Why don’t they just cram qualifying and the race into one day if they’re desperate to get it on the calendar without too much interference in the rest of the calendar? Skipping practice would be no bad thing either, I bet most of the teams make minor changes at most throughout practice and the setup they arrive with is pretty good anyway.

Testing also getting underway today, 20 minutes in and no one has broke down yet

Day 1 of testing over and done with.

Mercedes 1-2, Mercedes clone in 3rd. Fantastic day in one regard though, no red flags! Verstappen topped the individual lap tally with 167.

That Racing Point is such a blatant copy of last years Mercedes.

Banning the pit screens has given us some great shots of the cars and power unit packaging. :datass:

I thought they already banned pit screens years ago

I think they were banned from the pitlane during a normal racing weekend but they have been allowed during testing until now.

They’re still allowed this year even, only if the teams have to remove the floor. Anything else they have to keep the shutters open, although I’m sure I caught Ferrari doing their usual human blockade to stop people staring too much.

Thought this was worth posting as well,

Don’t know if its the difference in the angle of the cars or if the rear wing regs have changed for this year (RP’s looks massive), as other than that they really are uncannily similar though and surely puts Racing Point on a very strong footing to start the season.

So very nearly got the end of day 2 with no red flags, if I had to guess it looks like Kimi has run out of fuel as nothing went pop or bang.

Very interesting from Mercedes as well, moveable steering wheel that changes the toe of the front tyres to better control the front tyre temps on the straights.

Edit, early finish for the day, top three was Kimi, Perez and Ricciardo. Mercedes W10 doing wonders against 2020 cars :shifty:

Mercedes showing a bit of pace this morning with a 1:15.7.

Their fancy ‘DAS’ system has also been banned for 2021, guess no other teams will bother investing in it for this season alone except maybe Red Bull and Ferrari.

It's pretty amazing to see how quickly they ban innovation.
I assume the other teams all moaned like hell and the FIA just folded instantly.

Innovation is no longer allowed in F1, as the FIA design the cars now.

They might as well just make it like Indycar with the way things are going.

Now now, it is allowed, just only for a season

That’s test 1 over and done with, I know it’s only testing but my gut is telling me this year has Mercedes written all over it again. They’ve been reliable, quick and probably haven’t pushed things too hard just yet.

You just know if Mercedes started the season with a gooseberry fool car it would only take them a race or two to sort their issues out. Clinically efficient is the only way to describe their F1 operation and the only team able to develop a car at a similar pace is Red Bull as Ferrari consistently shoot themselves in the foot, pissing away any advantage they may have.

I'd be more excited for the upcoming season were there a second Merc driver capable of beating Hamilton (as Rosberg did in 2016).

Bottas is a good driver, but it's like the Schumi/Barrichello partnership all over again.

Ferrari may well have shot themselves in the foot before the season gets going, with the rumours that the engineering department weren’t too pleased with the car before testing got underway and now Binotto saying that they’re slightly on the back foot.

As Ricciardo said in an interview today, it’s the chasing teams who should be coming up with new ideas (like DAS) and Mercedes reacting to them while we actually have Mercedes dominating the WDC & WCC since 2014 and still pushing every season to stay ahead, they push all season as well if needed, Red Bull are the only ones who can match them for in season development, Ferrari have been very hit or miss in this area, normally a miss as well!

It’s why it’s hard to complain about Mercedes, granted when you look at the stats it’s unbelievably one sided to Mercedes but when they’re the complete package (on and off track) and still have the drive and passion to keep pushing and innovating to stay clear of the pack. It’s why Lewis would be a fool to leave them, only team I can see him returning to is McLaren as a bit of a swan song, sure he might be tempted by Ferrari but unless things change for the better throughout the entire team (they probably still have a terrific blame culture in place, just not as bad as previous years) why would anyone actually willingly leave the Mercedes juggernaut?

What’s slightly annoying about Bottas is that he clearly has the pace, just not for a full season? He started off very well in 2019 but then tailed off meaning the WDC fight was very quickly over barring Hamilton not finishing a few races on the bounce.

Mercedes seem to think Ferrari are running their power units significantly down on their rivals. I don't see any real picture at this point. Merc and Red Bull seem strong, Ferrari I would say seem to be hiding their pace.

If the picture Binotto paints is true, he'll be sacked by Spain.

I doubt any of the top 3 have turned their engines up to the max yet, and Ferrari are still trailing massively. Granted their best lap time was on the soft as opposed to Mercedes running the ultra soft but they were still 2.4 seconds adrift. I just don’t see Mercedes doing what Ferrari did last year, looking on form till we get to Australia then being nowhere.

I know times mean nothing in the grand scheme but I’m starved for F1 action so will happily talk about testing times even though they’re largely irrelevant!
