The placement of the sticks.

How the strawberry float have I never realised that before?

Mind. Blown.

I don't know if anyone else saw the same episode of Only Connect as me, but apparently the X button means "No". Circle means "Yes" (i.e. the Japanese equivalent of a tick, hence why in certain games it's the forward button on menus). Square means "Menu" (it sort of looks like a menu) and Triangle means "Home" (it looks like a roof).

Nah, they just took the Magikoopa shapes and used them on the pad to say strawberry float you to Nintendo for partnering with Phillips. Which is why Magikoopa only have 3 shapes now :(

I quite like this attempt at consistent thinking that went into it. Triangle was also supposed to be used for changing the camera in games as the triangle represents a view cone!

Personally I just call ex down, given it's the bottom button in that arrangement of four. That obviously could lead to confusion with down, but as I no longer call down down I just call down ex down instead. Sometimes when playing games with friends, I'll tell them they need to press down so they press down, but actually they needed to press ex (which is down) rather than ex down (which used to be down). This makes them cross.

The thing that unites Switch, Keyboards and Microsoft is the X button, but Playstation is all alone with it's cross.

Bravo, Microsoft  :toot: .

All I can think when looking at that is that Microsoft really made no attempt to hide the fact that they pinched the layout from Nintendo

"Yeah, let's call the face buttons A, B, X & Y"
"Erm, isn't someone already doing that?"
"Nah, Sony use shapes."
"But what about Nint-"
*whistles*

They could have at least switched them to M, X, B & O.

The original Metal Gear Solid is the only game I can think of that actually used Circle to confirm and X to cancel in the menu options, rather than the other way around like the majority of games.

Xbox controller buttons were likely inspired by Sega's Dreamcast controller:

I think Zone of the Enders did as well, so basically Konami are the only ones fighting the good fight
