"Channel". That's the word I could not find earlier in the old vocabulary, which meant I had to substitute "YouTuber" in for it

I hope nobody minds, but I cleaned up the thread title a bit. I kept confusing the "2" in the old title for meaning this was the thread about the sequel to Breath of the Wild. :fp:

We should migrate GRcade to Flarum. :toot:

Turn game on for the first time since 2017.
Find a shrine.
Shrine needs gyro controls.
I'm using a Hori Split Pad Pro.
Turn game off.

I played through BotW on Wii U. Having just started TotK on switch, the graphics are so much better, but I don't know if that's down to the increased resolution/stable framerate due to playing on the switch, or a lot of improvements in art style since BotW.

Did BotW look this good on switch? And was it noticable better than the Wii U version? I'm tempted to upgrade my BotW if that's the case, as I can't get enough of these 2 games.

I have both and spent about 30 or more hours on Switch as I work through it to get to the DLC. BotW on Switch targets 1080p docked (900p internal resolution upscaled to 1080p) and 720p handheld, whereas on Wii U it's 720p unlocked framerate caped at 30fps with some areas going down to 20fps (Karariko village for example). So it varies. The Switch game has better texture resolution, filtering (so textures look sharper further away and blend better as you move around) and some other things, maybe higher level of detail at a distance or draw distance. So yes it's is better, but Nintendo have paid a lot more attention to texture variety and detail, colour bouncing, volumetric lighting, particle effects and other things in the sequel. I've noticed that a lot; it's just artistically more varied and the flora is way more interesting as well (shrubs, moss, overgrowth etc). BOTW engine is the same and also has some of those effects but with the entire game being "outside" or brightly lit for the most part it's just less impactful. It pretty much has the same themes throughout the whole map. BOTW is a bit bland in comparison, yes. It appears a bit watercolour-y.

TOTK and BTOW are about the same in terms of resolution and framerate on Switch. So if you've played TOTK on switch and then gone back to Wii U then yes you will probably notice less clarity and choppier framerate at times. There's more going on in TOTK and they've obviously squeezed things like CPU and just incorporated greater diversity in the environments that are seamless.

I think they've gone for some sharper and slightly higher poly designs in many places in TOTK but it's very subtle and I think also comes down to texture work. Just about everything has had those extra years attention paid to it building on an existing template (the engine is still Wind Waker -> Twilight Princess -> Skyward Sword -> BOTW but there's probably not much left from earlier games. It would have been a massive rewrite for all the scale and environmental peaks and troughs in the open world format).

Thanks for this, it sounds like it might well be worth the upgrade at some point. I could get it with my other 2 for £84 voucher. Excellent value for money.

I completed BOTW on Wii U. Never played it on Switch. Obviously the sequel looks better on Switch from a couple of hours play so far but I never thought the Wii U version was a serious downgrade looking at comparisons at the time. What they achieved on the slow architecture was a miracle

I'm gonna start a fresh run of this and, looking on Twitter, it seems that fellow GRcadian kerr is, too.

I played Breath of the Wild on the Wii U and Switch and had a great time with both versions of the game, never bought the DLC for the Wii U mainly as I wanted some new content for the Switch play through but for the most part it looked very good on the Wii U, not quite as nice as the Switch but unless you played them back to back it was hard to tell the differences in my opinion. I'd have actually had no problem playing Tears of the Kingdom on the Wii U if they released it on that as well (not that they ever will of course).

Decided to give BotW another shot after some friends were talking about TotK. Haven't touched it for over 6 years, so I guess I'll see how my complaints hold up after being removed from the source for a console generation.

I did the beginners trial of the sword and strawberry float the rest of it, attempted medium and died on like level 4.

Worth remembering BOTW is basically a Wii U game having spent so long in development, and it definitely is a technically really impressive title, I had nothing but enjoyment from it. They also released a patch soon after release that significantly improved things like framerate when a lot was going on (infamously for example when Moblins were flying all over the place the original release would drop to single digits for a few moments or even freeze, which was an obvious bottleneck), foresty areas with a lot of shadow, and busy areas like Korok forest and Karakiko village were much smoother (more like a consistent 20 to 25fps rather than stuttering around or below 20 fps).

The Wii U version is a complete and amazing game for what is essentially a mash up of a 3 core IBM power PC like the Wii and GameCube before and Xbox 360-like graphical hardware in a tiny, quiet, low energy consumption console. Everyone whinges about Nintendo hardware now but artistically they are untouchable and what they get out of very efficient hardware is just incredible. You have to admire the artistry of it.

The beginners trial is actually the hardest (if I’m remembering correctly) as there’s one Lizalfos room, the one that’s basically just a long bridge, which is an absolute mother strawberry floater. I think it’s the only thing I’ve not done on Master Mode.

Oh lizalfos bridge room was an absolute bastard yes. They move so quickly and if you fall in the water you're basically strawberry floated.
