I started playing a supernova run but I think I may give up as my companions just die way to easily on this difficulty. Even if you equip them with the best heavy armour you can find they still seem dead set on getting themselves killed.

The other aspects of supernova don't really add much either as keeping your needs met is relatively easy and combat is not more challenging than on hard. Obsidian need to re-jig this mode by making your own survival a little more complex and making your companions a little more robust.

New Vegas hardcore mode had companions only permadeath if you yourself killed them, which worked way better. It does seem to be the biggest problem with supernova difficulty (best approach is probably to not take any of them out with you whenever possible and stealth through when it isn't)

Got back to this after a few days break since last week, mainly dealing with stuff on Byzantium where I must say I am hugely enjoying taking a non-lethal stealth based approach to everything. Snooping around the labs where the Board is trying to perfect the freezing and reviving process as part of their "shutter the colony" in the face of the food crisis has been great, even if some of the design elements of the stealth approach could be much more refined.

Genuinely felt sad when I stole all of the chemicals and the people in the tanks violently convulsed before going silent, poor bastards. Figured that the Board had no clue what they were doing, which seemed fair enough given all of the reports around the lab, and those guys were going to die either way - felt like it was more valuable to get the chemicals to Phineas who actually stands a chance of knowing what to do with them

Also I spared Chartrand and told her to try and team up with Phineas. The food crisis is real and she seemed genuine about trying to develop a solution. I'd rather back her than the board in terms of finding a real solution, particularly after the "early retirement" revelations :dread:

I snuck through that lab only to massacre everyone for revenge on the way out after feeling bad about sacrificing the colonists.

Interesting choices - I only took the maximum chemicals I could without killing anyone, and while I spared Chartrand I didn't tell her to work with Phineas, I just let her continue on as she was. I thought it better not to risk Phineas and having multiple separate teams working on things sounded sensible.

You weren't convinced it was an alien invasion then? :P

The main problem with stealth using an ID cartridge is that you don't have time to explore. On my murder-everyone play through I found several terminal logs to read that I didn't first time round.

How do the ID cartridges work by the way? I think I've picked up one or two now after the game mentioned about the device. Haven't had time to play this game any more after the first few days  :fp:

Is it an item in my inventory I use from there? Or can it only be activated in certain areas/story etc?

Provided you picked up the holographic device (it'll be sitting on the table in your room on the ship if not), when you enter a restricted area it will automatically activate if you have a relevant ID cartridge. Restricted areas are usually bordered with a holographic projection saying "RESTRICTED" so they are hard to miss.

Oh okay that explains it. I picked that up off my desk before landing at the first space port and saw the restricted wall area but I couldn't figure out how to activate the disguise... I should have just walked through :fp: is there any visible way to tell if you have the ID cartridge for that area? I think I saw the list of ID cartridges in my inventory somewhere but I wondered if the restricted wall sign would change if you had the right one on your person?

Not sure as I never had that problem, but the ID cartridges are all in quest items in your inventory so you can check which ones you have there.

If you have the ID cartridge for an area the warning won't be displayed at the bottom of the screen and I believe the floating "RESTRICTED ACCESS" signs that sit on the boundary to the area will be faded as well?

Yeah I like the ID system but it does limit exploration within an area, it would have been nice if it was user activated so that I could try sneaking through somewhere and only start the ID countdown at a time of my choosing rather than as soon as I entered. It's also quite spammable in that you can just walk out and back in to a restricted area to reset the timer with no consequence.

I was initially going to only take the minimal chemicals but all the reports I read in the lab and overhearing the conversations by the scientists it was clear that the people the board had frozen were basically guaranteed to die on revival anyway so it didn't feel like the wrong thing to do.

With Chartrand I was very conflicted, I was initially pretty set on killing her for the stupidity of experimenting on her colleagues but actually talking to her revealed her to be pretty genuine about her desires to help people - even if her methods were both extreme and scientifically flawed. That's why I figured sending her to Phineas might be a good idea - they may still fail or make some dodgy decisions on the way but at the same time might actually be able to achieve some success!

Parvati really is a great character, it's a little bit of a shame that she is introduced immediately before heading out into the wilderness and killing lots of people, as I suspect most people will take her along because of it and it's quite at odds with her persona.

I was thinking on some possible roleplayed playthroughs, and hit on "board-aligned double agent" - with the objective of taking out the rival factions with minimum casualties. Spoilers for each faction:

- Edgewater
Cut off power to the deserters and bring them back under Reed Tobson's control

- Phineas
Turn him over to the board and place the tracker on his computer

- MSI/Iconoclasts
Help Zora to usurp Graham, persuade the two sides to try and make peace, then gun down Zora and Sanjar in the church with only their honour guards protecting them

- SubLight
This is the one I'm struggling with - I can't see a solution better than storming the offices on the Groundbreaker, and maybe I'd have to do the same in Fallbrook

- Groundbreaker
Continue Parvati's quest up until Junlei comes alone onto The Unreliable for a date... and then execute her right there in the kitchen :shifty:

You can see why I've put Groundbreaker last - I think that might be the most horrible thing I've ever thought to do in a game :dread:

Feel like I'm closing in on the end of this now. Just about to head off and rescue Phineas from the prison planet which should be fun!

And done! :toot:

Overall feeling - that was a really great game, but one that didn't quite live up to its potential.

The final area was a bit of a let down with it basically descending into a straight firefight - even if you try to stealth it the other factions just appear and trigger a fight anyway! :fp:

I really enjoyed the end game summary of your actions and the state it left the world in, they went into considerably more detail here than I was expecting which was nice. Often games that do this just say - "you chose the good options and the world was happy THE END!" so I enjoyed hearing a bit more detail here!

Yeah going to check back over the thread now and see what everyone else was saying!

Definitely going to give it at least one more shot to try out a different approach. I was a cocky tool for most of this run but in terms of actual actions I leaned toward being pretty kind, merciful and honourable so I have to go for a run that is full on Bastard Mode™

That's a nice touch.

I'm still on Monarch as I had to take a little break from this (had a little baby girl) but I did get a chance to play some yesterday.

Felt good to return and I enjoyed what I did. Finished the main quest line on Monarch and just have a few side quests to mop up. The faction siding choice feels a lot harder on this planet. Both sides are good with bad elements.
