Also got bottles of Monkey Shoulder and Chivas Regal. I'm finding the Monkey shoulder ok the Chivas not so much.

Yeah I started with Irish whiskey, particularly Bushmills and Jameson and they are a fair bit smoother than other mainstream tipples. In terms of Scottish whisky a safe bet would be a Speyside like Balvenie or Glenfarclas, as in my opinion they're far easier to drink than an Islay (which are the smokier and peatier) like Talisker.

Thanks, I'll put them on my list. Going to take while to get through what I've already got though!

Anyone tried the Tullamore D.E.W? Any good? Was thinking of going for that one but the Black Bush was on sale.

I've finished a bottle of this before I got my latest batch. Well it was a Jura, not sure what type.

From what I remember, it was pretty hard going at first.

But after I'd decantered it and left it for a while it seemed to get better - I've found this with a few I've tried, Gentleman Jack another one.

I've stuck the Chivas in the decanter (Monkey Shoulder bottle looked better too) hoping it'll help.

Hi Ste, really don't mean to be a smart arse but all this decanting things is a load of nonsense - you shouldn't do it. From the moment you decant a wine, a whisky, whatever, it is 'going off' in the sense that it is oxidising with exposure to the air. This is not a good thing! This is why you should never open a bottle for red wine and pour it out to 'breath' before a meal. It's doing no such thing, it's just spoiling.

Don't believe me I'll let you do your own internet research bu Jane McQuitty, (The Times wine writer), is a good place to start. She dispels an awful lot of untruths on wine and booze and her recommendations are usually very good.

Hi still - I don't think your being a smart arse, always interested in other peoples suggestions/thoughts etc.

I'll look into what she has to say.

That said, while I'm a whisky novice I've got plenty of experience when it comes to red wine and I definitely think it helps to decant that - I've just decanted a couple of bottles now ready for later!

Hi Ste, we always used to open up red wine and let it 'breath' before a meal. (Like you I have plenty of experience........, err, far too much.) Completely stopped it now though.

Edit: I thought I'd save you some time and post a link to an article on The Times website, completely forgetting that the Times website is subscription only..... Try this instead:-

I chug red wine straight from bottle, pouring it into a glass is for idiots.

Also, ste - The Dalmore is an extremely nice whisky, add that to your list.

You can get perfectly drinkable whiskey for less than £20, but I get everyone has a budget to stick to and whiskey is something of a luxury.

That's only really for wine though. Looking at similar sites about whisky decanting suggests that if the seal is airtight it doesn't really do anything to the flavour. You can probably expect a bit of alcohol evaporation over time but nothing that you wouldn't get if you just left it in an opened retail bottle.

And ten months later, the next post is also about Glenfiddich. I saw their new "Orchard Experiment" advertised on Saturday, and wanted to try it. Tesco don't stock it, so my online grocery order is no good. Amazon had it but would deliver on Sunday, which I didn't want, so I delayed ordering for a day. Now, presumably thanks to the advertising, Amazon says "usually dispatched within 1-2 months". Fuckit.

Looks like I’m just pissing into the void, posting here, but I’m not going to stop. I’ve managed to get a bottle of the Orchard Experiment, and it’s really good. It’s not going to win over anyone who doesn’t already like Glenfiddich, but the apple flavour (it’s finished in Pomona spirit casks) is very subtle. Unsurprisingly, it’s in a completely different league to the artificial Jack Daniels Apple stuff. An interesting thing, worth a try.

I really like Glenfiddich, especially the Solera 15, and I saw the Orchard Experiment in the airport but held off buying it. You're really tempting me here!

I don’t think you’d be disappointed! RRP seems to be £42, but Amazon and Sainsbury's both have it for £32, which isn’t much more than you’d pay for the 12yo.

In this warm weather I've been tending towards Japanese whiskey highballs as my drink of choice. Just finished a bottle of Suntory Toki. I'll probably buy another one. I tried making a highball using Monkey Shoulder but it wasn't as good.

Or I could buy one of these and not tell my fiancée where the wedding money went:
