Welcome to the Official GRCade iPhone Thread

What is the iPhone?

The iPhone is a line of Internet- and multimedia-enabled smartphones marketed by Apple Inc. The first iPhone was unveiled by Steve Jobs, then CEO of Apple, on January 9, 2007, and released on June 29, 2007. The 5th generation iPhone, the iPhone 4S, was announced on October 4, 2011, and released 10 days later.

An iPhone can function as a video camera (video recording was not a standard feature until the iPhone 3GS was released), a camera phone, a portable media player, and an Internet client with email and web browsing capabilities, can send texts and receive visual voicemail, and has both Wi-Fi and 3G connectivity. The user interface is built around the device's multi-touch screen, including a virtual keyboard rather than a physical one.

Third-party as well as Apple application software is available from the App Store, which launched in mid-2008 and now has over 500,000 "apps" approved by Apple. These apps have diverse functions, including games, reference, GPS navigation, social networking, security and advertising for television shows, films, and celebrities.

There are five generations of iPhone models, each accompanied by one of the five major releases of iOS (formerly iPhone OS). The original iPhone was a GSM phone, and established design precedents, such as screen size and button placement, that have persisted through all models. The iPhone 3G added 3G cellular network capabilities and A-GPS location. The iPhone 3GS added a compass, faster processor, and higher resolution camera, including video recording at 480p.

The iPhone 4 has a rear-facing camera (720p video) and a front facing camera (at a lower resolution) for FaceTime video calling and for use in other apps like Skype. The iPhone 4 featured a higher-resolution 960x640 display; it was released on June 24, 2010. In the U.S., AT&T was the only authorized carrier until February 10, 2011, when a CDMA version of the iPhone 4 launched for Verizon. On October 4, 2011, Apple announced the iPhone 4S.

The iPhone 4S added a higher resolution camera (8 megapixel) with 1080p video recording, face detection, and video stabilization, a faster, dual core processor, support for both GSM/UMTS and CDMA on one chip, GLONASS support and a natural language voice control system called Siri. It is available in 16 GB and 32 GB, as well as a new 64 GB capacity.

What is Siri?

Image

Siri is an intelligent software assistant and knowledge navigator functioning as a personal assistant application for iOS. The application uses a natural language user interface to answer questions, make recommendations, and perform actions by delegating requests to a set of web services. Apple claims that the software adapts to the user's individual preferences over time and personalizes results, as well as accomplishing tasks such as finding recommendations for nearby restaurants, or getting directions.

Siri was originally introduced as an iOS application available in the App Store. Siri was acquired by Apple Inc. on April 28, 2010. Siri had announced that their software would be available for BlackBerry and for Android-powered phones, but all development efforts for non-Apple platforms were cancelled after Apple's purchase.

Siri is now an integrated part of iOS 5, and available only on the iPhone 4S, launched on October 4, 2011. Despite this, hackers were able to adapt Siri in previous iPhones. On November 8, 2011, Apple publicly announced that it had no plans to support Siri on any of its older devices.

How do I jailbreak?

iPhone 3gs, iPhone 4, iPod & iPad 1: Download Redsnow (https://sites.google.com/a/iphone-dev.com/files/home/redsn0w_win_0.9.10b2.zip) and follow the onscreen instructions, once done the Cydia app should be installed on your phones homescreen.

iPhone 4s & iPad 2: Download Absinthe (http://cache.greenpois0n.com/dl/absinthe-win-0.2.zip) again follow the onscreen instructions and voila! Cydia is finally available on an A5 device!

(Note: Jailbreaking (at the moment) is still legal and will not affect your devices warranty. If your phone needs repairing just restore to the official Apple OS and everything will be fine. Also GRCade does not condone the use of jailbreaking for illegal downloads of apps, therefore I will not provide links to Cydia repos and App download websites)

GRCade app recommendations

To be added soon!

The Simplify Media app. It lets you stream your music library. The Last.fm app is alright too.

Adding album art to itunes manually is easy enough. First do a google image search for the album cover. Then in itunes select all the tracks in the album. Then right click and select get info, then drag the downloaded image onto the white square labelled album artwork.

We should migrate GRcade to Flarum. :toot:

If you are a lazy bastard like me then the Remote app is brilliant. It lets you use your Touch as a remote control for iTunes.

If this thread is mainly about the Apps, you ought to make it a combined iPhone / iPod Touch thread.

Tetris clone "Tris" is to be taken off the App store, because of threatened legal action by the Tetris Company. But not until tomorrow, giving everybody the chance to download it before it disappears. (It's a freebie, btw.) Go get it now!

For a great little puzzle game, type 'Subway' into the search box in the Apps Store. It's a really, genuinely good puzzler that can be downloaded for free, which gives you like 10 puzzles or for £1.79 which give you 60 odd. Very simple, very challenging, very addictive.

I also like the Shakespeare app, gives me a chance to read some Hamlet on long train journeys when I'm bored.

Yeah, Subway's good. Only played the free Lite version, but may well buy the full game.

I'll probably download Shakespeare too, but I heard it suffers from (understandable) slowdown when scrolling through the long files.

TanZen is another simple puzzle game (free Lite version available), and so is Cubicman. I've also downloaded Frotz, which lets you play all the classic text adventures (including Zork), but haven't tried it yet.

I haven't actually tried that one yet, downloaded it just now, but reviews on iTunes are good.

Good idea for a thread; I was overwhelmed by the amount of Apps available in the store just after it launched. Does anyone know if there is a Flash application for use with the browser or even a brand new standalone broswer like Firefox that will have Flash pre-installed?

Doubt it. I've just got the new 3G 16gb and I'm convinced it's deliberately borked. My reasoning is that it's so far ahead of the competition that the only way they can improve it is by introducing fixes of the things they've deliberately borked so far. The version that I've got fixed lack of 3G and improved operation speed so that it's perfectly usable.

Things they deliberately borked and will fix with later versions, forcing users to upgrade;

Poor Camera
Lack of Video Capture
No Flash in Safari
Can't create user-made ringtones. Which surely is ridiculously easy considering there is a sodding iPod there.
No Bluetooth data transer

And that's things I'm annoyed with off the top of my head. Still, I don't give a gooseberry fool about camera and all that, just Flash and Bluetooth would be nice.

You appear to be confusing the iPod Touch with the iPhone. We are talking about the former, you are talking about the latter.
