Well that’s testing all over and done with, as with any season it’ll be interesting to see how the teams testing form lines up with their actual form over the first couple of weekends.

I bet i'm not the only one who's hoping the Merc will be extra slow.

Regardless of testing times I think it’ll be a close start to the season again, just hope it stays close all the way through as in the latter stages of 2018 Mercedes did seem to find a bit more performance than Ferrari.

Even with the Merc's performance gains, Ferrari and Vettel still threw it all away.

Ferrari moving it's Marlboro advertising for Melbourne. But bu but it's nothing to do with tobacco!

Race in a week then. I'm not really hyped as I'd normally be as the testing coverage on sky was really poor this year with no Kravitz analysis so I didn't watch much of it.

Seems Paddy Lowe is taking a leave of absence from Williams just before the season truly starts. There have been rumours he'd be getting the sack for a while now and with the FIA saying the new front suspension and mirrors are illegal it's just another issue for the team which is already struggling.

Sad times. :(

Yep, taking it from terrestrial TV was the worst move they've ever made in the UK.
Sure they can make more money from Sky but the brand is going to crumble in popularity here just due to the lack of exposure as most people just aren't willing to pay the price asked for live coverage.

Hamilton: F1's reduced free-to-air TV presence doesn't make sense

Five-time world champion Lewis Hamilton says it does not make sense to block or deter Formula 1 fans from watching races by reducing free-to-air television coverage.

F1's broadcast deal with Sky means UK-based fans need a subscription to the broadcaster's dedicated channel to watch every grand prix live this season.

The UK's free-to-air options have now been reduced to highlights and live coverage of the British Grand Prix, which Hamilton said is "definitely not cool".

While he said he does not understand the move to pay TV and that it is "not my job to come up with the answers for that", Hamilton said he was not convinced by the move.

"The more people you have at the grand prix, the more atmosphere it is," he said.

"It is the fans that makes the sport what it is, so the more you block them or deter them the worse the business is going to be for the people that own it.

"But that is nothing to do with me. When the fans do come or the people that I do get to meet at the races, I try to utilise the opportunity to connect with them."

Hamilton said he grew up watching F1 races on the BBC "and it was awesome".

He also expressed sympathy for fans being hit by increased costs to follow grands prix, and said he doubts the number of viewers is going to increase.

"It is bloody expensive nowadays with everything you have in your home, with all your insurance and all the things you do end up paying," he said.

"And on top of that you have to pay for TV and for a TV licence, which is ridiculous.

"[I am] pretty sure that number is not going to change, because the economy, it is a difficult time for everyone particularly now, so it is a shame that the fans are not getting to see as much."

Sky Sports has been the only channel allowed to broadcast live coverage of every F1 weekend in the UK since 2012.

It took advantage of cost cuts that forced the BBC to renegotiate a deal that should have made it the exclusive home of F1 until the end of 2013.

While Sky Sports F1 showed every race live, the BBC had the right to broadcast 10 races live and the remaining events as highlights - a deal Channel 4 took over from 2016 to '18.

Sky recently announced its channel will broadcast IndyCar races live this season as a supplement to its F1 coverage.

This was sadly, always going to be a slippery slope the moment Sky first struck a deal for F1, and is largely the culmination of a lost decade in which the massive fanbase and goodwill surrounding the sport at the end of 2008 (highest uk viewership ever) has been squandered.

Makes a change to have a multimillionaire like Lewis Hamilton who’s actually more in touch with Joe Public’s spending habits.

I used to watch the UEFA Champions League religiously when it was on ITV and Sky Sports. Once it went to BT and became impossible to watch at all even if I wanted to, it’s amazing how with time you cease to care and then don’t miss it. I now just watch the final on YouTube. Now imagine that scenario but with a younger generation who will never grow up watching F1 in the first place, or have greatly reduced access to it on free TV.

Also say for example a pub has Sky Sports and there is a football game on & the F1 is on the same time, its guaranteed the Pub will be showing the Football and not F1.

Yeah having an exclusive deal behind a paywall was never going to be great in the long run, as people are priced out of it (or fed up paying) viewership will continue to decline. I really hope Liberty can try and get out of their exclusive deal (I believe it was good old Bernie who actually signed it off though wasn’t it?) before it naturally comes to an end, I can’t remember just how many years it runs for though. Or if they can’t get out of this deal at lest broker a deal with Sky where fans in the UK can at least sign up to F1TV and stream all the sessions live as well as being able to catch up with them if they can’t watch them live. While this is still not ideal it’d be better then the almost monopoly Sky has on the F1 coverage at the moment.

I wouldn’t have been even started watching F1 if it wasn’t for it being on the BBC, it really does need to go back to free to air and ideally sooner rather than later.

Picked up the season preview issue of Autosport today, i generally buy the mag twice a year, once now, and again when they do the end of season review.

The thing is though, i simply wouldn't want to watch a grand prix sat here at my desk rather than in front of the TV, especially were i being forced to pay for doing so.

F1TV is a pointless exercise as far as i'm concerned, and i won't be happy until races are broadcast properly on free to air TV again.

I never buy Autosport but F1 Racing is the one magazine I still have a subscription to, as handy as online news is I still like reading it on paper. F1 Racing also has some really nice features in as well.

I do understand that F1TV wouldn’t be an ideal replacement for a free to air TV deal showing all of the races live again, I still think it could be a decent compromise for some people though. If they released a streaming app for smart TV’s or Amazon Fire Stick’s then it’d act pretty similar to just watching on your TV anyway, sadly with an added cost involved (although still nowhere near what it costs to have a Sky subscription with Sky Sports F1, especially once the initial contract is up where they try and lure you in with lower prices.

One of the issues with paywalling F1 on a dedicated channel or network is that it relies on fans also being interested in qualifying and all the supplemental programming and documentaries, otherwise you're basically asking people to pay anywhere from £8.99 (£189 a year, though you can take off the British) for an individual race (NowTV) to £32 a month minimum for a monthly Sky sub.

My opinion of Hamilton just went up. The costs are why I can no longer properly follow F1. It's just too damn expensive on top of everything else.
