Mind. Blown.

I don't know if anyone else saw the same episode of Only Connect as me, but apparently the X button means "No". Circle means "Yes" (i.e. the Japanese equivalent of a tick, hence why in certain games it's the forward button on menus). Square means "Menu" (it sort of looks like a menu) and Triangle means "Home" (it looks like a roof).

That obviously could lead to confusion with down, but as I no longer call down down I just call down ex down instead. Sometimes when playing games with friends, I'll tell them they need to press down so they press down, but actually they needed to press ex (which is down) rather than ex down (which used to be down). This makes them cross.

The original Metal Gear Solid is the only game I can think of that actually used Circle to confirm and X to cancel in the menu options, rather than the other way around like the majority of games.
