Mrs Stool Bloke put up the white garage lights here, but there is no sign of the wooden reindeer.

It is possible, to some extent, to train yourself to be slightly more adaptive to various noises. I'm sensitive to nuisance noise and have a tendency to fixate on it and let myself get irritated, but I've found ways to overcome it in some circumstances.

Beginning of summer, my neighbour put up some really clunky wind chimes, so initially I was very anxious every time I heard them outside my window ("Great! So that's my peace and quiet gone this summer! I've gone from hearing nothing but birdsong and distant noises to this cacophony all day!", etc).

But within a month I wasn't even registering them any more as nuisance noises, they'd become just another background noise. It's annoying that I have to go through that process, but I'd rather have done that than force myself to wear noise cancelling earplugs all day every day.

If I'd done that I would have just been feeding my compulsive tendencies to noise and given in. It can quickly become another crutch that you have to rely on.

That's a great post.

It's very easy to succumb to noise nuisances and fail to tolerate it or blank it out. I get short periods of this, day to day stuff, but things dont linger in my mind.

I've been extremely lucky in the houses ive lived in. I reckon i've lived in around 15-20 houses in 30 years, and i've never encountered a bad neighbour. Sounds crazy really. I have not had 1 single complaint to make during those 30 years. Although ive only lived in 1 flat i think.

Get this right.

My neighbours have young children.

And they like to go outside right?

And play with their friends....and the sounds of childhood laughter sometimes pierce through my window

 I think you're immediately into a losing battle if you're fighting against the sound of children laughing!

I've definitely got a bit of misophonia. I find it greatly irritating when somebody plays something through a phone speaker - doesn't matter what - there's something in the pressure burst of noise from phone speakers which affects me. Plays the same thing through a television or a proper speaker? No problem.

You can definitely train yourself to be less aware of, and therefore less effected by, certian noises. I was given guidance on various mechanisms I could employ to help reduce the impact of my tinnitus when that developed a few years ago and it does genuinely help.

Yeah, these days it pretty much amounts to, "oh yeah I forgot I had tinnitus. And that's OK dude."

Pretty minimal but at first (in my early teens due to bands and fireworks etc) it was hard to accept.

(I should point out I have both tinnitus primarily in my right ear and hyperacusis because I have an "abnormal" auditory processing part of the brain.)

Sometimes it's less about what you hear but how your brain deals with it.

On the other hand, it's probably the very same area of brain functioning that makes me really good at functioning in a band or picking up a rhythm etc. These things aren't necessarily all disability.

Seeing a fair few houses with decorations up already (some have been up for weeks), and as last year it seems to be 'who can out posh the next person'. The house next door had blazing white icicle flashing lights all over their house last year, so this year the house next to them on the other side has got light up reindeer in their front garden. Not to be outdone, the other place has added a piercing white fake tree in their doorway. I swear you could probably see the lights from Bristol. None of this is annoying, save for these lights never get turned off. I'm out really early to walk the dog, and they're on then. They light up the front of leaf blower bloke's house at night too.

Non essential lighting should be taxed, and rich banana splits hate paying them.

So what names, aside from Stool Bloke, does everyone have for their neighbours and why? We have:

Frankenstein (old, gaunt guy who looks grey and is very stiff)
Spider-Man Daddy (when we first moved in, we woke up to see him and his son jogging by our house in Spider-Man costumes)
The Bullfrog (a real beast of a woman)
The Dog Kids (a couple of young first time buyers who have a dog)
Dr Breen (he looks like him)
MasterChef (a fat bloke who doesn't really look like Greg Wallace)

From my old residence:

Denster - Denster wannabe neighbour, bald head, similarly overweight, even down to the mannerisms.
Cuntman - As discussed at length, generally a banana split.
Pressure Wash Bloke - Loves pressure washing everything in sight. Otherwise a nice chap.
The McCanns - A couple that moved in near the end of my tenure. They liked leaving their kids alone in their house while they partied next door with Cuntman.
The Hippo - Bloke a few doors down was was named as such because in his world, it's OK for him to park on the street, despite him having two parking spaces, but not anybody else. He was also overweight. Hypocrisy + overweight = The Hippo.
The Economy - Letting agent that insisted that estate agents were the only thing keeping the economy from caving in during lockdown.

That just means you're the Cuntman of your neighbourhood.

Sinbad - guy nearby who nearly always wears a bandana. Skinny, single and in his 50s with a big pot belly and rides a noisy motorbike.
The Teletubbies - self explanatory family of 4. Slightly nasty perhaps, but we enjoy referring to them this way.

Most others we don't really have nicknames for since they're just regular people we know

All my neighbours are lovely, the nicknames are more to just to identify them rather than something earned because they're twats or something.

I have Zachariah.

In school I read a book called ‘Z is for Zachariah’. It was about a post-apocalyptic world and the cover had a bloke in a full hazmat suit. When I went to Drumstick him ask him why exactly he was thumping on the floor at midnight, he answered it in pretty much that. Turns out he thought 11-2 was the perfect time to paint his entire flat. :dread:

Next door are the Coffin Dodgers, because they spend a lot of time out on their balcony coughin’. Opposite is a lovely bloke who lives with his daughter. Downstairs are builders at the mo.
