I would gladly pay for F1TV Pro but thanks to the Sky deal that's just not possible. NowTV is still 720p isn't it? £190 without access to F1 archives and mediocre picture quality just isn't worth it. I've heard you can get it down to around £150 if you buy a selection of day and week passes and activate at certain times, but it's all way too much hassle and still about £100 too much.

Apparently there's a multi (21) part Netflix documentary out today called Formula 1: Drive to Survive, which has been filming the teams for the past 12 months.

Apart from Ferrari and Mercedes who wouldn't give any access of course

starting from 2019 a point will be awarded for setting fastest lap. Lot's of other championships have had this for years as well as a point for Pole

About time. Will make a surprising difference in tight championship battles.

Stuck in traffic? Hang back, bolt on some new tyres on your last stint and try to bag an extra point.

Not a fan of points for fastest laps or getting pole position.

I saw on twitter that this is only for people running in the top 10 at the end of the Grand Prix anyway, which makes it a little pointless in my opinion if it’s true, I’ve not read anything into it yet.

If that's true then it's crap.

Sadly it seems to be true,

The FIA World Motor Sport Council has approved plans for an extra Formula 1 World Championship point to be awarded for fastest lap, starting from the opening race of the 2019 season in Melbourne.

The initiative, which was not mentioned in Thursday's WMSC bulletin, now has to be passed by an e-vote of the F1 Commission to be added to the Sporting Regulations before the first race.

It had already gone through the Sporting Working Group and the Strategy Group, and would usually go to the Commission before the WMSC. However, on this occasion, the e-vote was not completed beforehand, so the usual approval procedure was reversed.

Formula E also awards a point for fastest lap, but unlike in the all-electric series, in F1 the bonus point will only be awarded if the driver concerned finishes in the top 10.

This is to stop drivers who are well outside the points and with nothing to lose making a last minute stop for fresh tyres.

The change takes F1 back to its roots, as a point was awarded for fastest lap over the first 10 years of the World Championship in 1950-’59.

It was crucial to the outcome in 1958, when Mike Hawthorn pipped Stirling Moss to the title.

Had an extra point been awarded for setting fastest lap in 2008, Felipe Massa would have beaten Lewis Hamilton to that year's title - with the proviso that none of the drivers were competing on the basis that scoring fastest lap was relevant.

That is the only example since 2000 where fastest lap points would have altered the drivers' champion.

I’d have thought it’d be better to allow everyone to compete for it, that way a driver could chuck on a set of the softest tyres at the end of a race and see who can go quickest. Would certainly help some of the teams near the rear to get the odd point or two if they can’t score in the actual classification standings.

Only watched the first episode but it's pretty good so far. It gives a completely different (and uncensored) viewpoint than you'd usually see.

They are filming this year for a season 2 and trying to get all teams on board.

Yet another thing to watch on Netflix. :dread: I'd read though that Ferrari eventually relented somewhat late during filming so some of the later episodes in the series do feature them. Haven't seen it though so could be wrong.

As for point for the fastest lap, interesting and could make things a bit more interesting. Presumably though if the fastest lap is by someone outside the top 10 then the point just doesn't get awarded to anybody.

Don't see the point in having an also ran chuck on quick tyres and get a point for fastest lap. I like its introduction for the top 10 as it encourages people to push to the end which could keep things spicy for longer.

I'm several episodes into the Netflix documentary. It's alright but there seems to be a very deliberate attempt to make it edgy and high stakes. The constant swearing is pretty cringe worthy and it really tries to make rather inconsequential stuff seem like life and death. I guess they have to as neither Ferrari or Mercedes are involved but it's a bit much at times.

That's an odd point of view on the fastest lap point surely if you're the quickest over a lap then you get the point whether you're first or last. I have not searched this but I'm pretty sure that generally the fastest lap comes from within the top 6 cars most of the time so why not let the also run cars get a chance of a point, you never know it might make it a little more interesting than the dull precession that it generally ends up being.

I'd have let everybody have a shot at the point and just said the final 5 laps don't count for fastest lap.

Formula E on tomorrow morning on BBC2. More excited for it than the F1 season. Last few races I've needed to watch twice because so much happens.

By the time the end of the race comes around the cars are usually at a point whereby a slower team can throw on quick tyres and basically do a qualifying lap and take fastest lap of the race. Alonso has done this several times in the McLaren. The point of this rule, I imagine, is likely to make it worth the leaders while to take a risk and try and bang in a couple of quick laps at the end, prompting some kind of exciting incident or just something else to talk about. They wouldn’t normally do this as it’s a risk to strain the car unnecessarily and it’s more likely to lead to a driver error than just coasting home. A top team is never going to switch to faster tyres for the sake of an extra point (unless they had a massive lead I suppose), however a smaller, slower team would. If the point is available to the slower teams they’ll just bring their cars in to try and snap it up which would negate the whole point of introducing it in the first place. A lead car driver gambling for it and skidding off or having a car failure and losing everything is exciting. A lower team doing one quick lap at the end of the race for a largely inconsequential point is not.

Finished the documentary series on Netflix. It actually picked up a bit in the second half, though it's not really as much a documentary as it is an advertisement. It doesn't seem so concerned with interesting insight or accurate portrayal of the world of F1 as it does creating a drama, real or manufactured doesn't seem to matter.

Sergio Perez and Haas team don't come out of it particularly well and it reminds you what a dick Verstappen is. Surprisingly Ricciardo and Horner don't come across great either. The younger drivers get given the most leg up, Occon, Gasly and Le Clerc in particular.

I've watched two episodes so far and my initial impressions are similar to this. Gene Haas is coming across as a terrible person to work under, so far.
