Welcome to the GRcade UEFA Euro 2024 thread!

Welcome one and all to the thread for the 17th edition of the UEFA European Championship, this time hosted in Germany. This will be the first time that a reunified Germany has served as a solo host nation, and will also be the first time the competition is held in what was formerly East Germany, with Leipzig being one of the host cities.

We still don't know the last few teams to quality as the play-offs aren't until March 2024, but for now we'll have UK representation from both England and Scotland. Good luck to Wales in the play-offs :toot:

Big game tonight for the Welsh football fans of the forum - beat Poland in the play-off final and they're into the Euros!

Got tickets for the game tonight, last time we played Poland their fans were booing our anthem and throwing flares into the family stand :dread: Should be a good atmosphere in there

Nice, Germany should be brilliant for a tournament! Been looking forward to this one since France in 2016 (2020 being a stupid format with no proper host), but my wife's due date is in May so can't see me making it

To be fair it wouldn't have been very Welsh to win a penalty shootout for qualification. Maybe next time.

Don't like Wales, so was pleased to see them go out. Poland, Ukraine, and Georgia are decent or interesting teams to have in there.

At this point I have zero optimism about England. Plenty of good players and attacking options, but with Gareth in charge it'll be the usual - try and bore everyone (including the fans) into submission, pick his favourite-but-out-of-form players, play overly negative and defensive football, rely primarily on the defence which is our weak area, and then inevitably give away late goals and end up losing. I wish he'd set us up to play to our strengths, and to set out to win a game, rather than trying to avoid losing.

Looking forward to the tournament, but hoping it's Southgate's last.

The problem is, with England's defence being so poor these days, I would fear them getting absolute drubbings at the Euros if he set the team up to be more attacking than it is. Even now, I almost have to hide behind a cushion whenever they lose possession, since you just know the other team will get to our penalty area within a few seconds and a few passes.

They always seem to either back off too much, or the left/right defenders misjudge the situation and stay too far up. And on top of that, our defenders and goalkeeper always have the capacity for silly errors. Any new manager coming in is going to face the same major problem, England are so vulnerable at the back and all the top teams know it.

Not to depress England fans or anything, but despite a lot of pre-tournament hot air about offensive symbols on the England shirt, the Germans have quietly and efficiently blown everyone else away...

Germany fans banned from buying number 44 kits over Nazi symbolism

Adidas has banned football fans from buying German football kits customised with the number 44, after media raised its resemblance to the symbol used by World War Two-era Nazi SS units.

"We will block personalisation of the jerseys," an Adidas spokesman said.

I'd like an underdog team to win this.
Austria winning the group and going on to win the title would be pretty good.
