It turns up in a couple of episodes towards the end of Rebels as well, so I knew what it was, luckily.

I hear the closing episides to this are some of the best, would people say that was true?

I got up to episode 4 as they were coming out but have really struggled with the desire to get back in and finish it.

Well, don't bring your doom and gloom into this thread once you have seen them, and certainly don't give any of your thoughts about them. ;)

It does dip a little in the middle, but the last two are damn good.

Episode 5 down, another big fat slice of meh.

The level of nonsense in the moment to moment plotting of these episodes is beyond ludicrous now, just people constantly doing stupid, bizarre or unnecessary things simply to service the story of fabricate tension.

Episode 6 better strawberry floating improve

Ugh, halfway through the finale now and this is just painful, painful stuff. It's like nobody strawberry floating proof read any of the scripts it check they made at least a small amount of sense.

Except it doesn't. ;)

I genuinely cannot think of a show that I have watched which has so many problems with the moment to moment narrative as this one, where so many situations hinge on people doing stupid things or ignoring known facts or simply abandoning all logic and sense of reality in order to fabricate tension.

The whole conceit of "we're going to head into the meetup but not actually bring the baby" is just bullshit - half the strawberry floating series to date has been based around the fact that every man and his dog has a strawberry floating tracker on the baby, they aren't going to suddenly forget that and be duped by the "LOL teh baby is sleeping!" routine. :fp:

Then you have the nonsense with Kuiil's death, why the strawberry float does IG-11 not come out and help protect the baby (given that this is supposed to be his whole thing) when Kuill is under attack from the two troopers? He clearly felt compelled to come out and retrieve the baby after Kuill was dead so it wasn't that he didn't know what was happening or that he was confined to the ship or something. It's just another piece of bullshit logic to contrive a scenario that is meant to make us feel sad and the tension feel greater, except it doesn't work because it wouldn't have played out like that. The moment is not earned.

Then, after labouring the fact that the IG unit is entirely focussed on "protecting the baby" what does he do when he's reclaimed him, does he take the baby to safety? No - he strawberry floating speeds off into the middle of a squadron of troopers so we can have a whizz bang shooting fight. :fp:

You've got the insane logic of the "we'll give you until night fall" decision from Moff Gideon - what?! Why the strawberry float are you giving them any time at all? This makes zero sense - either strawberry floating kill them now or don't. The whole series has been full of these kinds of attempts at "tension raising" that just fall entirely flat because they are not backed up by internal logic/facts of the show.

Mando and crew were concerned about the numbers of troopers - "There were only supposed to be 4 of them" ... for about 5 minutes before they decide to charge out and take on scores of them following IG's charge of the nonsense brigade. Then you have Mando and crew just stood in the middle of a big open space taking pot shots at troopers all whilst nobody seems able to hit them back. :fp: It's amazingly even more stupid and unbelievable than the shoot out last time Mando was here.

Then they head back into the cantina, because hey why not! And the Moff's plan is to send a single flame trooper to get them? What? Why is that a threat - just strawberry floating kill him like you just killed loads of other troopers. At this point were also supposed to be feeling some extra tension because Mando is hurt, possibly dying... except no that doesn't work either because the Baby is there and you have just in this very episode established that he can strawberry floating force heal people! "Go on without me..." uh, no why don't we just get the kid to heal you? Still despite the fact that any one of them could have just shot the flame trooper really easily for some reason we have to be saved by baby Yoda doing some force gooseberry fool to the trooper. Oh and luckily IG-11 has been stocking up on his first aid sprays from playing Resident Evil so Mando is fine anyway within 5 seconds. strawberry floating hell. :fp: Also where the strawberry float do all the other troopers go at this point, for a cup of tea and a sit down? There are like whole minutes where they are sat in the cantina faffing around and literally anyone could have just walked in and killed them... but no for some reason all the other troopers have strawberry floated off at this point.

