I think there is actually a wrong way to play, certainly on your first run. That is: ignoring the extraneous stuff, making your way straight from Beast to Beast, then heading straight for Ganon. That is, taking no time out to appreciate or explore the world, do the side-quests (especially the memories), or any of that gubbins.

The game won’t tell you off for that, but I feel that such a very impatient approach is actually the wrong way to play, for the simple reason that the people I know who are more likely to take that approach seem to have less fun.

I don't think that's wrong but I do think it's especially foolish.

I love that feeling when you get the parry right. I still can't tell immediately after, when there's that brief pause... and then the guardians eat their own hot laser death.

I still probably nail it less than 50% of the time. It makes battling the free-roaming guardians very difficult.

I know someone who played it exactly like this and found the game very underwhelming.

Hime wrote:But you can't stick with the weapon you have chosen and are literally forced to use to something you might not like. Other games give the player the option to pick the weapons they want to use and play in any style they like. I don't understand how you can't see that having the weapon degradation system fly's in the face of player choice as you are forced to change weapons, saying you can do what you want within the confines of the games mechanics is true of every game.

It's definitely more in the early game where you likely have to switch up the /type/ of weapon you use, but the game does reach a point where you have too many weapons, and at that point you very definitely are able to always use the weapon type of your choice. I've played the game using bows only as a self-imposed challenge, and it's perfectly possible. If you favour spears you can play the game only using spears, likewise for two handed weapons. I think we're conflating two different things if we're discussing both weapon degradation as a mechanic that stops you from just using the most powerful weapon you own, and weapon degradation making you switch up the way in which you approach combat. The first isn't a player choice issue for me, and the second I think you'll only be forced against in the early game and even then you can commit to a single weapon type if you try. But I'll add that I still think if you're sticking to a single play style and not wanting to experiment, then you're missing the point of the game (I only did the bow only challenge as a second playthrough challenge because I'd already played so much of the game).

Hime wrote:As for the combat options being so diverse, in Assassin's Creed Odyssey you can snipe enemies, open animal cages, sneak in and take everyone out, poison people to turn them against your enemies, ride in horse back like a maniac, set fire to people, etc. There's more combat options I can't remember and loads of other games with just as many so I'm not sure what games you're playing that Zelda's options of ranged weapon, melee weapon, item and the occasional environment option make it seem head and shoulders above other third person action games.

The difference is that in most games like Assassin's Creed, they have plenty of options but they are usually all discrete and separate from each other. In BOTW all of the systems can interact with each other and that allows for more freedom as you can chain things and flow from one approach to another, like in this famous gif. It's not the number of individual approaches that sets BOTW apart, but the combinations of them all.

I don't really want to keep being negative about the game as like I say I did very much enjoy it, Ad's videos and the gif you linked to are some of the stuff I loved about the game. The combat can be great but as I said I did have a pretty crappy experience with the weapon degradation for a while.

I just don't think I'll ever see it as the genre defining experience that others do. Things like "It's an open sand box that you can tackle any way you like!" is completely true but that's fine if you're happy for all open world games to be completely devoid of narrative - the reason why most games can't be completed in any order. Then you have the fact that the 'objectives you can tackle in any order' are four iterative, simplistic mini puzzles with pretty uninspired boss battles. That's ignoring the fact that they are mostly devoid of the Zelda hallmarks and are arguably the worst dungeons of the series. Obviously you can say the game is about enjoying the world and systems which is fine but it makes the point of being able to do the four main missions in any order a moot point if they're considered an arbitrary experience. To go full circle on the thing that started this conversation, the relatively shallow world makes it easy to dip in and out and enjoy exploring the world, even if for me that is mostly just about finding korok seeds, taking on the odd enemy cannot and completing shrines that occasionally give a taste of the Zelda experience I enjoy.

I’ll say this, which is I suppose partially in agreement with Hime: I hope that the next Zelda isn’t BotW2. I hope it’s WW2 (not Phantom Hourglass, that doesn’t count), or TP2 (i.e. OoT3). Linear story-driven experience, strong dungeons, lots of enemy types, and a bunch of items to use. BotW is my favourite game ever, but I’m happy for it to stand alone for a while, and I hope it doesn’t mean the end of more traditional 3D Zelda-like experiences.

I don't particularly rate the dungeons, but I definitely enjoyed the build up to the dungeons. The road to Zora's domain was one of my favourite "journeys" in the game and I thought the gathering of the Zora armour and getting in to the divine beast was a narrative strong point in the game, the trek up Death Mountain was similarly good fun, and I loved the Gerudo quests from sneaking in to the town through to fighting the Yiga clan. The Rito was the worst in that respect but I was a fan of the village design itself. So yes the dungeons themselves weren't great but I liked the stuff around them. Hyrule Castle on the other hand was brilliant!

Oh what I'd give for some proper dungeons in this. The Devine beasts are just awful with no real challenge presented, no head scratching puzzles and bosses that only become challenging if your items start breaking.

I love the way the overworld is built on set rules and you can do anything within reason that uses those rules, but the 'story' is guff.

Hyrule castle is the best bit because it's dungeon like layouts mixed with overworld. Shame hardly any of the game uses that.

Weapons breaking I don't mind, it does force you to mix it up. It also take away the thrill of finding something hidden away. Early on I found a chest up behind a waterfall and it had a fire sword in. Brilliant, I didn't know the game had them. Except it's location suggested it was rare, but it's breaks and you can get them all over the place. So why have it hidden?

Related, everyone should play the DLC dungeon because it's the best boss fight in the game

I have the DLC but I've got to do the beasts before I can get to it, and I'm enjoying the games much the second time around that I don't want to rush to the areas they are in.

Is it an actual dungeon this time or another glorified shrine?

It's basically another Divine Beast in format, albeit probably the one with the best puzzles and boss (as OrangeRKN says).

Spent ages paragliding to a little island shrine off the edge of the map and it's a flipping combat shrine :x Chuff that right off.

What's the right way of dealing with the little Guardians when they start spamming their shitty laser? Obliterated my Guardian Shield+ in a single shot so I was pretty shafted. Do you just need to rush and hit them while they're charging up or is there a more sensible way to kill them?
