Awesome and congrats! Ponyta is such an awesome shiny, I look forward to hearing how it goes!

Also, I hopped into a random D-Adventure (wayhey!) this morning and it turned out to be Ho-Oh, only one of my favourite legendaries.. then this happened at the end! :slol:

Image

The Fire Turkey shined for me! Also happens to be one of my favourite shinies too! :D

Shiny Ho-Oh is great! I find a lot of the legendary Pokémon look worse as a shiny than if they were normal, Rayquazza looks neat though.

I have been quite lucky though with shiny Pokémon, the one I really want (Hoothoot/Noctowl) has never appeared :( Dynamax adventures are a good way to get them, 1/300 without the shiny charm and 1/100 with! Shiny Pokémon appear if you’re on or offline as well, just online/playing with others gives you access to the version exclusive legendary Pokémon (why it’s still a thing I don’t know past the cover Pokémon).

Yea there are definitely some disappointing legendary shinies! Ho-Oh and Rayquazza are up there with the best though! It's funny how much have got such awesome variants, and others feel so lazily thought out!

Are you specifically hunting for Hoothoot at the moment? I hope you get them soon! :simper:

Not particularly, back playing Moon (followed by Ultra Moon) at the moment I just think Noctowl had a really nice shiny variant to be honest! Plus Ash had a shiny Noctowl back when he was in Johto.

You should be able to SOS chain Hoot Hoot in Moon and Ultra Moon, although it's one of those annoying ones that only appear at night, which I think means only during the day for RL time if you're playing Moon. I still don't have a Dusk form Lycanroc as in Ultra Moon it has to evolve between 5 and 6am :slol:

Have to set your alarm

I’m not sure if this is common but I loathe the SOS chaining in SM/USUM, I suppose if you’re looking for a shiny or rarer Pokémon it works (it really does a little too well at times, I caught a Kommo-o just when I was trying to catch the first stage of that line) but when I was first playing through Moon and just wanted to catch Pokémon only for a Pokémon to constantly get help sent it’s way got tiring quite quickly to me.

Oh god yea I remember wanting a Dusk form Lycanroc on Shield, I just changed the time on the console! :D

I've never actually tried S.O.S to shiny hunt before, I know it's very popular, does it only work well if you have the shiny charm?

Another ways I know is chain fishing in Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire which as far as I'm aware, is quite broken.

The other way is X and Y friend safaris which I've also never tried and is very much dependant on who you have on your 3DS friends list. I have no idea how it works either!

I hated it when playing through the games, but it’s a very good shiny method for doing when you’re also watching TV or something. I think the odds are 1 in 1024 without the charm after the 70th sos call, but if you have a high level
Pokemon and can do one hit KOs you can get through 4-6 every minute. You can either remember to KO the original one after a while as it will run out of PP, or you can use certain Pokemon to give it a Berry and the harvest ability at the start so it never runs out.

I’d pick doing that over hatching 500+ eggs any day!

I got two shiny clamperl without the charm when doing it to try and catching huntail and gorbyss. I didn’t even know it was a method to reduce odds at the time so was actually frustrated I’d had two show up and no huntail or gorbyss.

Also, Let’s Go is kind of insane. I decided to go for Squirtle instead of Ponyta as now I’m considering jumping into Sword and I didn’t want to sort of be ‘stuck’ not being able to close Let’s Go during a long chain, and since those starters are so hard to get a chain started in the first place I thought I’d aim to get them out of the way now.

Started a Psyduck chain to try and get the first Squirtle to appear, and only 3 Psyduck in, a shiny Pidgey pops up. Then, 3 Squirtle into that chain, a shiny Seel shows up. I’d not even started a new chain when a shiny Slowpoke pops up. This is all in less than an hour! I’ve ignored shinies before when I’m in the 100+ combo range but I’ll happily give up a combo of 3, even for a Pidgey

Oh that cool, I plan to playthrough Moon or Ultra Sun soon, so I may give the SoS method a go! That's a point, I haven't tried the Ultra Wormhole method either! Have you tried?

Haha that's insane shiny luck even for Let's Go! Yea I'm in two minds, either MM method a Squirtle in Shield for a shiny... Or attempt to chain it in Let's Go and transfer it over!

Do you have a particular favourite shiny Pokemon?

I pretty much got Ultra Moon just for the Legendary Pokemon in the Ultra Wormholes as even though I've played through every gen, there were still some I was missing as they were in the version of the game I didn't buy. Once you've got all the Legendaries, the wormholes they were in start to give shinies instead and the rates are so high, I don't know if I'd even consider it shiny hunting! And there's only about 20 Pokemon you can get through them, none of which I really was interested in as a shiny.

I don't know if I have a favourite but I really like a couple of white ones such as Litten/Torracat (I would never let this evolve to Incineroar if I got one ), and Salazzle, but that would be such a hard one to hunt considering how rare the females are compared to males. I think all 3 Lycanroc forms look amazing as shinies too. Huh, never realised how much I favoured Gen 7!

I never legitimately encountered a Shiny until gen 6. First time I went out of my way to actually breed one was for Honedge which took roughly around 200 or so eggs with Masuda Method. I tried to shoot for a Shiny Falinks in SWSH but gave up around 500 hatches >,> Unless a future pokemon game has Mon I really love the look and design of, I don't think I'm going through that ever again lol.

So getting the initial chain of 10 for any of the Kanto starters is a real chore in Let's Go. It takes ages. Once you're on 11, they show up constantly. I was running if two balls failed, as I didn't want to risk blowing the chain... and Squirtle just ran from me after one ball. Ugh! Still much less time spent than other shiny methods but oh boy doing that 1-10 all over again sucks.

