I'm using an Asus dongle to connect and I'm wondering whether it's the software for that causing the problem, might try uninstalling it and see what happens.

you shouldnt need any 3rd party software to connect on Win10; try uninstalling it for sure

You can also try finding out what chipset your Asus dongle uses and downloading the driver directly from the semiconductor manufacturer, installing it with Device Manager. It's nearly always a Ralink, Broadcom or Azalia chipset and their drivers are sometimes better than the ones automatically installed by Windows Update. I've never had any problems doing that with Ralink chipsets.

Edit: if it's an Asus it probbaly is a Ralink chipset, they are quite good, the parent company is now MediaTek and their chipset numbers begin with "MT" (or RT). https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ralink

Windows has never needed any kind of software install or tray utility to run at startup for managing Wifi connections since the Wireless Zero Configuration Utility (a service running with the OS unless it's been disabled) in XP SP2. If your USB device's chipset driver is installed, whatever brand on on the plastic casing, it will work. So I never install any of that stuff, or I install it to get the driver and then uninstall the pointless utility that comes with it, as it's just bloat and often buggy crap.

I just installed the Windows Creators Update and now my computer won't boot up. I keep getting a blue screen with a "It looks like Windows didn't load correctly" message, with the option below to repair or restart. Repairing doesn't seem possible, as it fails. I don't have a backup.

Edit: Oh hey look I can restore the previous version of Windows.

When I did the Windows 10 update on my tablet, MS really strawberry floated me over. The 10 update failed and the option to return to the previous version also didn't work, putting me in a groundhog Day style reboot loop. Fortunately I have access to Windows 10 keys and could do a fresh install but I suspect a small number of people end up with unusable hardware each time a significant update is released.

The Windows reversion worked, and I'm going to make a system restore point later, but I don't know what I'm going to do about this update if I can expect it to brick me when I install it.

It wont necaserally do it each time. It could ahve just have something go squiffy that time.

I think it might've been AVG.

My computer updated before I turned it off for the night yesterday evening (shutdown & update option). It started fine this morning, after a somewhat lengthy installation process, but then AVG updated itself and wanted to reboot too, so I let it do that. That's when the problem happened. When I reverted and booted successfully, AVG said it had updated successfully.

Don't use AVG, Windows defender is more than adequate virus protection.

I use that alongside Malware bytes and very rarely have any PC issues.

Try deleting the driver and restart, might update using something stored. If that doesn't work, look for a driver on your tablet you can then copy across.

edit: posting from the pc. I just deleted the driver and restarted. Seemed to update itself from there. Simple fix really, but properly gooseberry fool if you only have the pc with internet access, you'd have no hope of knowing that would work if you're not savvy.

I've got some questions about case fans and connectors. Apologies if this is really stupid.

I'm currently using a single 120mm exhaust fan and the fan on my CPU cooler to cool my PC. For intake I'm relying on the hole/grill in the case for a side fan and the natural gaps in the case between panels etc. I do have a smaller (8mm I think) side fan installed but it's not plugged in currently because it has this huge serial molex connector (two connectors, both about 1 inch, one male and one female), and all my other fans have tiny little ones (less than 1cm). I couldn't see anywhere to plug it into the motherboard, but the system was cool so I left it. Now I've finally got myself a graphics card I'm aware there will be a little bit more heat knocking around. Do I plug the little fan straight into one of the PSU cables directly or do I need to get an adapter to make it fit the little sysfan pins? Why does it have two connectors (LED?) Will a 12mm exhaust and a smaller intake be enough to cool a 1050ti?

im confused by your questions tbh
the graphics card always plugs directly into the PSU for its fans these days; there should be two cables that plug directly into the card itself.
if the 8mm fan has a molex connector then that too can plug directly into the psu
