In recognition of MHTL's efforts over the past few months in running eight rounds of The Playlist Game, those of us who've played so far decided to secretly create a bonus ninth round, themed entirely around his own previous selections (and therefore, theoretically by extension, his musical taste). Thanks to everyone who has contributed - both those who have submitted playlists, and those who added to (or simply endured!) our surreptitious PM back-and-forth. :lol:

Week 9 Rules wrote:Playlist 9 - No, Thank You For The Music

- You must select a song used previously by more heat than light in The Playlist Game. This should be a song you've enjoyed personally, preferably one that was new to you (although obviously I can't police this!)
- If a song was chosen in Week 8 by you or another player, that does not exclude this song from selection in Week 9.
- You should build a playlist which puts this song in a new context. For instance it might be a song used in a 'word' type list which you feel might sit better in a list of similar genre songs. Maybe something from the short week where it might work with an epic or two. Or maybe a song from a metal list which you feel might sit better in a list of disco bangers. It's up to you.
- The song you choose must be included in your playlist exactly as picked by the other player. No covers, interpretations or different versions.
- Your playlist can include up to five tracks and last no longer than 20 minutes in total.
- All songs must be currently available on Spotify.
- Deadline is 11.59pm on Saturday 28th May (GMT) (flexible)
- Please PM me (Herdanos) your tracks. Let's keep things anonymous, it makes it more fun. Obviously some vague discussion in the thread is fine.

I'd like you to PM me (Herdanos) with your favourite five playlists, ranked from 1st to 5th. This can be the playlist you like the music best of, what you think fits the theme well, or just something you think is clever and original. It's entirely up to you.

Closing date for votes is 11:59pm on Sunday 5th June . If you've entered I would ideally like a vote, you will score -5 for your playlist if you fail to do so. If you haven't entered you are still welcome to vote.

Please feel free to discuss the playlists in this thread, but please try to keep yours anonymous, this adds to the fun of the game.

You don't have to listen to every minute of every playlist to vote. Please try to enjoy the music as much as possible, but I want this competition to be a casual, fun way to share music. Enjoy it, and don't stress too much.

For simplicity let's call the current week in-thread (that MHTL is running) Week 8. Our planned secret "bonus round" is Week 9.

The deadline for Week 8 is midnight tonight (presuming you're in the UK), although MHTL has said in the thread he is OK with late submissions if you want to play.

If I recall rightly (please correct me if I'm wrong!) MHTL intends a voting deadline of midnight next Sunday (May 29th) for Week 8.

As such, I expect he'll post the final results on the morning of Monday 30th May, as well as "wrapping up" the game. It's at that point that, ideally, I'd like to spring this surprise on him. However, my working pattern means that'll be difficult with a deadline the same as the Week 8 voting deadline - if I get lots of late submissions I'll struggle to compile them in time.

With that in mind I'd like to propose a submission deadline for "Week 9" of midnight Saturday. That gives you all next week, plus one weekend day, to create and submit your MHTL inspired playlists, and me one weekend day to put them together. Hope that's cool with everyone!

I intend on giving MHTL the option of being the one to receive the votes if he wishes. It's his game and he may want to be the one to know what everyone's individual thoughts are. That being said, he did choose to end the game at that point, so may not want to do any more gamerunning! If he doesn't want to I'll receive and collate the votes.

I asked OR to put us in this section for the week; figured this would be much easier than PM-ing (and prevents people from having 30+ messages awaiting them, simply because they're busy IRL!)

One thing we haven't necessarily hashed out: what do we think about duplicates? Obviously we already discussed in the PM chat that there are only about 30 tracks to choose from, but even if different people choose the same track to build their playlist around, they'll still create different playlists. Thoughts?

Oh and credit where credit's due as this wasn't my idea!

Just an update on these... I've received a submitted Week 9 playlist, but having read our group PM exchanges again, someone else has already stated they're planning on building their playlist around that same song. So I guess we're having some duplicates! :lol:

I genuinely don't think it's a problem, personally - they'll still be different playlists.

I don’t see an issue with people using the same song on a “week nine” playlist - the point here is not to show off our musical taste and playlist making ability, it’s to show MHTL that we really appreciated him running the game. So if a couple of people want to go with the same song and different playlists, that’s fine by me.

Tl;dr - duplication’s not an issue.

Yeah, I'm fine with duplicates myself, I think the chances of two people coming up with the same playlist from an identical starting song are pretty slim. In fact, that would have been a good playlist challenge - here's a song, come up with a playlist that fits it.

How is everyone finding this so far? Is it a bit trickier to consider and collate a new playlist, while listening to / voting on the "previous" week's playlists is happening simultaneously?

Everyone still OK for 11:59pm (GMT) this coming Saturday as a submission deadline? I've figured out how to add custom images to Spotify playlists too, so feel free to include those too if you wish

Bumping this as I've only got two playlists in so far and the deadline is tomorrow night!

Mine is pretty much done, just need to par it down to 5 songs so it will be in for tomorrow night

One thought, MHTL will be focused on the Forest game tomorrow so don't pass it over until after that.

Yeah, I'm going to wait until after he posts the week 8 results, so it'll be Monday I expect.

I had figured a deadline of tonight to give me time to put all the playlists together, but it's been straightforward enough to do them as they come in. So I'm OK with any submissions tomorrow, if no one objects.
