PostThe Playlist Game - WHAT'S MY THEME? - Results (pg7)
by more heat than light » Thu May 12, 2022 11:58 pm

Blah blah blah, amazing standard, blah blah awesome effort everyone. But seriously, thank you for your continued support in this game! :msgreen:

A reminder of this week's theme.

Playlist 7 - What's My Theme?

- Each player must select a Playlist Name from a list, generated by the insane people at Chosic.
- These names are exclusively one per player and are offered on a first come, first served basis.
- Please try to create a playlist in the theme of your chosen list. You may interpret the theme however you wish.
- Your playlist should last no longer than 20 minutes in total.
- All songs must be currently available on Spotify.

I'd like you to PM me with your favourite five playlists, ranked from 1st to 5th. This can be the playlist you like the music best of, what you think fits the theme well, or just something you think is clever and original. It's entirely up to you.

Closing date for votes is 11.59 on Thursday 19th May. If you've entered I would ideally like a vote, you will score -5 for your playlist if you fail to do so. If you haven't entered you are still welcome to vote.

Please feel free to discuss the playlists in this thread, but please try to keep yours anonymous, this adds to the fun of the game.

You don't have to listen to every minute of every playlist to vote. Please try to enjoy the music as much as possible, but I want this competition to be a casual, fun way to share music. Enjoy it, and don't stress too much.

Made a start on my cycle into work.

1 - no thanks.
2 - I kind of get what you're doing but I just don't like the repetition (when you can't see your phone you kind of assume Spotify broke the first time around).
3 - fits the theme but I hate it, I get the feeling that someone could have worked Tool into an 'Ambient chillout' title.

3 did drown out the road noise.

Edit: Also, I haven't got to 10 yet, but strawberry floating bravo for that listing. Has me in stitches.

I don't need to listen to Neon Pop Favourites to know it's an absolute banger

I can kind of appreciate the setup of #1, death followed by the descent into Hell and all that, but musically it's just not doing much for me sadly

Ironically, given the theme, #2 kind of just washed over me leaving no real lasting impression. As waves go it was about as sexy as this one:

Really like that IRL song in Playlist 1.

I do have the Megamix on though and thought I was already on Playlist 2, such is the contrast to the rest of Playlist 1

I think the snippets Spotify have used for the previews have absolutely done me dirty this week

If anyone is voting based solely on the Spotify previews they're not playing the game right.

I use them for narrowing down what to listen to in full, because I don’t have the time to get through them all. If all the previews are excruciating, and definitely no hope of being anywhere near the top 5, that’ll be all I listen to of it.

Yeah there's no obligation to listen to the whole lot. I'm blessed with a lot of spare time so I get through everything at least twice before the deadline, but I wouldn't expect anyone else to make that kind of time investment.

I listen to everything in full but if a song isn't working for me I'll just skip forward

Once the authors are revealed, id be interested to know how some of the album titles have been interpreted into thier song choices. Many are obvious, some are tenuous, but others i just cant see any link.

Some were a lot easier than others to be fair.

I haven't listened to them all yet but there are only a couple that don't seem obvious from the list alone and I'm assuming they will make more sense when I've listened to them. I thought Playlist 14 was a pretty clever way of meeting the title.

Time to dive right in... to the comments!

But what about those cases where the random, arbitrary sample that Spotify selected isn't representative of the song at all? As an example, spare a thought for poor... er, you:

jiggles wrote:I think the snippets Spotify have used for the previews have absolutely done me dirty this week

It seems daft to judge maybe almost 20 minutes of music, specifically selected and ordered to meet a certain theme, on 120 seconds randomly cut from 4 snippets of the entirety. But that's just my opinion. As MHTL says there are no rules on how you vote.

Tomous wrote:I listen to everything in full but if a song isn't working for me I'll just skip forward

To me that's a fairer approach. I get that not everyone may have the time, but this week we have over a week to listen.

Genuinely unsure how this is the case. I haven't had chance to start listening yet but I can see how the songs meet at least part of each theme. Which can't you see a link for?
