It might help if they get rid of the chicane before that hairpin which leads on to the back straight. Just make it a wider radius single hairpin (use the escape road as the track) like the one at Montreal. Doing so might allow the cars to run closer through there so that there is more overtaking on the straight.

Yes and no most likely, most of the time these days unless you’re in one of the top 3 cars then the majority leave their overtaking till after the 2nd DRS zone anyway so removing the hairpin before the first straight might not help. It could do if the DRS detection zone was moved till after the first hairpin but then people could just force a driver wide by braking super late and still probably get DRS which wouldn’t exactly make for fair racing in my opinion. They could move to a Canada style setup where the detection point is a decent way down the back straight but I don’t think unless they change the following couple chicanes it would change much really.

Oh Ferrari :fp:

Leclerc might well be lined up for a DQ after the race before the race has even started, the fuel load they’ve said they put into his car is different from what’s actually in the car.

All this talk of Hamilton going to Ferrari. Why would he join this shambles :fp:

Though Russell beat Kubica 21-0 in quali, noticing a pattern in multiple races where Russell has a poor start and Kubica overtakes him. Then later in the race, Russell overtakes him back again. Something for Russell to work on

Looking set for a Hamilton win here, Leclerc 5 seconds off already after 9 laps. Vettel nowhere on the soft tyres, yet another bizarre decision from FerrariM guessing it was done to minimise chance of them colliding on track.

Yep, Vettel could’ve done with getting past Verstappen whilst his tyres were still cold

No one in their right mind would join Ferrari right now, I get it is a childhood dream/dream for many drivers but they are just a shambles in most areas this season, it’d take an utterly dominant 2020 for someone like Hamilton to even consider it but even then I’d wager Mercedes would adapt to the new rules a lot better,

Weirdly enough this race was a lot better before DRS got reactivated.

2019 season over and done, they really need to end with a better race than Abu Dhabi. Sky really do love bashing Vettel as well don’t they, granted he’s had a poor season by a 4 x WDC’s standards but they way they talk about him in comparison to Leclerc it’s like he’s some sort of racing god that is on a level with Hamilton (they just said he’s like Hamilton, there every weekend and just on it), Leclerc has had a cracking season but I’m not sure if they can compare him to the likes of Hamilton just yet.

On the whole it’s been a decent season, a shame the WCC and WDC were more or less decided once Mercedes started the year with 5, 1-2 finishes but since France it’s had some cracking races and some poor ones. I’m still at a slight loss about where Ferrari’s pre season pace went, obviously we knew Mercedes would be quicker as they hadn’t put their upgrades on but according to people in the know, Ferrari looked to have a huge advantage that vanished by Australia. What a different season it could have been had the Ferrari and Mercedes been evenly matched.

Another season in the books and Hamilton showing no signs of slowing down now that Schumachers all time record of wins is in touching distance. Hopfully Ferrari get their act together and with Redbull push Merc all the way so we can see Hamilton having to push against Leclerc and Verstappen

What a surprise - Ferrari fined 50k. Any other team and they would have been DQed.

A few seasons ago and Schumacher’s records (well race wins and WDC’s) looked almost unattainable, even when Vettel got 4 on the bounce with a couple of dominant seasons in there but now it’s very likely both will be matched next year if Mercedes are on form.

Sounded like a pretty much slam dunk DQ before the race, bit of a joke. Edit, 4.88kgs is a lot, that’s a lot more fuel to potentially burn throughout a race.... maybe the power unit isn’t that much better, maybe they just had loads more fuel to burn through? They could have been doing it all season if they’ve not been caught up until now.

I'm pretty sure that's the year when the battle for the lead between Alonso and Schumi was raging with just a couple of laps to go, only for ITV to go for an ad break.

That said, the coverage was still better than what we have now, i don't even know if there'll be highlights on C4 next year.

It'll never top the 1998 showdown between hakkinen and schumacher, with schumi carving through the pack having started from the back due to stalling on the grid.

ADVERT BREAK

On returning to the footage "you are looking at the 1998 world champion!"

Schumacher had a puncture during the break thus deciding the title :fp:

There was also Hungary 1997.

Damon Hill in his Arrows is challenging Schumi for the lead... AD BREAK!

Hill now leads and we missed both the move and Murray Walker's reaction to it.

I’m not one to reminisce about it too much but every time I catch a pole lap or a race from before 2014 I just love the engine sound from the cars

Also what a great last few laps between Schumacher and Alonso! Don’t get to see anything like that these days, cars and tyres just overheat after a handful of laps meaning they need to back off :(

and the "battle" would only last a few seconds till they get to the DRS zone for an easy overtake.

God some of those Rally cars sound ace :datass:

No real surprise that Germany 2019 got voted the race of the decade by fans, was an eventful race from lights out to finish! One of Vettel’s few genuinely great drives of a relatively poor season by his standards.

I was actually going to bump this anyway just to say I’m going to work on a 2020 general motorsport thread when I get a little bit of free time (so maybe this evening), any other motorsports people would like to get a mention in the first post rather than a main focus on Formula One?
