Just spotted that both the NES and NES Mini Classic are over £260 on Amazon, while the megadrive classic is £150 and even the much maligned PlayStation classic has gone up in price to £80.

I was lucky enough to get the SNES mini at launch and the nes mini when they became more widely available second time round and I even got the PlayStation classic (reduced to £20 in John Lewis) I’d been meaning to add to the set with the mega drive following glowing reviews and was tempted when I saw it in Asda for £60 but clearly, I waited too long. what has happened? Are these out of production now?

Until I saw how much I could get for my PS Mini, I was using it as a monitor prop

That seems artificially high. I'm pretty sure you can still just buy the snes classic off the shelves (well saying that, I've not been in a shop for a year, but I used to see them a lot).

I don’t think you can unfortunately, luckily I have the Nintendo machines but definitely not prepared to drop £150 to play Altered Beast again. I see the Nintendo machines are three figures in cex too.

I wonder if these experiments were successful, did these mini consoles sell enough to justify a future mini Dreamcast / N64 / PS2?

If the game roms were of a manageable size, it hink we'd have seen them already, but we've now got to the end of the consoles with a few mb per game, and are now in to 500mb+ per game, and that means the consoles would need lots more memory, which drives the cost up and makes them less viable.

Edit: although saying that, we got the PlayStation and that was CD based games, so maybe I mean DVD/GDrom sized games.

N64 games are still comparatively small so I could see a retro console for that working easily enough, but yeah as soon as you get to the optical media machines it becomes considerably more expensive to store more than a couple of games!

SNES Mini is selling (used) for £60-100 on eBay, although new ones for much more so presumably there's no more in production.

As cute as the miniature consoles look, better to setup a Raspberry Pi with RetroPie or Lakka & play every game on the console, instead of a tiny selection.

I have gameboy, gameboy colour, gameboy advance, nes, snes, megadrive, mega CD & 32x games on mine. You can also have mame if you want it.

Edit: this is on my snes I mean

My PC is hooked up in my living room so I just use Retroarch, but before that I got some decent mileage out of my Pi.

Tempted to upgrade to a Pi4 though, just to see what it can handle. I backed a nice little heatsink case for a 4 a while ago, but it's just been sat gathering dust.

I have 2 mini SNES consoles, a mini NES , the mini megadrive, the PS Classic and the mini PC Engine console. The 2 SNES ones I got on release 1 to keep as is the other to hack, I got the NES during it's second run, grabbed the PlayStation cheap and the other half got me the Megadrive and PC Engine, as Christmas and Birthday presents.

The hacked mini SNES has had the most use , it's basically had more use than all the others combined. The PC Engine has had the least use.

I just grabbed a second mini Megadrive boxed complete from a pawn store for £40, will probably hack this one.