Then we go underground and find that loads of the Mando's have been slaughtered... but they said they were going to relocate - they even remind us of this in the "previously on" intro for the episode, so again a moment that is supposed to evoke "feels" is completely undercut because it makes no sense! And why is blacksmith Mando still around? "I need to finish melting all this armour" so, take it with you FFS! :fp:

I could go on - IG-11's pointless sacrifice (why didn't Mando just use his bombs?), Mando switching from "all droids are evil" to crying over the fact that IG is going to die pointlessly is just stupid, the jet pack battle where apparently "until you know it, it will not listen to your commands" translates to - it will work perfectly for you instantly. :fp:

Just layer upon layer of stuff that either doesn't work, doesn't make sense or is just plain bullshit!

After accidentally downloading the entire season, I finished this yesterday.

I thought it was fantastic stuff and just don’t understand the moaning in here. It was easily better than any of the prequel movies and mostly better than any of the sequel movies. Maybe downloading them in one go and binging them helped, rather than having to wait a week between episodes?

I’m looking forward to season two. Having Gus as the big bad will be fantastic.

I enjoyed significant parts of the show but just couldn't ignore some of the problems it has that undercut a lot of the good parts.

I still can't get past that shootout scene at the end of (I think) episode 3 were Mando is hiding on that floating trailer thing about 2m away from his attackers. It was like watching one of the joke shootouts from Police Squad! or Naked Gun but without any self awareness and actually worse.

That’d be a valid criticism if the Mandalorian was a serious crime drama. But it isn’t, it’s Star Wars.

I think a lot of the problems people have with the newer Star Wars movies and TV is that they seem to think it should be taken seriously. It’s entertainment, not a realistic look at a galactic civilisation. Every single Star Wars movie, cartoon and TV show is full of over the top and illogical nonsense, that’s why people like them.

Saying things like “hmm well actually the Holdo manoeuvre wouldn’t work because….” or “it was ridiculous that Mando was hiding so close to the attackers” misses the point of just enjoying what you are watching without overanalysing things. Because space wizards with space swords and space powers is fine, but it goes too far when somebody hides behind a trailer?

Yes and no. There is a reasonable expectation that viewers should be suspending some of their critical faculties when watching any form of entertainment, and the level to which that is necessary and acceptable will vary depending on the show or movie in question, but there is still a bar that a show needs to meet if it is going to work.

Creating any kind of drama or tension requires that you believe in the validity or plausibility of the dangerous situation which the characters are in, if you want a response from the audience - for them to be concerned for the protagonists, feel loss when a character dies, or feel anger or fear toward the baddies then those feelings need to be earned. My opinion is that in a few too many cases The Mandalorian failed to achieve this.

It was definitely still a fun show to watch though, and there is plenty of solid stuff for them to build on from here - I mean it's incredibly rare for a show not to have some wobbles in an opening season. I'm hopeful that season 2 will be even more enjoyable.

Moaning about stuff and pretending to be Roger Ebert (while instead sounding like someone who did Media Studies at GCSE) seems to be the fashion these days.

I want to see a Donald Glover Lando series directed by Taika.

One of us might get our wish:

Taika Waititi, the filmmaker behind the Oscar-nominated Jojo Rabbit and Thor: Ragnarok, has been approached to develop a Star Wars movie, sources tell The Hollywood Reporter.

Mandalorian, the live-action series on Disney+ that became must-watch TV in part thanks to Baby Yoda. He also voiced the popular droid character, IG-11. Additionally, Jojo Rabbit, which he wrote and directed, earlier this week earned six Oscar nominations, including for best picture.

Working on Mandalorian put Waititi in the same sphere as Jon Favreau, the series’ creator, writer and executive producer and who is now emerged as a key architect of the Star Wars universe moving forward. Favreau is also a key player in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, overseen by Feige.

(Separately, there is a sense that Mandalorian could act as a training and testing ground for directors hoping for a larger role in Star Wars. Deborah Chow, who became the first female director to helm anything Star Wars, is now readying to direct the next Star Wars series, the one focusing on Jedi master Obi-Wan Kenobi, with Ewan McGregor set to reprise the role.)

Hey, some people literally make a living out of pretending to be Roger Ebert! Dude has been dead for like 7 years but rogerebert.com still gets a review up for all of the latest movies. ;)
