I got my hands on a HTC Wildfire for a while today. For a cheaper Android phone its actually surprisingly good. I was expecting it to be pretty slow but it was speedy enough loading webpages like the bbc homepage and checking the live text for todays football. Admittedly the screen is a big step down from the likes of the Desire or iPhone 4 but I'd have no trouble recomending one of them to someone over something like the Xperia Mini.

A keyboard is a keyboard. Personally I like the stock Android one over the iPhone or Sense one. I know lots of people love Swype but I just don't get on with it. But you do have the option of changing the keyboard on the Android, and the best ones can be regarded at the very least as good as the iPhone one.

Just to clarify before this keyboard thing gets out of hand, all I was saying was that the iPhone one is lovely, meaning it doesn't really matter that you can't change it (which is not to say that the lack of choice is a good thing). I'm not saying it's the uncontested greatest keyboard ever. :P

I use Swype. Came built into the Galaxy and it's really grown on me. I can treat it like a normal Android keyboard if I feel like it, but for longer words, I can just swipe my finger across the letters and usually it makes a very good guess as to what I meant. Does wonders for my typing speed and spelling :)

Each to their own though.

I type with my thumbs, and I have massive thumbs,. I found when Swyping I sometimes missed the letter and it picked the wrong one.

Walked into T-Mobile today to get a HTC Desire. Was all excited, my first ever contract phone etc etc.

Really wasn't expecting them to grill me over my financial credentials. I completely strawberry floated up my security questions (credit card balance, current amount credit). The staff tried really hard to get authorisation from their vacant manager, who was on holiday or something, but he wouldn't answer the phone. Then tried to send my ID details to head office. But the store was closing and I left empty handed. :(

Hopefully the verification will come through tomorrow and I'll go collect.

Samsung Galaxy tablet; iPad alternative. Supports phone calls and has flash, probably cheaper too. Inb4 Apple fanboys say "who the hell wants a phone that huge?"

Also I saw on Samsung's site for the Galaxy S that it's first selling point is http://www.samsung.com/uk/consumer/mobi ... prd_detail  Image

So finally got my Desire. Absolutely loving it. One question though....do all apps get installed on the phone's internal memory, or is there a way to fit them on the SD card?

Gonna start downloading some of the apps you guys have recommended!

If it's on 2.2 then Apps can be moved to the SD if the app supports it. Go to the Apps section of your settings and select an App to see if it supports it.

Some download a small exe to the phone's memory and then the rest (textures and gooseberry fool) to the SD.

Cool, cheers.

I'm on 2.1 at the moment, but I take it the 2.2 update will happen automatically whenever it's ready? Or do I have to go search for it?

I've got hold of a Dell Streak to test for work...
the device itself is pretty cool, but i have a couple of things perhaps someone could help with.
first of all, will android tell me somewhere how much data i've downloaded?
secondly, it seems to be an issue for others too, but i can't download anything from the marketplace, everything just says 'starting download' and nothing happens.
and it's only android 1.6, no update yet.

The Market has being doing that to me recently as well (as in the last couple of days). No idea why but I did forget that I was queuing up some apps and went out, came back and they had downloaded whilst I was walking around.

So what kind of things can I expect with my Android phone? I'm assuming the HTC Legend will come with the latest version. I'm used to using my Ipod touch and those apps. What are the plus points? I want my phone to come on Thursday, but I bet it's not here til after my holiday
:(

Also as I've never had a internet phone. I assume there's an option to choose when 3G or whatever is on? The guy I was talking to in the shop said he used up about 1GB of data as he had facebook on all the time without realising. *shrug*

If you hold down the power button you get the option to turn off Mobile Network which just means it uses only Wi-Fi.

Well I think the Legend is pretty much the same as the Desire, which I just got, and I'm really liking it. I couldn't tell you what differences there are between android and iPhone/touch as I've never really used Apple products. But I guess one of the benefits its the diversity of apps. I just downloaded a free Guardian app, which downloads stories from The Guardian site over WiFi, then lets you browse them offline. Works brilliantly, but as it's totally unofficial I doubt you'd find it on the iTunes store.

Oh and the whole widget/customisation is really good. I'm not sure to what extent you can customise iPhone's home screens, but with Android you can have everything exactly where you want it. I love that kind of thing, even though I end up spending hours deciding where all the stuff goes.

I've been using page 4 as my "home" screen because it's right in the middle and no screen is more than three flicks away that way.

I had a similar issue when I got my phone. It took a day or so for O2 to sort out my connection properly.

Most tablets I've seen are only on Android 1.6 for some reason. I'm surprised you have access to a market at all, to be honest. Many of the cheaper tabs rely on installing from APKs.

If your running Sense, which you should be be on a stock Legend, there's widget switches for Wifi, 3G, GPS and Bluetooth. Also you can download something like taskkiller to kill off back ground apps (and ignore others) if you want.

Had a crap phone about nine months ago and was locked in to a T Mobile contract. Managed to get a Pulse for £100 which at first I was very happy with. For the price it seemed great. Had a lot of problems recently however. Just been trying to update it, and it cut out to the a blue screen saying it couldn't read RAM disk. I thought that was it but I managed to figure out how to do a factory reset via the SD card and so looks like I haven't bricked it. Gonna try updating it again now....Andorid 2 better be worth it....

It will happen OTA, what network are you on though? Some networks hold back updates, because they're gay like that.
