It's like they see themselves as accepting the harsh reality of the world by not complaining about having to work hard and just getting on with it. But really they're not accepting the actual harsh reality that systemic failures can mean your efforts have no standing on what happens to you.
It must be very comforting to believe that as long as you work hard and keep your head down you'll be fine and successful. Sort of like believing that God will always have your back. What a lovely universe to live in.
The same people who say they got where they are through merit and hard work alone are the same people who say "it's who you know, not what you know".
