Great win for Leclerc. Bottas really doesn't have a champions edge at the moment. Merc got their strategy spot on. Had Hamilton got by it would have been a real chance at a 1-2. Just the engine wasn't quite there.

Difficult to know where Vettel goes from here. Might be best for him to take some time away from F1. He only seems to be harming his reputation at the moment.

Yeah great win for him, definitely seems like the future star for Ferrari. Cue unreal podium ceremony shortly :toot:

I’ve never been one to speculate about Vettel’s future in the sport but mentally he just seems to have checked out since Monza 2018 where his title hopes went from slim to nil thanks to him spinning (again). Since then he’s just been a lot messier (granted he’s always been slightly messier and error prone than say Hamilton who is frankly a machine in an F1 car, very rarely making mistakes) and only really had a good, clean race a handful of times since. I’ve no idea if he just needs rid of Ferrari or what he needs to get back to his old self (although he still seems his usual self off the track in interviews, media pieces and the like). He just doesn’t seem to be loving driving in F1 anymore, sadly his recent form at Ferrari will slightly taint his many great performances in F1 if he does call it quits at the end of the season.

Hats off to Leclerc once again, top race from him again for the 2nd race running.

If he leaves F1, I don’t see him coming back

Vettel usually bails when a team-mate has him covered (see Ricciardo) but he has nowhere to go. And for Ferrari, who do they get to replace him?

Controversial opinion, but I don't think Vettel is as good as his four titles suggest. He is still the same crash kid he was when he started. I think the dominant Red Bull didn't help, as his rivals at the time like Hamilton and Alonso were fighting for positions, he was just cruising around at the front. I don't think he got the apprenticeship most people get as they develop in their careers. He just had a dominant car too young.

When under pressure, he has always made these kinds of mistakes.

Vettel is under contract for 2020 anyway and Ferrari seem happy/content enough to carry on with their the current line up (judging by previous comments from Binotto) so unless he walks away he’s got a seat for next year to evaluate his options for 2021, judging by unhappy he seems it wouldn’t surprise me if he did call it a day after 2020, as to me he just doesn’t seem as up for it as he has in the past which is a shame. As much as I’d like to see Vettel back at Red Bull to see if he can regain his previous form which has gone awry in the past year and a couple of months (basically since Germany 2018) it’s probably not going to happen for 2020 (unless he ends his contract with Ferrari) and very slim for 2021 but even then Red Bull is very much Max’s team right now but I suppose he could go elsewhere if Red Bull are still in the same performance area, ie challenging for wins but not the WDC/WCC and then Vettel going back to end his career with his old team looks semi-plausible.

On the off chance he does call it a day at the end of 2019 I dare say Ferrari would have a lot of drivers getting in touch offering their services and telling them how much their buy out clause is in their contract so getting a replacement probably wouldn’t be an issue.

I also think 2014 was a bit of a funny one, sure Vettel got beat by Ricciardo fair and square but with the clause he had in his contract and a seat opening up at his dream childhood team of Ferrari I really don’t think he’d turned down the opportunity even if he was beating Ricciardo but still below 3rd in the championship (which I believe was his clause, if he wasn’t 3rd by a certain point in the season he could leave/terminate his contract),

I agree with you and have always thought that of Vettel he got spoilt early on with RBR when he never got experience in the midfield working his way up to a big team. I mean look at the spoilt stuff he did too Webber because he thought he deserved wins more then Mark, when on some days Mark deserved wins and he went against team orders or he crashed into him.

So many other drivers wait years to get a win he got lucky early on and at a time RBR were dominant due to the changes in rules at the time.

I just don’t think it’s his forte, Hamilton walked into a race winning (and should have been championship winning for one of their drivers) car in his first season and he’s a superb wheel to wheel racer, probably up there with the best of them across the generations of F1 drivers.

Leclerc is driving brilliantly at the moment, it really does seem to have rattled Seb and his constant cock ups remind me of 2011 spec Lewis Hamilton.

I can't recall Hamilton ever having a year as bad as Vettel seems to be having. Vettel seems like a driver who is really past his prime, almost like Schumacher during patches of 2005 or when he came back in 2009.

Hamilton did have a few coming together with Massa throughout 2011 but on the whole I think he had a better year on the whole than Vettel is having so far although it was a few years back so I might not be remembering quite correctly

Wasn't just the Massa incidents, he ploughed Maldonado into the barrier at Monaco, and his crash at Spa was probably the most cack handed bit of overtaking he's ever tried.

I’d forgotten about those other two incidents, if you take it in calendar years then it’s up for there comparing Vettel’s Monza 2018 to 19 to Hamilton’s 2011 season. Vettel has a few races to try and turn it around this year, it’d be good for his confidence if he could trounce Leclerc round Singapore, a track Vettel has loved and gone very well at most years he’s been there, 2017 aside :shifty:

Thought Leclerc was fortunate to get away with that defending but still a strong drive, he is dominating Vettel at the moment. Have always thought Vettel was worse than his record suggests but I would like to see him rediscover his mojo, could be a fantastic fight with Leclerc.

It really was a massive balls up on every possible level.

Martin Brundle's grid walk from that day though was TV gold...
