The Legend of Zelda - Randomizer Thread!

So myself, Cora and aayl had been talking on Twitch about doing some randomizers together and chatting about them on the forum.
We also thought it would be a great idea to open it up to other members of the forum and hopefully get some more people interested in trying out randomizers!

What Are Randomizers?
This article gives a decent explanation of what they are.
https://arstechnica.com/gaming/2019/12/ ... old-games/

We'll be using the ALTTP and OOT randomizers (At least to start).

https://alttpr.com/en
https://ootrandomizer.com/

How can I take part?
It's simple really. All you need is a method for playing ROMS. This can be on an emulator, a hacked SNES mini or even original hardware if you have the appropriate flash carts! I'll post details of the "seed" for the current game and how to generate the ROM! All you have to do is try to complete the game and then post your endgame time. That's it! If you need help with a certain part, or you're not sure what you can do, just ask in the thread!

You will be asked for a specific Zelda ROM for the randomizer to patch. One for ALTTP and one for OOT.

I'm not a speedrunner!
You don't need to be! Most of the popular randomizers are configurable to be approachable for regular players. Knowledge of the specific game will help but we won't require you to know any speedrunning glitches or cheats. The best way to learn is to play, so don't worry as this is just for fun.

What are trackers?
Trackers are external bits of software that keep "track" of what items you may have found, and some even allow you to mark off checked locations on a map. They are extremely handy for seeing what you have access to, and what you still need to get!
I use EmoTracker, which you can find here: https://emotracker.net/

The next post will go into how to set up and use emotracker.

So what's going to happen and how will it work?
We're going to kick things off with ALTTP. While we really want to do some OOT randomizers, we want to ease new randomizer players into things and ALTTP is a lot easier to get your head around. Especially when it comes to getting used to the tracker for the first time. So we'll do two or three ALTTP randomizers first and then try a bigger OOT one.

ALTTP also has the benefit of being far quicker to play through. Myself and Cora can get through most ALTTP seeds in around 2.5 hours or less. This obviously comes with time and practice, but 4-5 hours isn't uncommon for first time players. There's no need to do the SEED in one go either, you can save and carry on later. But it's less about how long it takes you and more about giving them a go!

With that in mind, the current seeds can be found below!

Ocarina of Time - SEED 3

You can generate the ROM and set your cosmetic and SFX settings at the link below.
I would recommend going to the Cosmetic page and setting "Default Targeting Option" to "Switch" instead of "Hold". This means you don't need to hold Z everytime you lock-on, but it's personal preference.
You can also turn off or change Navi noises in the SFX menu.

https://ootrandomizer.com/seed/get?id=730253

It will ask you for an OOT ROM as well. If you don't already have the required one you can find it here:
https://www.dropbox.com/s/tlkdv1scgsedk ... 9.z64?dl=0

I have not generated an EmoTracker file this time around as I'm going to be trying a web-based tracker to see how that works. (https://track-oot.net/)

With this tracker you can upload the "spoiler log" for the SEED and I believe it will configure itself accordingly.

You can find the spoiler log file here: https://ootrandomizer.com/spoilers/get?id=730253

Save that then on the tracker site, once it's loaded, go to "Extras -> Upload Spoiler". Check the "Load settings from spoiler" box, click the "Load spoiler" button in the bottom left, navigate to the saved spoiler file and click ok. Finally click "Submit" in the bottom right and it will load the settings for the seed into the tracker.

If you wish to use a different tracker package, or set up the tracker yourself, you can find the seed metadata here.

Important SEED Notes

This is a normal SEED. You need to get six medallions and defeat Ganon to beat the game.

