It was extremely obvious that after the show was extended past 3 seasons (which was it's original predicted running time) the writers had nowhere to go and no way to explain everything. I'm pretty convinced the original ending would have been the Dharma reveal and that was it, with the monster being some sort of experiment gone wrong. This would have been far more satisfying than the convoluted magic and mysticism gooseberry fool they ended with.

What was wrong with the ending? It was just the characters meeting together one last time after they had died.

What made it worse was that at the end of season three they made the deal with ABC so that there would be exactly three more seasons and then the show would end. This meant they could plan out every episode and ensure all of the mysteries were answered and the story was wrapped up nicely.

Along comes season 4 and it is absoloutely brilliant. The writers are on the top of their game and it appears like they know exactly what they are doing. Then comes season five and it's a mess. The time travel is a silly way to wrap up the Dharma mysteries and it completely lacks the clever writing that made sason 4 so good. Season 6 is not only worse but it's so bad that it's actually insulting to anyway who has been watching the show from day one.

As a whole my biggest problem with the show is that we were consistently lied to all the way along. During season one we were told that no mystery is added unless they know the answer, and every mystery has a scientific explanation. In season 6 the answers we are given include gods that are thousands of years old, take the form of dead people, can turn into smoke at will, and have magic powers such as telekinesis. Their mission is to protect the magic light at the heart of the island even though nobody can see it (or even find the island) so it doesn't need protecting.

I loved the ending, although when I watched the finale, when they all gathered in the church I assumed they were all going to get sent back to the island.

There's 100's of ways the show could have gone after season 3 and we all have different ideas. I personally would have liked to have seen some of the mysteries surrounding Walt explained. Due to him actually ageing rapidly in real life made it difficult, but that's one of the major complaints that I have. There was so much potential lost with that story.

After watching the extras of each season, its quite obvious that the show was planned for one season only. Heck, after watching the making o f the pilot episode the cast didnt even know if the show would get picked up for a proper series at that point

So, the pilot had 'the monster' which at the time was in there to try and add layers of mystery purely to get the show signed up. The writers stated that they knew they would be on the island, there would be a 'monster' of some kind and that there would be 'a hatch' that they find. When the hatch was blown open and the season ended they DIDNT KNOW what would be inside, so the dharma initiative was made up for season two.

Season two was dharma at its high point story wise for me as it was a much more potent story telling device when you knew nothing about them. There's something so chernobyl-esque about an empty series of stations with no trace of human life. This is why season 5 was a bit naff for me (although i still love it). I don't WANT to know more about Dharma in that respect, I don't WANT to know about a guy called Phil and Horace...The Losties actually IN the initiative?! Sawyer actually senior in their ranks?!

Back to my oroiginal point (if there was one ), it was pretty much said that the show could be wrapped up at the end of the first season if it got cancelled. From that you can only guess that the island WAS originally meant to be purgetory, but when it got extended and the internet theories pretty much guessed what was going on, the writers changed the game every time things were worked out, leaving us with bloody lights at the bottom of water slides along with the smoke monster being a bloody person

That's the thing the writers didn't seem to get...when people want answers they don't necessarily want them spelled out in huge, 20ft high letters. A hint towards the correct explanation is best, with enough room to interpret the details in different ways. Dharma was something that didn't need explaining in minute detail: the idea of a mysterious organisation conducting crazy science experiments was enough. We didn't need to know who ran the camp, or who made the food.

They explained the stuff that didn't need explaining and left the stuff that did completely unanswered. What, after all, was the monster? It was never explained satisfactorily. Jack's tattoos though, let's dedicate a whole episode to them! What was the deal with Mrs Hawkings? Dunno, but let's spent 50 minutes talking about Jacob's mum! Why couldn't women have children on the island? Who cares, let's concentrate on Jacob's until-now-never-mentioned lighthouse! What actually happened when the failsafe was activated? Pssh, haven't got time for that, let's visit this crappy looking Temple!

The last series was complete misfire in my opinion, introducing loads of stuff that was completely irrelevant to the plot hooks that made the first 2 series so memorable.

Rewatching Season 6 is pretty infuriating knowing how ultimately pointless most of it is. But then you have amazing character moments like the two in Dr Lunus.

"He's the only one who'll have me" is one of the best delivered lines in the whole show
And Jack and Richard's little discussion over a stick of dynamite

My rewatch has really run out of steam now

I've just watched the one where Daniel gets shot. Its all just a bit too forced in these later ones and having watched it all back to back you realise just who good it used to be (even season 3 was brilliant on second viewing).

I'm really not looking forward to 6 considering that 90% of it was set up for LOL BET U DIDNT SEE THAT COMING LOL

S3 is massively underrated IMO. The second half of that season is incredibly strong, probably as good as Lost ever was. It certainly made up for the lacklustre first half of S3.

I always liked Season 3 but didn't like Season 2 as much. Re-watching made me realise how fantastic the first four seasons all are

I was saying this a while back, but i think the show could, and should have ended with series 4. With a little bit of re-jigging imagine how amazing it would have been having the oceanic six leave as they did with the island disappearing. It would have made the desperation of jack wanting to go back so much more powerful, plus locke having topped himself would have made more sense in the classic Lost sense. He HAD found a way back so the rest might have got back too, but something happened to him too which made him kill himself, leading to jack's despair.

Obviously it'd need a bit more of a payoff somewhere there but it would have been better than heaven

You could also argue that the entire "We never visited the island" reality is just a figment of Jack's imagination as he dies, spooled out over an entire season ala "An Occurrence at Owl Creek". After all, those doors opening coincide pretty neatly with his last breath leaving his body.

Thats what it actually is, although not just limited to his imagination. They made that place together and couldn't move on until jack 'woke up', so in the flash-sideways the realisation of what was happening when he spoke to christian spilled over into the normal world (as happened with the 'it worked' and 'we could go dutch' with Juliet and Sawyer at the hatch), so that he was lying there dying but happy because he now knew it meant something. He even laughs when he sees the plane fly overhead as he knows everyone is ok in the end.

I just thought it was the writers putting them in limbo after everyone thought it was limbo at the end of season 1.

Still a brilliant conclusion for the characters though

Been re-watching this on Netflix. Only early in Season One at the moment, looking forward to reliving to latter half of the show the most as I've only seen it the once.

I remember season 3 ending on a massive high. Really exciting

As a whole there were so many great ideas like the time travel at the university and the awareness of it. But it was the human moments of being lost, the personal stories that resonated most with me.

The only downer for me was the very last episode which contradicted the rest of series 6. Bad things had happened and I viewed the flash forwards as an escape to a different, better reality. That's what should've happened. But what were they in the end? The writers had built up the series, they wanted to give it a deserving ending so they made it about God showing us heaven after Jack dies. But what about what happens between the time Jack dies and the other people die? What happened there?
