They could fudge all this into the same continuity, but it will still run into huge problems and basically have a great big roadblock as they try to move the franchise forward. Better to act now, and leave any future series with a blank page to work on. Otherwise there will always be the question of "how does all this fit into episode 7, 8, 9".
The prequels were initially badly received (though I enjoyed them), and much bullying of Lucas ensued, but today they aren't viewed that badly, and you'll find very few who think ill of the Clone Wars. What's good for the prequels can be good for any era - Rebels and Mandalorian prove this further.
Also, the question of "how does this fit in" has been asked many, many times during the creation of every show and film to date. That's how Star Wars works.
And why would you ditch Carrie Fisher, Harrison Ford and Mark Hamill's last Star Wars roles like that, over films that are actually pretty good? That's insane. All this "mAkE tHe SeQuElS LeGeNdS" crap is getting on my tittays - it's not happening, the films are made, move along.
By the sounds of the announcement, Rogue Squadron might be the first Star Wars film to pierce the post-TRoS veil and move the franchise into a new era, and Acolyte is doing the same in the High Republic.