Forest is OPEN - This means you DO NOT need to access and beat the Deku Tree dungeon before you can leave Kokiri Forest area. You have access to Deku Tree.
Kakariko Gate is CLOSED - You need to find and provide Zelda's letter to the guard in Kakariko village to open the gate and get access to Happy Mask Shop.
Door of Time is closed until you play the Song of Time (You can use either of the Ocarinas).
Zora's Fountain is closed until you provide Ruto's Letter to King Zora.
Gerudos Fortress will have four carpenters to save with an item at the end. Until you find the Gerudo Membership Card the Guards in the fortress will still chase and catch you. Membership card can be anywhere.
Access to Ganon's Tower requires 6 dungeon medallions and all 6 Trials within are required to get to Ganondorf.
Songs can be found anywhere an item is found
Playing Epona's song for a cow will provide an item
Kokiri Sword has been shuffled.
Ocarina's have been shuffled.
The Egg you get from Malon has been shuffled. You need this to wake Talon and visit Zelda and to get Malon/Talon back to Lon Lon and to get Saria to go to the Forest Temple entrance.
The stealth section to get to Zelda as a child has been skipped and you go straight to her and Impa.
Magic Beans are shuffled as well. Bean seller will have an item for 60 Rupees first time you meet him (then will sell bean top ups I believe).
Bean planting locations are noted on the tracker so you can keep track of ones that you have planted. Some will lead to items later on.
MediGoron and Desert Wasteland Carpet Salesmans items (Biggoron Sword and Bombchus) are in the item mix. They will now sell a random item.
All keys, maps and compasses are to be found in their appropriate dungeons, though they will be mixed about inside them.
There potentially are good items for getting 10 & 20 Skulltulas. No required or good items will be given for 30, 40 or 50.
Players will start with the largest Wallet in the game and the Stone of Agony. Rupee hunting is gooseberry fool and I kept finding 200 Rupees when I only had the small wallet. Stone of Agony enables rumble and will allow you to find hidden grottos that can be accessed by bombing, or playing the Song of Storms. If your controller has no rumble, then it will show an icon in the bottom left of the screen.
The D-Pad can be used to quickly access Ocarina's and Boots. Especially useful for quickly toggling boots on and off.
You always start with one free Medallion/Spiritual Stone. This is marked in the "FREE" slot within the tracker.
Some minigame phases have been skipped. So if a game has two prizes (Dampe race and Gerudo Horseback Archery) it is possible to get both prizes first time instead of having to do them twice.
Big Poe Target has been set at 5. There's no option to set that on the tracker, which always wants 10 Big Poes. Just be aware that once you have 5 Big Poes you can claim the item from the Hyrule Market Guard House.
FINALLY - Make sure and speak to the gossip stones, who will provide hints about item locations. It may give you a specific location for something, or it might tell you an area is on "the way of the hero" (Means there's an essential item there) or it might tell you a certain area is foolish (I.e there's strawberry float all you need there).

ALTTP - SEED 2

There is no time limit to completing this seed! Take as long as you need!

Glitches Required: NoGlitches
ROM build: 2020-09-25
Accessibility: 100% Inventory
World State: Open
Swords: Randomized
Goal: Defeat Ganon
Permalink: https://alttpr.com/en/h/ZeM4VNLYyj

No glitches are required to beat this seed.
Every chest and item in the game is potentially accessible (Though not necessarily needed)
"Open" opening. Meaning you DO NOT have to rescue Zelda from the castle dungeon and go through the sewers to Sanctuary. You can choose to start either at Links House or Sanctuary. The Castle will still contain chests to check, but you will not be provided a light source for the sewer section.
Swords are randomized into the item pool and you may not find one for a while.
The goal is to get all 7 Crystals, beat the boss in Ganon's Tower, then kill Ganon

To get started click the "Permalink" above. You will be asked to provide the appropriate version of the ALTTP ROM. Anyone who doesn't have this can contact me and I'll point you in the right direction.
It also allows you to tailor the ROM to your own taste. This is purely cosmetic, but you can change Link's Sprite, the colour hearts appear and how quickly the "low health" warning bleeps.
Click "Save ROM" for it to download your patched ROM and then plug it into the emulator of your choice! I recommend BSNES where possible.
On the file select screen of the game you'll see a "Code" like below. If it matches, you're ready to go!