I don't think I've ever encountered a shiny 'mon in any game since Blue but even that wouldn't top the level 112 Goldbat which I failed to catch in Blue.

An over 100 Pokemon! Over 100! Just imagine the power.

I read somewhere it's a glitch though and apparently if you catch one it just reverts to level 100. Still wish I caught it though.

Oh that's cool! So once you've caught a legendary, am I right in saying it won't turn up again? So by the end you can have just 1 or every one? Also are there inhanced shiny odds for Legendaries in Ultra Wormholes?

Kinda sucks you only have a selection of 20 Mon after that to potentially be shiny, I suppose if the odds are so high then it would flood the games with too many shinies!

Haha MM is a real slog at times! I still want to obtain a shiny through that method, once I've prepared myself mentally for it! :slol:

The only time I tried was to get a shiny Alolan Vulpix in Shield, I got to 850 eggs then stopped, frustration has kicked in and I wasn't enjoying it any more. I think I just need one to shine early for me and I'll have faith that it will work! :simper:

Haha oh yea it sucks real bad! Do you use the double ball method to catch? Where you use both Joycons to throw 2 balls at a Pokémon at the same time? The catch rate raises quite a bit but you burn through balls much faster! It's really handy for Pokémon a pain in the catch.

Haha oh I forgot about that glitch! Gosh that takes me back to the days, I remember my friend telling me about that, and the missingno glitch in the game, and the whole "Mew under the truck" rumor. We were so excited to see if we could find these things!

You can imagine our disappointed at the Mew one!(Especially as I was so confident it would work!) But I do remember coming across lvl 100+ Pokémon, then the disappointment of finding out they revert back to 100 once caught!

Yeah, there is a set list of legendaries available, some are version exclusive, and some you can only get by having two others in your party (like Kyurem needing you to have Reshiram and Zekrom). Once each one is caught, it won't appear again, although I think you can knock them out and they will still pop up again. Unfortunately they are just the standard shiny odds, although the shiny charm does help if you have it. You can change if you ride Solgaleo or Lunala, and most people find Solgaleo easier. There's no difference at all in the mechanics, but Solgaleo takes up a bit less screen space and makes it easier to see. You can also change the controls from motion to regular after you've done it once and I strongly recommend that!

As for Let's Go, I'm playing on Switch Lite so don't think I can do the double catch method. I do have a Pokeball Plus but I've tried shaking it and it just seems to then give me two inputs to pick from, but not a second player. I found a spot with much lower level Squirtle and I've got my combo back up now, so will stop catching and just wait for the shiny. Thank god the battery barely drains in sleep mode.

A while back I remember the pokemon community flipping out over "new" variations of shiny pokemon and wasn't sure if it ever was solved or not? Something about how the shapes of the sparkles are different. Like, c'mon GF lol >,>

I would actually love it if we got unique designs attributed to Shiny Mon. Would make them slightly more special. I swear they barely even try with some Shiny colours, like what is even the point.

In regards to the Dynamax Adventures, I was going to try and explain them, but Serebii can do it much better!

https://www.serebii.net/swordshield/dynamaxadventures.shtml

This has become a very viable way of shiny hunting, I think people will be doing it for a while, so I wouldn't worry about missing out. You can play them solo too, the NPC fills in the gaps and are not bad to work with, they've made better decisions than some randoms I've played with before!

EDIT: There's no rotation, all Legendaries are available although some are exclusive to certain games, there aren't many though and teaming up with someone who has the other games gives you access.

When are you free for a few hours of raiding?

AHH awesome thanks for the info, I'll definitely check out some Ultra Wormholes and see if I get any luck! Need to reply through Ultra Sun actually, so could be a good incentive!

AHH that's fair enough maybe it's slightly different on the Lite in that case, either way glad you've found lower level Squirtles, they can be a pain to catch! Keep us posted! :D

Yea so introduced in Sword and Shield they introduced a different shiny variant called the "Square Shiny". Basically the only difference is the animation when I shines. So you have the standard yellow stars that bling, then you have these white square / diamond shaped that will bling out instead.

Originally this Square variant was meant to be extremely rare, so to add some extra value to a shiny that had this animation, but it turns out they messed up the odds on certain shiny hunting methods, so if you get a shiny through the KO method, 90% of the time it will be the Square Shiny so it's just considered a cool little extra feature rather than something of value.

There are something called "Marks" thought which Pokémon can sometimes have on them, this changes the text when you send out a Pokémon in battle, you get marks by catching Pokémon in certain situations, sometimes it's the time of days other times it's the weather, there's a few occasions that can cause a Pokémon to have a mark, some are you easier to obtain than others but none are guaranteed to be on a Pokémon. So if you catch a shiny with a specific mark on it, then that's very rare indeed!

Got Squirtle! Because they're a rare spawn, you only get one on screen at a time and I went through a few hundred of them at least, but I think I could have been getting shinies spawning in the air. I saw a shiny pidgey up there for sure, but I ignored a lot of the Charizard and Dragonite shadows without even checking them.

I kind of want to jump into Gen 8, but I think I'll go for Charmander first as those starter hunts can easily take a few days, and you can't switch to another game without breaking the chain. Bulbasaur feels like it will be a little easier due to just how many pokemon spawn in Veridian forest.

Edit: Shiny Charmander after a chain of 33 and I dicked about with a premier ball and it escaped.

Congrats! I love Squirtle and always been a fan of Shiny Blastoise! Haha ignoring those shines flying by, especially a Dragonite takes some conviction!

Awwww no sorry to hear about the escape! It's absolutely soul destroying! Are you planning to go for it again?

Yea Bulbasaur are quite common there, should have much problem with them popping up, you'll have to ignore loads of shiny bugs and Pikachu though!
