Is shiny chaining a thing in other games then? I just assumed the chain thing was only in Let's Go?

In the Gen 7 games, shiny odds dramatically increase through the SOS thing, where wild Pokemon call for help.

An SOS Battle is a battle in which a wild Pokémon calls for help from allies. Wild Pokémon gain this ability after you have cleared Ilima’s trial. Defeating multiple allies in a row is called chaining, and making long chains increases the chance of a called ally being Shiny.

A chain length of 70 to 255 gives you a 1 in 1,024 chance of encountering a Shiny Pokémon. If you have obtained the Shiny Charm, the chance becomes 1 in 683. After a chain of 255, the increased chance goes back to 0

With the right set up, you can fly through encounters so quickly, and I much prefer this to egg hatching. False swipe the original Pokemon, use an adrenaline orb (bought from pokemarts, and just needs needs to be used once), and the original Pokemon will call for help nearly every turn. If you've got some high level pokemon you can just one hit KO every ally.

Shiny Charm obtained in both Sword and Shield! Will use on game to just grab all the Legendary pokemon, then one to just shiny hunt the Legends in Dynamax Adventures.

I'm surprised I'm not burnt out yet, as now the last 5 games I've completed are Pokemon Crystal, Pokemon Sun, Pokemon Let's Go Pikachu, Pokemon Sword and now Pokemon Shield.

I’m much the same, could easily be playing at least one Pokémon game all the time, I just find it a very addictive series. I’ve actually stopped myself from doing another run of Sword and Shield (already done them both twice), I really enjoyed them though.

I didn't know there was a shiny charm in let's go until the other day, so need to go get all the missing pokemon to fill my dex. I did manage to get to shiny weeklies. I wanted bulbasuars but the streaks were 2 and 6 so I didn't mind starting again.

There's an event on at the moment where you've a higher chance of catching a shiny Omanyte from a Max Raid battle than usual.

Oh awesome I'll need to check that out! I assume it's a weekend thing? Usually is!

It’s kind of easy to farm too. One person can host, then after the raid quit their game without saving (it auto saves if after the rewards screen) and then just restart the game and launch the raid again.

Just caught a shiny Formantis on the Isle of Armour! Don't think I can call it full odds as I have the shiny charm, but I've been avoiding pretty much everything non Chansey pokemon as I run around looking for Max Mushrooms (Chansey's give lovely XP!), so was quite surprised that one of the few that ran into me ends up being a shiny! Definitely not one I'd have gone after purposefully but won't say no.

Haha congrats! Funnily enough, Formantis is one I want to shiny hunt eventually!

Nothing beats an out of the blue shiny!

I'm fully into the shiny hunting everywhere now. SOS chaining for a female Salandit in Sun, trying the Magikarp swap thing with Masuda Method breeding in Ultra Moon to get a Froakie/Greninja and then just grinding Dynamax Adventures to see what I get in Sword. I've even bought extra copies of Alpha Sapphire and Ultra Sun to have just in case I ever want to do soft reset shiny hunting for legends (love that we can just create new profiles on Switch to do new playthroughs). I know people say Dynamax Adventures are the easiest way, but with odds of 1/100, and roughly 15 minutes per run, you're looking at 25 hours if the odds are right. The only issue with relying on the old games is how long will Nintendo keep Pokemon Bank up, as without it everything prior to Gen 8 is cut off.

Haha that's proper dedication! It's crazy how cheap Sun and Moon currently are CEX they're like £12/£13, where as ORAS and USUM are still up in the £40/£50 range! I'd like to get the opposite copies to the ones I currently have, but I don't fancy spending that kind of dough!

I managed to get AS and US for £30 each on Ebay. Still sure that's more than I paid for my new copies of OR and UM new, as I remember waiting for them to hit £25 before buying. Not bad considering some of the prices old Pokemon games go for though.

Speaking of dedication (or maybe it's madness), I've seen people on Reddit that look like they are hooking 4 Switches up to one controller to play 4 games at once when breeding. They fly to the daycare to make sure all 4 games are in the same spot and then as long as all 4 hunted Pokemon are in the same steps to hatch bracket, you're good.

£30 each is pretty good actually!

4 up to 1 controller?! Didn't even think that was doable! The things some people do to hatch shiny Mon! :slol:

I wonder what shiny hunting mechanics we'll get in BDSP? Apart from the usual ones I'm assuming they'll add a "gimick" one like we've had with Ultra Wormholes, Let's Go Catch Combo and currently Dynamax Adventures.

I’m not sure what idea they could add into this which would have improved shiny odds unless they bring back the distortion world from Platinum? Obviously it’d need expanding upon as I don’t think there was much to do in it in Platinum, but I never played it so could be wrong. Obviously there would be a shiny charm for a completed dex. One thing that would be neat is if they added some kind of New Game + to the series, so for example on a new game you could keep at most 6, level 5 (and under) Pokémon to start your game with, as well as the capture/shiny charm if you’ve got them in your game already. Might make people who enjoy shiny hunting starting a fresh game to reset for a Shiny starter, box legendary etc as you have the boosted odds from the charms.

While I’m not going to go back and get the opposite version from previous pairs of games, from Sword and Shield I’ll probably just get both from now on anyway, just for the easier dex completion. Got the double pack ordered for BDSP.

I wow I love that idea Robbo! I suppose we can cross everything and hope they include something like that into BDSP!

Funnily enough I just picked up Sword from Argos for £39.99, I've had Shield since release but always wanted the second game and didn't think to order the double pack, bare in mind the game often goes for £35+ second hand I think £40 is quite acceptable!

I too have ordered the BDSP double pack, Dex completion is easier, plus I tend to like one game for completion and shiny hunting, then the other I don't mind resetting my save for play through challenges etc! :D

Not a chance will they implement a NG+ into Pokémon but I can dream

That’s exactly what I did with Sword and Shield, played Shield first as my main/complete save and Sword has been used for reruns, solo runs etc. Going to do a monotype on one of BDSP as I’ve not done one for a while. Pokémon games don’t drop much price wise either so you’re not really losing much either, if you want both copies that is.

Haha we can dream! :slol:

Oh nice! Funnily enough I did a Mono run through in Let's Go Eevee last year, I did it with Bug types, really enjoyed it!

When I pick up Sword later, I'm tempted to do either a mono type, mono species, a nuzlock, an egg run where I use what ever Pokémon I get from random eggs, or finally I might do a wonder trade run.

I'm not sure if I'll pick up the expansion pass yet for this copy, I know I have some Nintendo points built up I can use, and perhaps if I find a good deal on a Nintendo store currency I might buy it that way.

Personally I just don’t find Nuzlockes too much fun, just find I grind more levels out to try and stop any Pokémon fainting and needing to train more up. Solo/mono runs are much more my type of thing in Pokémon. I got the expansion for Sword just so I could do the Dynamax Adventure bit again

Yea I've always found Nuzlockes a bit of a pain and I've never finished one as a result, I would like to just to say I've done it!

I'm with you on mono runs though, I find those really interesting! I want to try a solo species playthrough too, something like an Eeveelution run (thanks Pedz for the inspiration!).

I'm tempted to start a new thread, dedicated to people's Pokémon playthrough challenges, where you can post updates on how a run is going... Would that be something you're interested in Robbo? :simper:
