Well I've just finished writing my last exam, barring any disaster I have now completed by bachelors degree. \o/

Still no word yet about my masters application though :(

Well I applied for spatial analysis, but as for topics for a thesis I'm not sure. For my undergraduate thesis I wrote about landing site selection for rovers on Mars, but I'm not sure I'd like to continue that.

Spatial analysis sounds like it might involve GIS, guess for a thesis you could form a hypothesis that something you are interested in has changed due to I dunno, a change in demographics? But I guess that could just end up like one of those projects that found that people buy more water melons when there are thunderstorms, i.e. slightly pointless

Is it a conspiracy theory about ESA faking Phobos images?

Nope, they're saying Phobos itself is actually an ancient spaceship :|

I especially like this part:
Compelling and convincing evidence that ... indeed ... this moon CANNOT BE just another "natural astronomical object!"

But is, in fact--

A SHIP!

Yup, GIS, I want to do something relating to the environment, although I like all strands of geography I think the environmental field has the most opportunities. Although I wouldn't mind doing something like recreation/tourism either since then you can use that as an excuse to travel all the time. :shifty:

I'm still laughing at an email I received earlier today...

Subject: Invitation for Rachel Riley

I am writing with an invitation for Rachel Riley on behalf of STEMNET, a charity that promotes Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) subjects to young people and highlights the wide range of careers they can work within using these subjects. We would greatly appreciate Rachel’s support for an exciting STEM event for young people and schools taking place in London on 13th July 2010. Given that she is well known for her work on C4’s Countdown and the fact that she studied mathematics at Oriel College, Oxford, it would be wonderful if she could attend to help demonstrate the links between these subjects and the breadth of related careers that those who study science and maths subjects can take and show the diversity of routes that can be taken.

The 13 July event is ‘The Big Bang London Fair’ at Westminster Kingsway College. It will bring together over two thousand pupils, teachers, parents and businesses from across the Capital to give budding scientists and engineers a chance to demonstrate their work. They will have the opportunity to get involved in hands-on challenges and activities, meet a range of STEM employers and get inspired by STEM - vital to the future of London and the whole UK.

We would be delighted if Rachel could participate in the Fair at some point during the day to suit her diary (the event will run from 10am to 4pm on Tuesday 13th July). A star attraction will be the Bloodhound SSC car, which is being designed by a British team of scientists and engineers to travel at over 1,000 miles per hour and smash the world land speed record.

STEMNET is active in London and across the UK, managing a broad range of programmes to improve interest in STEM subjects in schools. In partnership with LOCOG and the Department for Children, Schools and Families, it is currently running a STEM Challenge programme giving schools the opportunity work on a series of challenges linked to different aspects of the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

I would be grateful if you could confirm whether it is possible for Rachel to join us at the Big Bang London Fair on 13thJuly.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Siobhan Griffiths (STEMNET Press Office)
