The child is a strawberry floating liability, really feel for Mando

Not sure how the eggs survived in the cargo bay while they were free falling through the atmosphere and all that

Also confused by how fast sublight travel is in Star Wars universe. Tatooine is outer rim, presumably its light years away from the next nearest star system. Or was that ice planet in the same system as Tatooine?

I'm not sure how sublight works either anymore, I just assumed it was any speed under lightspeed, which would mean that interstellar travel should be impossible or take many years.

Since the journey took the gang from one star system to another in a matter of days rather than hours, I'm going to have to guess that it's considerably faster than what I thought.

To reach the Alpha Centauri from Earth at light speed it would take 4.3 years so 1531 days. If we assumed that Mando needed to travel around the same distance he'd have to be going at least 1500 times the speed of light. Sub-light must be a colloquial term for what ever passes for cruising speed in the Star Wars Universe.

Amusement under late capitalism is the prolongation of work.

Well, considering if you look at a map to find the distance between Hoth and Dagobah it's pretty damn far... We have to assume Luke didn't use lightspeed, yet still manages to cross systems in hours. They've always been inconsistent with space travel.

I always assumed Luke did use lightspeed to reach Dagobah, it was never asserted that he didn't.

Some nerd wrote:Sublight engines, also known as sublight drives, or sublight thrusters were engines that let starships break through an atmosphere and fly through realspace at speeds below the speed of light. In order to attain speeds beyond the light threshold, a ship required a hyperdrive. The most common type of sublight drive was the ion engine. While starfighters used small yet powerful drives, capital ships had vast engines the size of entire buildings.

Technically, the term sublight drive could refer to a wide variety of propulsion techniques: light sails, ramjets, even solid chemical booster rockets. Most sublight drives though used a fusion reaction to break down fuel into charged particles, which were then expelled from the ship in order to create thrust. Because of the heat and mild radioactivity of this thrust, it was illegal to use in or near the atmosphere of most inhabited worlds, though some individuals were not above breaking these laws in order to make a quick getaway.

Sublight engines could accelerate a starship at many thousands of times standard gravity, allowing it to get clear of a planet's gravitational field in a matter of minutes and cross vast distances of realspace. In order to protect its occupants from being killed by the tremendous G-forces involved, starships were equipped with acceleration compensators.

X-Wings have hyperdrives. It's well established in the flight sims etc and they travel to the Battle of Endor outside capital ships iirc.

Is it definitely a different system or could it be a planet in the same twin-sun system as Tatooine? Honestly can't remember whether they said "system" in the episode or just named the planet.

So, what's the no spoilers feeling on season 2 so far?

Haven't got around to starting it yet as the wife has decided she wants to try it to so we need to watch from season 1 again together.

I know they have hyperdrives, but we never see Luke use it in Empire. He's travelling at sublight speeds whenever we see him. Sure, you could say they technically couldn't make the hyperspace effect work for any direction other than dead on, but wouldn't they have just done that had he been in hyperspace?

I'm enjoying it more so far.

I think this has a lot to do with expectations. Going in I was expecting a premium series like Lost or Watchmen: a continuous story told over multiple episodes. Instead we got something much more like The Next Generation: monster of the week eps with a vague background story happening...well, in the background. This was disappointing initially, but now it's settled into this rhythm each ep is actually really fun.

There were some stinkers in the first series, the Seven Samurai ep, the one with the assassin hunt, but 1 and 2 of this series have been excellent.

Excellent, thanks for the info. I think I struggled with the 'monster of the week' format of the first season and also agree that there were a few duds in there which didn't help either!

Hoping to catch up with season 2 soon as it's always fun to watch these as they go out and join in with the reactions

I really like the show but it really hasn't diverged from the monster of the week format.

What's wrong with monster of the week? I think it really suits the western drifter character of Mando.

I don't think there's necessarily a problem with the format, although the execution of it had some issues in this, but for me it was more just that it wasn't what I was expecting from the show so it took time to reframe my thinking about it!

Monster of the week is fine but I do think if they're going with that format the constant characters should be more interesting than Mando and the Child are.

Mando was obviously a bit limited by design but they could have got away with that if the rolling supporting cast of friends and foes each week stood out, but often that wasn't the case. They lacked a compelling "big bad" as well to sit across things. Obviously Gus Fring was meant to fulfill that role but it really didn't work in season 1

It's nice to have something that is basically Xena on TV again.

I do agree with this. The most interesting characters in S1 aka Taika Waititi, Gina Carano and Werner Herzog, were all in what, 2 eps? 3?

They've already had 2 great supporting characters in S2 though.

Oh, I loved that episode. If you loved the Mandalorian focused episodes of The Clone Wars and Rebels, no doubt you'll also love this episode. There's a lot of world building and lore drops, and answers the question we've been wondering since the beginning. Such a great episode that gives us an idea of just where this series is heading.
