Star Wars: The Mandalorian - Disney+.

After the stories of Jango and Boba Fett, another warrior emerges in the Star Wars universe. “The Mandalorian” is set after the fall of the Empire and before the emergence of the First Order. We follow the travails of a lone gunfighter in the outer reaches of the galaxy far from the authority of the New Republic.

The debut season costs a reported $100 million to make and consists of eight episodes.

Disney+ will not be available in the UK until 31st March 2020 but some members of this wretched hive of scum and villainy will find a way to watch this. Sounds like episodes will be released at 11am GMT. Season 2 debuted on 30th October 2020.

Cast

Pedro Pascal is the man under the titular Mandalorian mask for The Mandalorian, who is only known as the Mandalorian. Viewers will recognize Pascal from a variety of projects, but specifically for his work on Game of Thrones, Narcos, and Kingsman: The Golden Circle.

Gina Carano is joined the galaxy far, far away as Cara Dune, an ex-imperial shock trooper. Dune is a wanderer who goes from planet to planet after having left the Empire behind. She also has a small tattoo of the Rebel symbol on her left cheek. Cara works with the Mandalorian in season 1 after originally believing he is hunting her down.

Carl Weathers plays Greef Carga in The Mandalorian; he's the head of a bounty hunting guild and is responsible for hiring bounty hunters for specific missions. In season 1, he employs The Mandalorian for his mysterious adventure. Weathers is one of The Mandalorian's most recognizable and experienced cast members, starring in major franchises like Predator and Rocky several decades ago. He's also appeared in Happy Gilmore and TV shows like Colony and multiple entries in the Chicago Fire franchise.

Another bounty hunter in The Mandalorian is IG-11, who's voiced by Taika Waititi. IG-11 was previously believed to be IG-88 from the original trilogy but is instead an entirely new character from the IG-series of robots. Waititi is now best known as the director of Thor: Ragnarok, where he also lent his voice to the role of Korg; he reprised that role in Avengers: Endgame.

Giancarlo Esposito stars in The Mandalorian as Moff Gideon. With the collapse of the Empire, Gideon is one of the remaining ex-Imperial governors using his power as he sees fit. Moff Gideon is one of the antagonists in The Mandalorian. Prior to joining the galaxy far, far away, Esposito appeared as Gus in Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul. He's also previously worked with Favreau as a voice actor on The Jungle Book.

The Mandalorian will not be pre-screened before its Nov. 12 premiere in order to protect “any surprises and plot twists.”

MM You're absolutely right to give this its own thread. The Mandalorian looks amazing, and will likely become the biggest TV programme of the next 2-3 years. If it is a creative and fan success then it could lead the way for the future of Star Wars.

I've certainly been interested in this, but knowing that the UK won't be getting Disney+ for another five months or so after the US has put a dent in my hype. I'd join that wretched hive of scum and villainy who'd find a way to watch it, but this ain't a cartoon so my usual two haunts won't be any good, and I'm not so trusting of other such sites even with an adblocker in place.

But when Disney+ does come to the UK (goodbye Disney Life), I'll be sure to join up straight away. No only will this be around, but Clone Wars S7 as well. And all the other non-Star Wars stuff I have an interest in checking out.

Why the strawberry float are they not either launching Disney+ here in time or at least putting The Mandalorian onto a service that we already have access to? Ridiculous situation. This is going to get pirated to strawberry float by huge numbers of people who would have been prepared to actually pay for it.

Does look very nice though, I certainly have more hype for this than I do Rise of Skywalker. This may hopefully go someway to help paper over the cracks in the new trilogy by exposing us to a bit more explanation as to how we end up in the First Order vs Resistance conflict so quickly after the defeat of the Empire.

First of all love the look of it, I will be paying for Disney plus when it comes to the UK. But I am sure there will be another way to watch this at launch

However does it annoy anyone else that they are treating freezing someone in Carbonite as a standard thing? I mean it was just something Vader did to be a dick, it had nothing to do with bounty hunting, and pretty much everyone that saw it done ended up dead.

