PostRe: Star Wars: The Mandalorian - 6th episode out now on Disney+. 7th ep on Wednesday.

Episode thoughts:

Predictable plot, but was no less compelling and intense. I enjoyed the greater interaction with the New Republic, even if it was still very standoffish in approach.

R1 droids in action at long strawberry floating last. We catch glimpses of them on Tatooine and in certain other locations over the years, but always they appear derelict, defunct, inanimate things. This is the first time we even see them moving. I always thought them completely immobile. :slol:

Nice to see a bit of a mix of species in the lineup this week, and the first male Twi'lek since RotJ.

I expect more Baby Yoda memes out of this.

Also, those crazy, wonderful cameos:

This episode of The Mandalorian had an amazing guest cast, including blink-and-you’ll miss it cameos from three Star Wars directors and the one actor who has played Anakin Skywalker more than anyone..

... everyone who plays a mercenary in this episode is a pretty cool actor. Run is played by Mark Boone Jr., Mayfeld is played by Bill Burr, Xi’an is played by Natalia Tena, the Devonian Burg is played by Clancy Brown (yep that Clancy Brown), Qin is played by Ismael Cruz Cordova, and the droid Zero is played by Richard Ayoade.

... You’ll be forgiven if you didn’t recognize the guy who played the poor New Republic guard on the prison ship, but if you like The Clone Wars, there’s a chance you should have recognized his voice. That’s Matt Lanter, better know as Anakin Skywalker on The Clone Wars.

And, then, there are those three X-Wing pilots at the end of the episode. In a fictional move, all three of these pilots are played by people who have directed episodes of The Mandalorian. So, yes, that’s Dave Filoni, Rick Famuyiwa (who directed and co-wrote this episode) and Deborah Chow (who is in charge of the Obi-Wan Kenobi show.)

Rudolphin wrote:Another ok episode. The half-hour monster of the week format means that nothing sticks though. Characters come and go and the Mando himself isn't enough of one to carry a series. It's just a bunch of things happening in Star Wars style.

I get the feeling that Mandalorian is going to tie into the sequel trilogy, via the child and the cloning tech we saw earlier, among other things. So while it starts with monsters of the week, and our hero skirting the galactic fringe in search of safe harbor, I feel like it'll develop over time. This one's a slow burner.

I trust in the Filoni/Favreau partnership.

By the time I watched this yesternight I was falling asleep halfway through. Mostly indoor scenes on basic sets, and this whole western theme felt artificially laboured. It seemed more like Star Trek TNG or Stargate, cheap tv. For me this was the weakest episode - but I might rewatch some of it in case I like it better when I'm awake. I did like that seeing Kurgan.

With only two episodes left of this season to air, the next on Wednesday (because TRoS begins its theatrical run on Thursday and Mando has a little promo at the end of it), I am hopeful that the show will shift gears and take us back to main arc town in this next episode.

I've downloaded by not yet watched episodes 5 and 6, really need to get back on this.

Read someone on Twitter the other day saying they thought this was the best thing in the SW franchise since the original trilogy!

Calling it now:

Next season and beyond might very well be Mando tracking down Moff Gideon, the Child and, in the process, uncovering the nature and extent of the Empire's operations. Maybe it'll be with the help of his brethren, at least to start with. The adventure might take us to Mandalore (wishful thinking, I'm sure), Kamino, Jakku, even Starkiller Base, and could eventually involve characters like Leia and Holdo.

On another subject, I swear I recall there being another Moff Gideon in the upper echelons of the Empire, in the books, possibly the first Thrawn book. Could be the same man, maybe?

By far the best episode of the series so far.

Episode 7 of The Mandalorian was fantastic. It was just what I needed after I saw The Rise of Skywalker! A lot happened in the short 45 min run time.

There was the plan to stop the bounty hunters, the meeting up for the mission, there was baby Yoda healing and the whole ambush. But what was interesting was the short flashback of how Nick Nolte trained the droid after wiping him. A concise little story and it was funny! eg the dropping the box on that creature and my favourite bit of the whole episode was when the droid mis-aimed the food and the blurrg creature looked at him annoyed! But giving him that back story makes me think he will ultimately become a character, possibly an ally of the Mandolorian.

Yeah I dunno what's going on with that, had to look harder than usual. Googled The Mandalorian s01e08 and I found a mega link.

That was excellent. Can't help feeling though that if someone watched just episodes 1-3, 7 and 8 their impression of the series would be the same as someone who watched all of them. Literally nothing happened in the middle episodes.
