two decades. Ocarina pushed into 3D and set a template for adventuring within the world that was followed by most of the mainline home-console games since - Majora's Mask, WW, TP and SS are all completely indebted to that formula. This still carries the series hallmarks as far as I can see(compass point villains, desert/mountain/forest/river, you know the drill), but it feels like Ocarina did - bringing those hallmarks and that sense of "Zelda" into an entirely new place.

I'm really, really impressed. Maybe I'm a bit easier to impress as I've always loved Zelda and was desperate for this to be as good as I've been told, but it's really blown me away.

The shrines seem like bite-sized mini dungeons to me and I'm totally fine with that at the moment. I'm gonna thrash out a few to get some spirit orbs for stamina and hearts, so we'll see if they hold up to that.

If you have any Zelda themed amiibo, give those a go when you can. They drop chests with items, but some give you some cool unique outfits.

The gyro aiming is amazing in this too, coupled with a bow it's just so accurate.

Remember you can always cook things up to increase health or stamina temporarily

SAdly the only Amiibo I own is a Captain Falcon. Not sure how I'd feel about FALCON PUNCHing my way through Breath of the Wild.

And yeah I know, I think I just want to be able to permanently explore the world and not have to think about recipes and stuff. Seems like the best option for exploration is to go down the high stamina route as well? Better to be a few hearts short of a full complement but be able to absolutely rocket about the place!

I massively favoured putting upgrades into stamina in the early stages, the game is very much about exploration so any increase in stamina or gear that helps with that in other ways was always my focus!

I found two complete stamina wheels to be the sweet spot. You can re-spec later if you change your mind though.

Oh god, going through my old tweets about this has made me want to carry on. It's so good.

It's definitely one of those very special games. There's a certain feeling you get, particularly in the early stages, when you are playing something that you just know is an "all time great"

Honestly got that vibe straight away when I walked out of the shrine of resurrection. Seeing the world open up like that was like a better version of leaving the sewers in Oblivion. Just awesome. I haven't really gotten a handle on the combat yet but I'm guessing it'll click into place when I have some decent weapons and a good shield.

The alternative routes thing Errkal mentioned is a great point - I found the first memory by gliding into a cold section with no appropriate gear and hiking, with great difficulty, through some tundra before having to sneak by what looked like a giant centaur. Turns out I could've just walked up to it from the western side.

Yeah the gyro was used perfectly in this, using it to tune and tweak aiming was great, it was just enough motion control to add to the experience without ebing too much that it felt gimcky, except the motion shrines, they can strawberry float off.

It helps that they are often very generous with the hit boxes which makes it feel like you nail a shot even if you're actually a bit off. Horizon ZD has some great bow action as well but goes in the complete opposite route in this regard - you miss by a millimetre and the game is like "strawberry float you Aloy!"

Gyro mechanics are sublime for the most part, quickly lining up a shot with it feels incredibly satisfying! Every once in a while thought it would flake out for me - I'd be moving the controller and it would refuse to register on screen :x
