Did you watch the video? The geography is extremely similar.

Yeah, in addition to the geography, the lookout tower in the same place is the big clue.

In a game full of references to past games-Ranch Ruins has Lon Lon Ranch’s layout, Spring of Power is Skyward Sword’s Spring of Earth, there’s no way it’s just a coincidence.

Yea I did and its not really, it's just a beach with cliffs.

The placement of the look out point is a little bit reminiscent but aside from that I think Gamexplain are looking for something that's not there.

This, there are some similarities sure, but not the same at all. It’s like Sydney and London look the same as they both have a bridge.

I thought it was semi-convincing. The look out tower seems to serve no other purpose in the village bar ornamental, and there are few other WW references in the game - they can't have not attempted to slip in something?

It's not supposed to be the "actual place" like Lon Lon Ranch is I don't think, but I think it's probably deliberately similar in parts of its design.

Yeah with the Zelda series, there's the grand convoluted attempts at a canon, a coherent timeline and overlying geography.

I like to think the series simply ties into the "Legend" in the title, and that the legend gets passed down through the ages and even reoccurs every few hundred years or so, but like the legends in our own history, they get changed by the storyteller, or parts get forgotten, embellished or omitted. So we get the same sorts of things, but depending on who is telling the legend, we get things a little different each time. That's sort of how our own oral history worked, plus the whole unreliable narrator thing.

Though the Zelda timeline really is a load of old bollocks.

There are look out towers all over the map and they're in several other Zelda games too.

Ya for sure, but are there other lookout towers in BotW that are modestly big wooden with a couple of torches on top? I.e. As opposed to the stone columns etc. Might be I can't remember!

I remember NGC magazine tried to put it all together in 2003 or 4. I’ve still got the issue buried somewhere.

Nintendo published an official timeline with Hyrule Historia, which put a stop to all that fan speculation. Whether that's good or bad I don't know

My fan theory is that Nintendo released a false timeline to throw us Zelda Timeline Truthers off the scent

I wonder if this musicality also previously gave environments a sense of inhabitation, or at least personality, that has been removed in BotW in a way that sometimes makes it feel cold to me. A little lonely. (I think it's why the Deku-tree area is a favorite of mine, as it feels most like a classic Zelda environment permeated by an 'ever-mood' of music and walled off by the Lost Woods). And maybe it's because the game is more 'realisitc', in the sense of having an indifferent land-mass that isn't built in obviously game-ic shapes and form. Maybe its the more subtle relationship between player/gameplay and environment (compared with the almost Mario-like clockwork of Skyward Sword) that makes me feel a little decentered, and the world feel a little more barren.

8) Maybe the loneliness is also just from the lack of a companion.

The loneliness is honestly one of my favourite parts of the game; when you put it in tandem with the level of immersion the game provides (at least for me), just quietly exploring the overworld becomes a deeply melancholic experience. The feeling I get from BotW is something I've never had from any other game or work of media in general.

I know what you mean, and perhaps it's just that the loneliness feels a little like a coldness/sparseness compared to what I'm used to in Zelda.

I was wondering yesterday whether the loneliness wasn't just from the size of the world (and in general the way you engage with it, like the Magnesis/Stasis powers being things you do to objects from a distance instead of the drone-float closeness of say the beetle in Skyward Sword etc.) and the way it feels like suddenly being in a dual-carriage-way Zelda (making Link feel smaller).

But I was wondering whether the more ambient, intermittent music and environmental sounds gave Link less significance. Made it feel (perhaps more realistically) like a character exploring a natural landmass that was indifferent to his adventure - compared with the near-constant music of say Termina Field or OoT's Hyrule field giving a sense of significance and import and centrality to everything you are doing: This Is Where The Adventure Is, This Is Where Things Are Happening! Your Quest is the bubble of interest that roams this world and makes it happen! And so on.

As opposed to BotW sandbox approach of: Hey go explore! Knock yourself out!

Yeah I think you hit it there
Media that enforces a feeling of significance and heroism on a single entity doesn't always sit right with me, which is another reason botw's feeling of exploring a world that lives independent of link clicked with me. That also enforces the storyline; link failed and the world is slowly trying to move on and recover regardless of whether he is there or not.
