No they couldn't. Nominating a champion was outlawed back in 1756, the monarch must now fight or else face ridicule and utter dishonour.
In that case, GRcade meet and treason?

At today's PMQs, what shall we discuss - the Brexit fallout? The upcoming leadership contests for both major political parties? Nah...
"Maggie Throup, Conservative, asks the PM for some congratulations for schoolchildren who have designed some birthday cards for the Queen. She asks if he will take them to Buckingham Palace on his next visit.
David Cameron says it sounds like "a very good idea and I'm sure Her Majesty will be delighted"."

If we're going all PMQs on the matter, I'm sure my honourable colleague Dan. will join me in congratulating our dearest Queenie in her massive contribution to the UK economy.
The Crown Estate has delivered a record £304.1m to the Treasury after the value of its portfolio rose 9.7% to £12bn.
The payout by the estate, which owns London's Regent Street and the entire UK seabed, was up from £285m.
It comes ahead of a review of the Sovereign Grant - taxpayers' money given to the Queen by the Treasury.
This year the Queen received a grant of nearly £43m, currently calculated as 15% of the Crown Estate's profits.
The Sovereign Grant, which is paid two years in arrears, is reviewed every five years.
Three cheers for Her Maj. Hip Hip......
