Going off on a tangent, it's the most typically Tomb Raider-ish game they've done since Anniversary, with the most visually appealing and lavish environments of the 3 - graphically it has to be the most impressive there is from the last generation besides Red Dead Redemption 2 - and a number of intelligent and actually quite brilliant 'now what?' puzzles that firmly plant you back in legacy territory, though having rewatched the Angelina Jolie films earlier this year it only exemplifies to me what's wrong with the current series of rebooted games, and as much as I've enjoyed them (the 1st was the best in terms of just being a great game) there's no escaping, to me at least, that their reimagining of the character just isn't really Lara Croft. It's all a bit too po-faced for its own good. 'Ah, but it's building to her
becoming the Lara Croft we all know and love'. Well yes, but it never actually gets there, does it?
Lara is supposed to be: Hot, lively, confident, bold, feisty, full of spirit, athletic, cheeky, quick witted, clever...and so on and so forth. Or to quote Urban dictionary:
sassy - possessing the attitude of someone endowed with an ungodly amount of cool. And it's that Lara Croft that is still portrayed in the imagery of the spin offs Guardian of Light, and The Temple of Osiris, and yet almost completely eludes the main games, beyond her confidence to now Rambo everyone to death - which as it turns out is usually at odds with the overall tone of the cut scenes - all while bogged down in copious amounts of needless exposition that has only managed to make the character more unrelatable (as Jonah routinely and rightfully points out). And how many collectables does one person need.
^ This woman just never turns up, unfortunately. Here's hoping the next one is just Lara Croft on the hunt for the Dagger of Bullshit that brings about some deity when there's a total eclipse or whatever, leaving us to gallivant around Egyptian tombs and illegally motorboat around Venice IN PEACE. Can you remember the plot of the first 5 Tomb Raiders & Anniversary? Did it matter that the plot was fag-packet stuff? No. And played today, Anniversary is still the best one. If ever there was an adventure series where the environment is the plot, Tomb Raider is it. Plot synopsis: Lara Croft walks onto the set of Jurassic Park. Why? Dunno. 10/10.