I THINK that's everything.

Yeah, OOT rando is complex.

Any questions just ask and I'll do what I can to answer, though I am new to this randomizer myself.

Have fun guys!

Emotracker - How to use it with ALTTP Randomizer

Emotracker is a great tool for use with randomizers for numerous games. Their main function is to "track" your progress through the randomizer.
In most cases this tracks keys, items, dungeon rewards and the locations you can access.

I'm going to show you how to get Emotracker set up for ALTTP with a map and item tracker.

First you will need to download and install Emotracker from the link below:

https://emotracker.net/

Once installed run the tracker and look at the three icons in the top right (Cog, Cloud, Refresh).

Clicking the cloud will bring up the package manager.

There are packages for many, many different games. Different packages will track different things, for different games and are designed by different people. You can play about to find which one you prefer further down the line, but for now choose the first option "EmoTracker Official ALTTP Support" and click the "Install" button on the right.

This will download all the assets for the package in a few seconds and you're now ready to use it!

Close the package manager and click the cog icon to bring up a dropdown menu.

"Installed Packages" will show all the games you currently have packages for, so go into the ALTTP menu, then the EmoTracker Official ALTTP Support" menu and select the top option "Standard Map Tracker"

This should give you a screen like this:

Image

The Map - The map shows the two main areas of ALTTP. Light world and Dark world. Each coloured square represents a location where an item can be found. A location can have more than one item listed. The individual colour tells you that location's status. Red locations mean you cannot access and get any of the items. Orange locations mean that you can access "some" of the items but not all of them. Yellow items mean that you can access an item there, but you may need a glitch or advanced technique. Green means you have everything you need to access that location. Blue means that you cannot access it yet, but you can see what the item is (For example you can see the item on the bookshelf long before you can get it). As you get more items, these colours will change, reflecting what you have access to. For example once you have the hookshot and lamp, the right side of death mountain should turn mostly green.

The Items - As you progress through you will find the various items required to complete the game. You can left click on an item to highlight it once you have found it and then right click to deselect it. As you highlight them, locations on the map will change colour. Some items can be left-clicked more than once (Bow becomes bow with silver arrows when clicked twice), or right-clicked to get some additional functions. The medallions for example are required to open Misery Mire and Turtle Rock. These medallions change in each seed, so if you visit the entrance you can see which one is required and right click on that medallion to mark it as MM, TR or Both. Similarly the crystal/pendant locations are shuffled, so you may find the 3 pendants in the dark world and 3 of the crystals in the light world. Again, right clicking on a dungeon crystal lets you change it from Crystal to Pendant (The + icon indicates either the Green Pendant, or the two Red Crystals).

Pinned Locations
Certain locations can be checked without being able to collect the item. If you click on the location on the map and see a dotted outline on it, then you can mark what item you saw there. This is very useful if you find something important (Such as the fire rod) but you can't get to it yet. When you do this, it will appear on the "Pinned Locations" section.

That's the basics of the tracker. There are more options and it will take you a little bit of time to get used to how it all works, but it's a really useful tool for running randomizers.
Tracker discipline is a good thing to work on, so marking off things as you find them and making sure you now how many items are found in each dungeon is very useful. If you click on a dungeon or other area (Such as the castle) you will see several chests shown. It shows you as many chests as there are items. Bear in mind that it does not consider maps, compasses or any keys as dungeon items. So there will be more chests than items in most dungeons.

On the Cog menu, under "Application" there is an option to save the tracker status, which is very useful as long as you remember it's there! If you close without saving you will lose everything!

Any questions then give myself or Cora a shout!

Placeholder for my time here.

Guys, you should definitely get involved in this if you've got a spare few hours, the randomisers are a lot of fun and it will be really cool to get a wee group of us in and doing them fairly regularly!

Definitely.

The initial hurdle is the hardest and once you get up and running they're amazing fun!

