I've read quite a few accounts of D-Day survivors that describe it as both the very worst and the very best day of their lives, as in it was the absolute pinnacle of them feeling alive and to be part of this great endeavour. I can understand that to a degree, but obviously add in Germans firing at you mercilessly and all your mates getting killed and it sort of takes the shine off it.
