PostThe Playlist Game - INTO THE UNKNOWN - Results Pg 5!
by more heat than light » Wed Apr 27, 2022 12:00 am

Awesome work again guys. The two week break doesn't seem to have dampened people's enthusiasm at all, and you've all met the difficult challenge this week really well. Thanks for all your efforts. :toot:

A reminder of this week's theme.

Playlist 5 - Into The Unknown

- For this week's playlist I'd like to see some obscure and undiscovered gems.
- Your playlist should consist of four or five tracks and last no longer than 20 minutes in total.
- You may not feature any artist that has already been included on any playlist during The Playlist Game.
- You may not include any song released as a single that has reached the UK Top 40.
- You may not include any song taken from an album which has reached the UK Top 20.
- Additionally, you may wish to link your tracks with a theme of your choosing.

I'd like you to PM me with your favourite five playlists, ranked from 1st to 5th. This can be the playlist you like the music best of, what you think fits the theme well, or just something you think is clever and original. It's entirely up to you.

Closing date for votes is 11.59 on Sunday. If you've entered I would ideally like a vote, you will score -5 for your playlist if you fail to do so. If you haven't entered you are still welcome to vote.

Please feel free to discuss the playlists in this thread, but please try to keep yours anonymous, this adds to the fun of the game.

You don't have to listen to every minute of every playlist to vote. Please try to enjoy the music as much as possible, but I want this competition to be a casual, fun way to share music. Enjoy it, and don't stress too much.

I know it's not in the spirit of this week's theme, but there's one playlist there with tracks I know and my immediate reaction was "ooh, that's a winner."

I know exactly what you mean. There's definitely some tracks for which 'obscure' is a bit of a stretch. Totally within the rules though!

Genuinely incredulous at a few of the songs that never charted either themselves or as part of an album. LCD Soundsystem!

Rock Band 3 classic in there too, whoever’s picked Lasso.

I am genuinely disappointed that there are two tracks from Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix and none of them are 1901.

Bankrupt! is a better album anyway :shifty:

5 Playlists down - bit of a mixed bag so far (unsurprising I guess with the theme!)

1 is solid, does exactly what it says on the tin.

2 was interesting and has a really cool vibe - but I'm not sure that I can feel myself getting too excited about any individual song on there.

3 is not my bag sadly, although Werewolves of London is always a great tune to hear

4 really surprised me - I wasn't sure what I was going to get, and whilst I can't say I love them all, I was pleasantly surprised.

5 was a theme I was strongly considering doing myself! Starlight Zone will always be an absolute classic whatever form it comes in!

I genuinely have no idea how 4 works as a theme (I'm guessing it's something to do with anime from the title). But like you I was pretty impressed!

Bankrupt! is great but Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix is about as close to a perfect indie-pop album as you could ever find. And yeah, surprised neither of the pickers went for 1901!

I can’t decide if it’s more unbelievable that All My Friends never broke the top 40, Sound of Silver never broke the top 20, or nobody has used an LCD Soundsystem track before this.

This week is my first entry or there'd have definitely been one in there before now. All My Friends is an absolute staple of my day

Disclaimer - the LCD Soundsystem playlist is not mine.

Just had a great idea for a totally different playlist after thinking of another artist who would be great for inclusion but I hadn't thought of before. :x

I've actually heard of Cornelius (playlist #12 ) before, only familiar with the track Drop as it used to regularly appear on MTV2 in the late evening when they'd play more obscure stuff (introduced me to the music of Aphex Twin and Squarepusher too).

Had a first run through them all. Overall, it's been a bit of a mixed bag for me too, though there were 2 lists that stood out. Well, 3 if I include my own 8-)

A few thoughts after an initial blast through:

Stone Broken - I'm familiar with their singles, Planet Rock play them quite a bit, but hadn't heard this particular song before, I need to give their albums a proper listen at some point.

Mass Of The Fermenting Dregs - Just going off this song, I went to check if this was some sort of At The Drive In/Mars Volta spin off since the vocals seem pretty similar. Turns out they're a female fronted Japanese band at the heavier end of indie! Not bad at all.

OK Go - I've definitely seen the video for this song before, but I don't recall the actual tune at all, which for me is the case for most of their songs, probably unfairly!

This is the case for me with OK Go too. Some incredible music videos cover up some fairly mediocre music. This one isn't too bad though.
