It really is amazing the difference classic tracks make to wanting to play a f1 game. The modern ones are dull as gooseberry fool to play in f12020.

Some of them really are terrible, Sochi and Vietnam were by far the worst of the 2020 tracks (i'm not a fan of Austin either, even though quite a lot of people like it), yet in comparison, the updated track at Zandvoort is fantastic.

Looking forward to the revised versions of Barcelona and Melbourne too which should improve their flow, it's just a shame Silverstone can't return to their Abbey/Bridge/Priory layout too.

Totally depends on the track listing for 2021, and if it runs well on PS4. I've got good value out of 2020, but want to lock down some of these exotic tracks that won't appear in games again for a long long time.

One thing I’m hoping with EA acquiring Codemasters is that the classic tracks/cars can only grow as they might be more willing to pay the fee to scan and licence a classic track for use whereas Codemasters weren't.

Who am I kidding, this is EA I’m talking about.

Another positive of EA taking over is I think it makes VR more likely, although I doubt it for 2021. I've been having quite a bit of fun with 2019 on Game Pass and will probably make 2021 one of those rare Day 1 purchases. Is it a bit weird they've not lined the release of the game closer to the start of the season? I remember the late 360/PS3 era they'd come out at the end of the year.

There is a bit of a lack of imagination around F1 releases, which I don't expect to change when EA take over. I know there will be licencing issues, but that can be got around, why don't they do twice annual releases. Have F1 2021 come out in the summer, then F1 1981 come out in winter or as a DLC or something.

F1 as a licence is pretty unique as a sport in that you can really tap into that historic/retro market and make something that feels different but also appeals to the same fans.

F1 is also in the position (games wise) where they could make a game last 2 years, say F1 2021 launches this summer, April or may 2022 they could release F1 2022 DLC, new skins for the cars, drivers updated, car performance updated etc. The cars don’t change massively season to season outside of major rule changes (so F1 2022 would be a brand new game regardless with it being a major change) and this would give them more time to focus on each new game to make it feel like more of an upgrade. Plus it’d keep the online populated for longer (as while I don’t play it, doesn’t it drop off quite quickly?), as well as bringing in a nice chunk of change for them the following year.

Obviously it’s never happened before (as far as I’m aware anyway) and will stand no chance of happening now but it’s nice to dream

I remember thinking that with Grand Prix 2 and 3 back in the day. The yearly updates should be DLC for the most part, but like with the FIFA games it just ain't gonna happen I suppose. FIFA is even worse in some respects as only the players and kit colours change year to year. The mechanics of the game change very little. At least in F1 I guess they can claim they have to alter the engine a little to take into account handling changes on the cars!

One thing I'd love to see above all else in a modern F1 (besides the obvious VR support) is an in-game lap for lap replay of the GP that's just gone, thst you could take part in. Of course, you'd change the outcome of the race just by taking part, so maybe you'd need to be a ghost car or something, but how great would it be to sit behind Hamilton and Verstappen in the previous race and see if you could get past the pair of them for the win?

One feature which used to be neat on the old Psygnosis F1 games, was the F1TV mode, in which you could set up a custom grid and have all 20 AI cars race each other.

It allowed me to run an F1 forum game back on ONM, in which members would sign up to the various race seats and so would battle it out on track to become an ONM F1 champion.

Worked really well too, so much so it ran for over 30 seasons.

Course it’s never going to happen  I just worry F1 will end up with an F1 version of FIFA Ultimate Team :dread: That’ll be EA’s reasoning for not having yearly, DLC updates for FIFA games even if they don’t outwardly say so.

Now that would be a nice addition! As would VR but I’ve never used VR but imagine racing games are probably the best use for it currently.

One thing I always hope for is really simple, a grid editor so you could replicate the real grid from a race, create your own scenario kind of thing, set up a championship race from years gone by and see if a driver could still finish in the position they needed to win the championship etc.

You're sat in the car, it's amazing. 1:1 scale.

If they ever bring a VR headset out that can be used with the Series X I’ll definitely be getting one. They’ve not announced anything yet but when Sony have their own VR headset and even Nintendo have dabbled with it on the Switch, you have to think it’s on Microsoft’s radar for the Series X/S.

They need to bring it the the F1 games first mind but still.