It doesn't even matter if you don't really know the game that well. I haven't played vanilla ALTTP in over 20 years and I managed to pick up the randomizer really quickly.

Any questions then just give us a shout!

Giving this a slight bump to make sure people see it this afternoon.

After trying out an ALTTP randomizer last time out I just think I'm not into the games enough to get something out of them unfortunately. Hopefully I'll get a chance to watch some of you guys having a play with them though!

So I am VERY interested in doing a OOT randomiser seed - I'm pretty familiar with OOT and have watched a few streams of them.

I am far far less familiar with aLttP (only completed it once like 10 years ago) so think I'd get less out of it than a OOT one.

That said I'd still give the LttP one a go for the lolz if there's an interested crowd!

Might also see if i can get my twitch channel up and running in some capacity for it. Like if i could just stream my emulation via my laptop or whatever.

I’m going to quote tag a few people in here when I get back on the laptop, to see if they’d be interested. If not I’d be quite happy to jump straight into Ocarina.

Also Jen, you’re better than this. Give it a shot, g’wan.

I'm more familiar with OoT but would give this a go if someone can tell me how to do it on my SNES mini

I have given it a shot! Devlin had a good stab at getting some randomizer stuff going a while back and I gave it a go back then on an ALTTP seed.

Like I say I think my problem was just that it isn't really a game that I'm that familiar with so rather than the experience being "an interesting new way to experience a game you know and love" it was more "bang your head against a wall as you try to stumble through an even more confusing version of a game you can't really remember in the first place!"

Never say never and all that, I might give an OoT one a go as I'm slightly more au fait with that but even then I think the last time I played it was 15+ years ago!

Try it again man!

Though, having played that seed, maybe not. It was brutal. Stats were:

2:49:48
176/216 items collected

An Aga seed where I ended up having to dip three different dungeons to find what I needed to progress. Was mental.

I love the idea of these (I know I've asked Devlin about how to get them on a snes classic before) But for the reasons above I don't think I'd get the best out of it or stick the whole game. Maybe something like this on a game I know back to front (like sonic 2 or something) would be more my thing.

Yeah sadly whenever I've looked into it more the games that I know intimately never have a randomizer community so there's nothing to play. :(

It's obviously a concept that lends itself better to certain types of games, those that rely on gear and upgrades as a progression mechanism where altering the timing of the user acquiring things can put a new spin on the experience.

So I searched up a Link's Awakening randomiser and noticed one of the options is to disable the text when picking up an acorn/piece of power.

Might just set it up so I can play the vanilla game but with that

Oh now there's a game I know inside out, perfect to try out a randomiser one day!

I do really like A Link to the Past. I'm not sure I have the knowledge to get a good time on a randomiser playthrough, but I definitely want to check it out!

+1 for an OoT randomiser being something I could actually get into. I'm pretty sure I've never even completed vanilla LttP, so the randomisers are lost on me.

I tried some SMB3 ones though and they were great.

We're only starting out with the LTTP one to get people into the swing of Zelda randomizers and how to use the tracker. I'll be posting an OOT one next week most likely (I'm doing a SEED myself just now to get my head around the tracker as it's a bit more complex than ALTTP) so stay tuned.

You should just give it a go. No one expects you to come out with an excellent time your first try. ALTTP is also one of the easier randomisers to learn.

:D

I've been looking at the other Zelda randomizers as well and LADX Randomizer could be interesting. Maybe after we do OOT we'll give that one a shot.

There's randomizers for just about all the main zelda games. Even Wind Waker and Twilight Princess, but I've never seen anyone playing them so not sure how well developed they are.

So is the plan for a new seed each week? I'll definitely keep an eye on things and try to jump in on any rounds that I think I'll actually be able to keep up with! :D

Think I'll give the ALttP seed a go this weekend alongside setting up a barebones twitch stream, as a way to learn both the tracker and how to stream to twitch.

My heart is very much for a ZOOTR though (I've been really enjoying Dev's stream of his practice seed)