It looks great, cant wait for it. I relaly think Disney+ will be worht it when it launches here, with stuff like this and all the movies for the kids its looking more useful for me than Netflix right now.

One thing I didn't like about the new trailer is that in the theme music I heard the original Star Wars theme - I really hope it has it's own signature theme.

Disney+ not launching in the UK is apparently it's to do with Sky still having the rights to some of the Disney and FOX IP they want to launch with - I think unlike Netflix they want to have the same content available in all territories.

Pirating is part and parcel of the media business (in that it's just a fact and can't be stopped) and actually serves to advertise Disney+. The idea is that once Disney+ is available here we all jump into the ecosystem so that we are loyal to their TV programmes and cinema movies and go back and forth requiring feeding from one mythology to the other so that we are eternally loyal, paying customers.

Oh yes it it's part and parcel of things, but I think this is going to force a bunch of people into pirating who wouldn't have otherwise thought of it (perhaps not as many as I fear, but it won't be a small number) and then there is always the risk that when they realise just how easy it can be they don't feel the need to come back "into the fold" when the real service launches.

Just seems like they could have been much more organised about how they debuted both the service itself and this series specifically.

I suspect there are many logistical and cost reasons meaning it has taken them longer to roll out a global streaming service everywhere. It probably wasn't worth their while to rush it out (at extra cost no doubt) just to avoid people downloading this one show early in some countries.

And they don't want you tapping into the service just for one show and then cancelling anyway. They want you to join and keep the subscription going forever. If you download the show and enjoy it and then decide to subscribe when they launch the service they'll be happy and I suspect in many instances this will happen. For the instances where it doesn't, I doubt they'll be leaving that much money on the table.

More excited for this than Rise of Skywalker.

The piracy issue is larger than just this one show and this one streaming service. Piracy became an issue originally because people wanted everything in one place and to be able to watch content on their laptops, phones etc and basically be able to take their media with them. Streaming became viable and piracy seems to have abated on the back of it, it didnt go away, some poeple are just always gonna pirate stuff, but once it became cheap and easy to stream content to any device many people were happy to pay for the privilge. Namely, pay Netflix for the privilege.

Now, however, you have Netflix, Amazon Prime, HBO Go, CBS All Access, Disney Life/Plus, Now TV, Youtube Red and niche products like WWE Network, NJPW world, Hayu, Crunchyroll to name just some of the streaming services out there. Its all becoming too much, content is starting to fracture all over the place. Netflix isnt the place with the movies, its a place with Netflix content and some movies, the same for Amazon and HBO Go and Disney+. People arent going to subscribe to everything, theyll pick one and then pirate what they want from the rest.

As someone with very little knowledge of the Extended Universe / Legends ("boo! You can't have an opinion on Star Wars then! ) can someone explain to me why everyone seems to have the same bloody armour in the Star Wars universe?

Storm Troopers look like they do because they "evolved" from the Clone Troopers right?

Boba and Jango Fett wore Mandalorian armour. We don't know if they were actually Mandalorian themselves. The Mandalorians are/were a race/group of pirates/bounty hunters renowned across the Galaxy. The relationship of the main character of The Mandalorian (who also wears Mandolorian armour) to the new Star Wars continuity's version of what the Mandalorians actually are*, will no doubt be explored in, yes, The Mandalorian.

Clear as mud.

*in the EU the Mandalorians were an entire nation of noble warriors who fought a war against the Jedi thousands of years ago in the era of the Old Republic. After this defeat they fractured and became less a nation than a cult of duty-bound mercenaries. With all the old EU now being non-canon (until it is, see Grand Admiral Thrawn) who knows if this is consistent with the new, post-sequel continuity?

Massively looking forward to this. No idea how I am going to be able to watch it though. It will be a massive shame if this doesn’t appear anywhere here for the foreseeable future.

I didn't realise they were taking a traditional weekly episode schedule release for this rather than the Netflix "here it is, now go binge" dump approach.

I'm not really sure which I prefer. Pros and cons to both methods.
