I believe the intention of his design is to imply it at least, in a very Japanese way. Like if you talk to him not wearing any armour he says:

"Whoa my! ♪ Aren't you perky? ♪ Well then..."

Also this trivia:

Bolson's profession, demeanor and attire are an allusion to the Carpenters in the Japanese version of Ocarina of Time. In it, the Carpenters would aimlessly prance around Kakariko Village and notably employ characteristically feminine speech. Additionally, one of the Carpenters refers to Link as a cute boy. These are stereotypical traits of gay men in Japanese media that weren't properly adapted for the English versions. In the English versions of Breath of the Wild however, Bolson's stereotypical characteristics were retained. Bolson's tiger-striped collar, leg wrappings, and blue jacket are also likely a reference to the Master Craftsman from Ocarina of Time.

I feel bad for liking him now. I guess it didn’t seem as in your face as Jean Armstrong, say; but yes he’s pretty darn camp.

I just like the bit where he’s throwing confetti around. :(

The portrayal of Bolson is definitely problematic but I kind of found him cute & endearing regardless.

When I was down to I think 8 left I looked up a map to get the rough locations. No point scouring the entire map with the shrine detector turned on - especially when it doesn't alert you to some shrines that have to be revealed with a puzzle.

Thanks for this, OR! I've beaten Ganon, but there's clearly a *lot* that I missed. I always wondered where Tarrey Town was :slol: I've totally missed that quest

I will continue to complain about how missable they made the best sidequest in the game, especially by gating it behind fully upgrading your house (itself easily missable).

You should definitely go back and play through it! You're definitely not alone in not doing it first time round

I will continue to complain about how terrible they made the best sidequest in the game. :P

It seems almost churlish to complain about it given the riches and quality that the game bestows on the player in so many other ways, but questing (main or side) in BotW remained an utter disappointment throughout for me.

Bring me some wood! Show me a picture! Bake me an apple! :fp:

There's rarely any narrative weight or interesting gameplay challenge to anything the game asks you to do in the sidequests, which is a real shame given the fantastic natural world they had created to play in, and the interesting set of gameplay mechanics which they could have easily messed around with more.

EDIT: To make it clear, just in case of misinterpretation, I still think that the game is incredibly good, but that this was one glaring gap in its offering that really stood out to me personally.

Tarrey Town

Off the top of my head I could perhaps have named about 3 NPCs in BOTW but I do remember all of the ones OR has listed. Hudson clearly #1.

I see TT as a reward to those that bothered upgrading the house.

I think the idea isn't to play with mechanics, its to introduce you to them in case you haven't found them already. A lot of the side quests are like tutorials in that sense.

Tarrey Town though has you build up an entire town by finding new residents across the world, which unlocks other sidequests and stores - including the rare armour store which is the only way of reacquiring some pieces of equipment, most notably the Hylian shield. It also ends with attending a wedding which I think is a pretty fun little narrative woven in!

Tarrey Town is by far the most involved quest in the game no doubt, but it still isn't especially interesting from a mechanical or narrative perspective in my view. Again I appreciate that this is not the point of the game in many ways, but I still think it would be a greatly enhanced experience if more attention was given to these aspects.

Majora's Mask is a great example of where Nintendo managed to weave some really interesting story and gameplay vignettes into the proven mechanics of a Zelda game, and they did it extremely well. If BotW had just a few more things on that level then it would have been awesome.

For me this is still the high-water mark in Zelda Quest/Side-Quest design. An involved, massive quest with a satisfying story and really emotional pay off towards the end. Nothing they've done subsequently has come close, and in fact I'd say you could argue that they've not really attempted anything quite like it since.

I'm really hopeful that's exactly what we'll get with the next Zelda, as plenty of others have said before. Another Majora-like reimagining, a much smaller world with the focus on characters and little self-contained stories.

BOTW can't be followed up with the same again

As long as there’s no chuffing time limit then it’s all good.

Majora's Mask doesn't have a time limit

You know what I mean. The whole three day thing. Even though I could rewind time, it put me under unnecessary stress and didn’t allow me to engage in my favourite Zelda hobbies of hoarding and getting lost.

The "time limit" and the way it interacts with the narrative and other game mechanics in Majora's Mask is one of the greatest bits of game design of all time.

I do understand, it can take some getting use to not exploring at your own pace and knowing you're "missing" other things that are happening, but that's a fundamental part of the design and is why you're free to continually go back. It's like in Hitman, where you learn the levels through repeated playthroughs. You're not intended, or even able, to discover everything in one run.

There shouldn't be any stress because there is no penalty or limit in rewinding back to the start of the first day.

(Unfortunately the water temple is super long so I did feel the stress of a time limit there in finishing it in one go!)

That rewinding thing also caused another clever story thing that I didn’t like: you necessarily can’t save everybody. Means that any ending is going to be rather grim. Also there is a slight penalty in that you can't hoard, apart from Rupees via the bank. And yep, the water dungeon was exactly the one I was thinking about!

I never got used to it. I understand that the problems are things it intended, but they’re not for me and I hope Zelda doesn’t go down a similar route again. Also I’m not saying they’ll do it, but I think a similar thing would work even worse with a BotW template, where leisurely exploration and foraging are even bigger parts of the experience.

I wouldn’t mind its increased story and side-quest emphasis, though!
