It does look like Bahrain put pressure on Liberty, if the planet F1 website is to be believed regarding the first test of the new cars. If that's true then Wow a track demanding rights and exclusivity

As such Bahrain asked Liberty Media for the right to host a “world premiere of the season” or even a combined launch. The teams are said to have ruled that out, each wanting their own event.

The teams were then, Motorsport.com reports, “asked to use temporary liveries in Montmelò, a way to meet Bahrain’s demands”.

They said no to that too, several teams explaining “that they are struggling with already tight deadlines, and a double paint job would still have cost time and money, and in addition, the teams would still have shown their colours in the official presentations.”

https://www.planetf1.com/news/barcelona ... exclusive/

Formula 1’s decision to call the first Spanish test a “pre-season session”, and run it behind closed doors, has reportedly been made to protect the Bahrain brand as the season-opener.

Last week Formula 1 confirmed that there would be two pre-season on-track events, the first being held at Spain’s Circuit de Catalunya-Barcelona and the second at Bahrain’s Sakhir circuit.
But, according to the official tweet, the Spanish run is a “pre-season session” while the Bahrain outing is the “official pre-season test”.
The other notable difference between the two is that there will be no TV coverage in Barcelona nor will fans be allowed to attend.
Bahrain will be the opposite with full coverage, including live television, access for the media and fans can also head to the circuit to watch the action.

And all of this is, according to the Italian edition of Motorsport.com, being done to protect Bahrain’s standing as the season-opening event.

With Formula 1 introducing all-new cars this season, the 2022 challengers based on ground effect aerodynamics and sporting simpler front and rear wings, everyone wants a first-look at the new cars.

Liberty Media, as a compromise given how much Bahrain pays to be the first event on the calendar, decided to run the Spanish test behind closed doors – with the current Covid situation in Spain contributing to this – limiting what the public will be able to see, and even limiting media coverage.

Bahrain will therefore be the exclusive first test offering the first absolute coverage of the all-new cars.

That Hill car model

Ive got some F1 themed paintings and stuff in the loft that I've not put up since we moved here. Next time I'm up there I'll get some photos.

Onyx used to produce great F1 models, i don't think they exist now though sadly.

I must admit also, i was surprised when i discovered at the time that the model company was also a fully fledged team in 1989/90 (the Onyx logo on the real car is identical to that used on the model car boxes).

I just can’t believe Liberty have basically bent over to accommodate Bahrains wishes as the sole, official pre season test :fp:

On the model F1 car front, I’m definitely going to get myself one, I’ll just wait till they’ve actually shown off images of the one I’m interested in and go from there!

It is good to see McLaren are generally on the way back up, fingers crossed we see something similar from Williams over the coming years. Not quite sure why they get much needed extra funding and almost immediately thought “lets buy an Indycar team and start an Extreme E team”

One week to go till we see our first glimpse of a 2022 F1 car :toot:

Edit, Red Bull showing theirs off on the 9th of February :toot:

For those that don't follow f1 much, the cars you see at these launches are very much for show and will be missing a lot of the secret aero parts which will then show up at the first tests.

Do you meant the pre test shakedown or the official first test? :shifty:

I think the teams will actually like having it run behind closed doors (even if it is crap for fans) as it means their first race spec aero package can have another X days being worked rather than just being rushed out the door and bolted onto the car, the launch spec cars (and what we might see in the small amount of coverage from Spain) will most likely be very different from what we see at the first race weekend. The development race should be just as much fun this year!

I assume the new red bull will be escorted on to the stage by a safety car.

I’ve heard they’re changing the naming convention of the car as well, its being called the RB18 for now but when they announce if on stage it’ll the MM01.

Horner: "Listen...Michael. About this car launch. Look...it's clear we were in the best position to be first. I mean... what else can we do here?"

Michael: "Okay. I'll take that on board? Thank you Christian?"
