PostThe Limescale Thread
by Yubel » Mon Dec 13, 2021 1:40 pm

I've recently come to the point of being unable to ignore a certain substance dwelling at the bottom of my kettle; beyond the kitchen worktop and through a dense veil of condensation, my fogged up camera braved the descent into my faithful appliance to discover...

Limescale is a substance mainly made up of calcium and magnesium which is left behind when hard water evaporates. It often builds up inside kettles, boilers, pipework, kettles and on taps and shower heads. especially that for hot water.

After a bit of research, I have since learned that there are certain areas that have access to soft water as opposed to hard water. Residing in the South East of England, it seems that I'm resigned to hard water, but what about you?

Also, if you have any limescale in your household, don't be afraid to share with the class.

I saw the thread title and wondered if this might have been a long awaited follow up thread.

Get a kettle protector from Wilko, they cost just £1-£1.25 and work wonders!

Oh, man, yeah - living in a prime "hard water" area (saaf Lundn) limescale is a complete pain. It wrecked my shower unit (I had to replace it), my washing machine (I now use limescale tablets) and my kettle (I now use Kilrok every two months or so to clear out the huge amount of limescale that builds up).

Limescale... grr!

I live like 100m from the thames so all hard water here, the limescale can be a problem but vinegar tends to solve the kettle issue.

Grew up down south so was used to it but never bothered me until I got to Scotland and came back to it after. Biggest thing was my hair never felt as good when I washed it down south. Scottish tap water supremacy.

Growing up in North London (and living in Wimbledon for a year) we did get limescale but it was never really an issue - I quite like the taste of London water. Now I live in Liverpool I've never had to descale any appliance ever.

My in laws live near Reading though and it's like Ben Grimm has spunked in their kettle :dread:

I'm in SE London so my kettle routinely looks horrendous.

It is satisfying when you descale it, but good grief it returns fast.

Hard water tastes better and might reduce the risk of heart disease so I'm ok with it
