I put just over 100 hours (105 I seem to recall ending on) and there really is so few differences, the Switch version looks ever so slightly nicer and has fewer slowdowns (but even the Wii U is fine in this regard, mainly just Kakariko and Hateno where it drops a bit). Put about 55/60 hours into the Switch version and really not noticed anything visually, the slow down in towns is definitely better though. Either version will see you fine!

Kept my Wii U version as well :)

There are even areas that perform better on wii u, so the optimisations in the game seem to just vary based on hardware characteristics. The picture is 1080p in docked mode and you get a more solid 30fps in handheld mode on switch, but after patches etc it's pretty much the same game. Sometimes framerate drops to 20-24fps in some very busy areas like villages and that's about it, yet somehow this doesn't impact the enjoyment, maybe because it's like a cartoon and how smooth the camera and general mechanics are. It's not 60fps wind waker in terms of performance, but it's so well made in every other conceivable aspect I just don't lament the way it plays at all. It's quite an easy going game, obviously if it was an fps or action game this would cause serious issues but.. It just doesn't.

Decided to venture in to the tough areas first and try to sneak past the guardians. I got spotted :dread:

Deflecting Guardians laser beams is one thing I never got the hang of, suppose I should try again at some point!

It's much easier with a guardian shield.

I didn't even know you could deflect the beams! I tended to just dodge them or shoot them in the eye before they got a chance to shoot me. :D

The tilt controls for aiming are brilliant in this, except for the approximately 10% of the time when it decides to just not work! :x

It's possible with any shield, a lot lid will do for example. The only problem is if you miss time, the shield gets destroyed. I'm sure the guardian ones give you a bigger parry window though. Either way, it's easier at a medium range I find as you have more time to react to the beam coming your way.

I played the whole thing on Wii U, no problems apart from framerate drops in Kakariko and occasionally if there are a lot of explosions all happening at once.

Been thinking about getting back on this and buying the DLC, got loads of other stuff still to play first though. Might see if I can get to it by the end of the summer.

Don't the guardian shields automatically reflect beams? They just take damage when doing so.

Yes, but not directly back at the guardian, you still have to parry.

Cool. I need to try out parrying I think - that and the dodge move where you the get a bunch of free hits on the enemy were some of the things I've never really had to bother with.

I've started this back up again now after finishing Xenoblade Chronicles 2 and I'm trying to mop up some of the remaining shrines and quests which I never got round to last year. Not sure I'm that bothered about finding all the korok seeds - those are getting to be a bit of a chore by this point and I've got enough slots for everything now!

How did you fight Lynels without parrying or flurrying?

Same way I fight most things - shoot them in the head and then lay into them whilst they're stunned. The Lynels also have opening where you can dodge their charges and then mount them to get a bunch of hits in.

Sure shoot them in the head to stun when they charge, but then if they attack with their three slash combo I think I'd find it difficult /not/ to trigger the flurry rush.

Shows how great the game is though when fights can be approached in such different ways

(I'd have also accepted stasis+ as an answer)

I seemed to use a combo of stasis + and shooting Lynels in the head to take them down, shield blocking was not my forte. Was ok at dodging/flurry attacks which certainly helped!

Wait...so are you saying there is a way to fight lynels that doesn't involve me eating 8 meat skewers?

My current tactic is to fly over them, hit them with savage lynel bow shots and shock arrows in slow mo, when dropped they'll be stunned, charge up my most powerful double handed weapon, and spin attack to strawberry float. That'll normally deal with the lower ones, and if you can stun the white ones again with a arrow to face, one more double handed spin attack usually does it....all in barbarian clothes of course.

I know how to parry sentinels, but never use dodge attacks on lynels, tell me more?

Also, why do shields have 'damage' or numbers....surely they are all the same? Is it perhaps hits they can take?

The higher the number the stronger the hits the shield can take I believe, which affects how enemies react when you block their attacks if I remember right? Durability is a separate (hidden) stat, but in general stronger shields are also more durable I think.

Also while they aren't damage numbers, lynel shields do actually do damage when you parry with them

Curls wrote:I know how to parry sentinels, but never use dodge attacks on lynels, tell me more?

If you dodge an attack with the right timing you enter the slow-mo flurry rush mode, which lets you pummel Lynels a bit.

This is great fun! I've completed the first shrine (gaining Magnesis) and am just in the second shrine (bombs). I've picked up the Switch shirt, too :toot: .
