The Official Pets Discussion Thread

Inspired by my dog-related derailing of the Car Thread, this is the place to talk pets. Any pets welcome, post your pics, ask questions, compare notes, what pets have you had, what do you like, what do you hate, give us funny video links, etc etc.
I currently have no pets, but WLTM a scary-ish looking guard dog for house protection, long walks on the beach and general companionship.
One of these would be grand:

I am more of a dog person but can't really have one as both I and my girlfriend work all day and it's not fair to leave one home alone.
She would like to get a house cat so we might end up with one eventually.

So cute! Dogs are brilliant
I quite want a dog that will be active at the right times, but will also be able to judge the mood when you want to mellow out in the evenings. This is my mum's dog - Border Terrier/Jack Russell cross. Cute as owt, but typical terrier temperament - he'll bring you a toy to play with, and if you ignore him, he'll assume you didn't like that toy and will keep on bringing you different ones until you've eventually got a huge pile of toys at your feet.

Any cat lovers here?
Because I live alone, I've been thinking of getting one to keep me company round the house and when i move back home in a while it'd be a good pet to keep my mum and dad company as they slowly slip into retirement age. Would a Cat be a suitable pet for me then do you think? I'm generally around the house the vast majority of the time and money isn't too much of an issue at the moment.

Took two of my ferrets to the vets this morning, one to be neutered the other to have a lump removed from his tail (which could be cancer). I hope they appreciate that I'll not be able to afford a stag party because of them

Had some fish ages ago...until someone I have no recollection of fed them crisps. And that was the end of that.

I had a dog (a grey Labrador) when I was about two or three, who had a habit of escaping from our garden and wandering around the streets, sometimes for days at a time (he once turned up at my Nan's house which was about 8 miles away). This went on for ages until one day he wandered off and never came back.
we never found out what happened to him

I love huskies, there seem to be tonnes near me, but it's the sheer hairiness of them that puts me off. That said, the puppies are beyond cute.

£150 on vets bills today. Now I've got to keep 2 very sociable ferrets in quarantine for 10 days. It's going to be a long 2 and a half weeks.
