Does anyone have a guide for installing a disc drive? I read one earlier but it hasn't mentioned anything about the IDE cable colours, sockets or anything.

Yeah it is. The guy included an IDE cable with three 'heads'. A green one, grey/blue and black.

I also don't understand this 'slave' mode. Any help is appreciated.

On your motherboard you'll have an IDE socket. It'll look like this;

The IDE cable should look like this;

If its IDE, you'll probably have molex power, which looks like this;

Master/Slave is determined on the order you want the drives on the IDE channel. Each IDE channel can carry two devices, as indicated by the fact that the cable has two plugs. If you are only using one device on the cable, set the jumper to master. If you are using two and the device is secondary to the other one on the channel, set the jumper to slave and set the other device to master.

Mounting the drive in the case should be simple enough if you can use a screwdriver and slide things backwards and forwards.

Once its in and the jumpers are set, plug the molex power in, then plug the IDE cable in to the drive and the other end into the socket on the motherboard. The IDE cable should only go one way, the female end has a space blanked and the male end has a bit on top which fits in the gap. Its essentially as simple as that. You may find that you have to change device priorities in the bios if you decided to run multiple devices etc, let me know if you need more help on that bit.

Thank you.

Because there is only 1 IDE slot on the motherboard should I leave it as Master even though I will have another disc drive connected using SATA?
Do the colours match up or are the cable 'head' colours irrelevant?
Do I need to wear shoes or some gooseberry fool to stop static electricity from breaking everything?
Also it didn't come with any screws. Is that going to be a big problem?

Master and slave means on that one IDE channel, the part of the cable with two ends plug into a master and a slave, or just a master if you only need one drive on that cable. The SATA drives are separate and always "master".

We should migrate GRcade to Flarum. :toot:

Ok, in order.

You can leave it as master as far as Im aware. The colours are irrelevant. Just touch the metal of the case to discharge yourself, dont wear nylon pants while rubbing yourself etc. The screws are to mount the drive in the drive cage, unless you have a screwless system.

Came across a hurdle straight away :lol:

Went to pop the cover off the extra drive places but there is metal in the way.

Tried lifting them up and removing them and even tried wiggling them until they snapped :shifty:

They're intended to stop dust from gathering in unused drive bays. You may also find similar covers over the real slots.

Why? The build is software agnostic.
