I have heard conflicting reports. I heard it was 90 mph and also 130mph. Either way, you will probably see worse crashes in Oz against the walls and it would be unusual if someone had to sit out a race (it is rare for drivers to be injured). Since the car was virtually undamaged from the pics we have seen, and the HANS device is supposed to minimise the shaking of the head, it all seems very strange to me.

Keep coming across articles saying it was because he received an electrical shock in the car.

Such a shame the best driver will be missing the first race of the season.

Not really, HANS can only do so much. As I say, a slightly odd angle or an unusual buffeting can still shake the brain up in an odd way. It's not really about speed a lot of the time.

It just seems unusual I guess, even more so given Mclaren and Alonso have been a bit tight lipped.

I haven't actually seen the crash but I think it was a side impact? If so then there is much less crumple zone to slow you down and g forces would be far higher than with a head on impact.

Yeah, I read something like that too and another one about him inhaling poisonous fumes, hence him being unconscious when he hit the wall (is that true?). Some pundits seem to think Honda are covering something up.

Anyway, I feel this may be significant; laps and mileage from pre-season testing, by manufacturer:
Engine constructor
1. Mercedes 3996 laps 18,378km
2. Ferrari 2427 laps 11,132km
3. Renault 2149 laps 9886km
4. Honda 380 laps 1751km

Renault supplied more teams last season (Lotus have switched to Merc) and recovered from a horrible mess in testing, whereas Honda don't have that.

I can't see McLaren being anything other than a shambles this season. As my friend said, Alonso missing the first race probably won't matter too much cause he'd probably not get any points anyway.

I've heard that Alonso was in hospital for 4 nights - which would be pretty extreme caution for a concussion. Don't think anyone really knows the full circumstances of the crash though, or the angles/impact etc, so there's a lot of speculation.

Shame to not see the full grid for the first race, although Magnussen's hardly a bad/sub-par replacement.

Interesting. A friend of mine has a mate who works for them too and he seems to think Ferrari will be good. Not Mercedes-good, but good.

The Ferrari is a really pretty car this year, amazing what a new nose can do.

I suppose it depends on what your friend and my contact does at Red Bull. I was there recently and know that they are building another unit right next to their current units specifically to work with Renault on the engines so I assume this means they will be working with Renault for some time.

But don't tell anyone I mentioned this. :shifty:

I don't see why they bother, all that's going to happen is they'll turn up for a handful of races, bankrupt the parent company and lose all sponsor interest.

Better to just use the money they're going to waste this race to all the staff that are inevitably going to get let go, at least they'll get a good severance package.

They'll be running a 2014 Ferrari engine, with an untested 'upgraded' 2014 Marrusia chassis.

Then they will get most of the weekend off because they won't qualify.
