Decided this is a day one purchase for me. I'll get it on PC as no doubt mods will become a standard.

Don't know how this managed to slip under my radar - it looks right up my street!

Still no Alpha Protocol 2 though.

This will now be exclusive to the Epic and Windows Stores for a year before hitting Steam. It's a shame since alongside Control (which now has the same timed exclusivity deal as well), this was my most anticipated game this year, but I can't be arsed to bother now.

The continuing 'it's on Epic Store so I won't buy it' thing is utterly mystifying to me (as well as being a demonstrably false movement if the recent Metro Exodus stories are accurate).

So you have to install another store besides Steam, Origin, uPlay, itch.io and the Blizzard launcher.

oh no

Buying exclusivity for a completely fresh release (i.e. a game that wasn't available elsewhere before being made available on Epic's store) is fine by me. But... I can understand people still being turned off Epic due to the whole Metro bs, and or their snooping about on people's machines for Steam data.

They straight up said that wasn't true. Similar accusations were leveled at Stream and Origin and were likewise dismissed by Valve and EA.

I'm not defending Epic here, but a little perspective goes a long way, and childish 'well I'm not buying it nyah' reactions are really counterproductive.

Does this delay the console release? Because that's the real kicker for me

Are they doing that, or do they have actual reasons for not buying from Epic?

And 'snooping' may have been the wrong term to use, but they do access Steam files because reasons/EULA.

Possibly...but in any game of developer/publisher top trumps Valve comes off much, much worse. There's a reason the CEO of Epic was able to stand up at GDC yesterday and, talking about the Epic Store, say "We're not in the porn business."* Valve's designed lack of moderation on steam is hurting people, and provides a space for hate speech and radicalisation.

I'd genuinely like to hear any reasons people don't want to buy from Epic on the same level as that.

*Important caveat: I have no problem at all with porn games in general, but some of the gooseberry fool on Steam is heinous.

Ripping off artists and not compensating them for their work because US law says you cannot copyright dance moves?

Valve's involvement in this isn't the story and questioning Epic does not mean Valve are getting a pass on their shitty behaviour.

How about exploiting shitty business practices which hurt people for their own greed? Too much of a stretch? Okay, how about ripping off artists and not compensating them for their work because the law says you cannot copyright dance moves?

Valve's involvement in this isn't the story and questioning Epic does not mean Valve are getting a pass on their shitty behaviour.

Again, I'm not defending Epic. Spoiler: they're a corporation. Corporations are bad. However they have not, as far as I know, had to be pushed into action by bad PR to remove a game called "Rape Day" from their store.

IP abuse is bad. Furthering and abetting the normalisation of rape is, you know...worse.

Epic exclusives are, as far as I'm concerned, a necessary evil in providing an alternative to Steam who have proven time and again that their monopoly was simply one of timing rather than quality of service.

You're essentially saying Epic can't be called out against Steam because they haven't done anything as bad as X. That's silly.

I'm saying that, so far, Epic's behaviour has been nowhere near as bad as Valve's. I'm saying that if someone's reaction to a game being announced as an Epic exclusive is "Urgh" they should examine why they think that.

Epic have shown shittiness towards creators, black creators especially, and deserve to be called out for it. Valve have allowed hate speech and abuse to flourish on their system which, until recently, amounted to a monopoly.

Valve shouldn't be the default just because there were there first.

And I'm saying that shouldn't come in to a discussion about how Epic are behaving.

Its an annoyance for me, having to have a seperate launcher/store, but apart from that i cant get too emotional about this being on epic. I cant imagine getting that annoyed that i would be willing to miss out on a game i wanted.

As much as i love steam and my steam library, i have become fairly disillusioned with valve and their behaviour over recent years.

Not sure im adding any value to this thread, just my two penneth and more in response to the people who are saying they wont get the game now as a result.

It should have no bearing on the Console release, just like Metro Exodus, the release date isn't changed.

Why on earth not? Valve are an inextricable part of the equation when said equation is binary.

Epic are a shitty corporation. Valve are a shittier corporation. Instinctively reacting with disdain when you're forced to buy from the less shitty of two corporations is odd to me.

Some of those people have legitimate issues (i.e. not omg only Valve should sell games!) with Epic's behaviour.

Epic could sign up exclusives without pissing most sane people off (see Supergiant's Hades), but in a couple of instances (Metro and Phoenix) they've opted to court controversy and annoy investors/backers and people with pre-orders.

Valve will rightly get lambasted regardless.
