I don't tend to like it with water, no. I may make an exception for an interesting rare malt such as this though. Would be a great addition to the collection.

The other day I had a glass of "The Dragon" a malt whisky which comes from Orkney. The date on the bottle was 1961!

I agree with both statements.

One of my favourites is Dalwhinnie, both thanks to its smooth taste and the fact that I spent a holiday there. In the town, not in the brewery, I've only been there for an hour or two.

I think bottled whisky is always diluted unless it's "cask strength" such as the bottle Gil posted. In which case you're supposed to "dilute to taste".

It's like the difference between buying Vimto neat or in those little cartons that come with a straw.

So far this year, I have eaten NO mince pies.

Deep down I realise you are supposed to dilute with water to taste most whiskies (if you are doing a proper 'tasting'), otherwise the taste can be masked by the stinging alcohol burn on the tongue. As I broaden my whisky horizons I will probably dabble with this in order to start detecting the subtleties in the different brands. Despite this, the bracing feeling you get from drinking it neat cannot be matched.

EDIT: The same goes with Vimto.

Well, if you're determined to get it, Mocky, set aside about £80. That's what it cost us back in 2003 when we got it from the Whisky shop on the Royal Mile in Embra.

There are a couple of reviews here that give a good indication of its flavours. It's so good that Michael Jackson drank it. Wowzers.

To summarise: Sweet and caramelised; marmalade on toast; oaky, aggressive....just a bloody good drink.

That guide price is far too optimistic. Prepare yourself to depart with a figure more like mine, and you won't be so shocked.

The power of suggestion is not to be underestimated. I feel like stopping off at my local offy and picking up a bottle of good quality whiskey myself now. Plus some Vimto.

It's named after my surname so i'm biased but Glen Ord is probably my favourite whiskey. It's peaty as strawberry float and sweet and it goes down so smoothly it's scary. lovely stuff!

I got a very nice bottle of 15 year old Glenmorangie for christmas, I have had a couple of tipples out of it but it's so bloody nice I don't want to drink it because i will be gutted when there is none left. So i have been stuck drinking the bottle of teachers i got from work. No substitute really. :(

Just as a heads-up: Oz and James are heading up to Scotchland to taste various whiskies at 8.00 on BBC2.

Should be interesting.

That's what I thought!

Anything that makes May dispense with his usual bullshit-guard, and wax verbose, is worth checking out.

It'll probably be about £200 a nip, though.

Great programme.

I've long enjoyed whisky, but for some reason I've never actually bought a bottle myself, or a proper whisky glass for that matter. I've now got my eye on a bottle of Ancnoc in Oddbins. 8-)

My best friend really likes his whisky though. Amusingly, he asked his parents for a nice bottle for Christmas, expecting a decent single malt, only to end up with... Bell's. :|

Am I just being a ponce here? I still struggle to enjoy the burning sensation of whisky going down. I want to like it, but I just can't.

Well, you could always try Bells. The burning sensation gets about as far as the back of your mouth. ;)

Well, bizarrely Odbins only had a £40 16 year old bottle of An Cnoc in stock, although the woman at the counter said they do get the 12 year old one in every now and then. Not wanting to wait though, I went for the next best thing and bought a bottle of 12yr old Knockando, which I'll make a start on tonight. It's been ages since I had a really good whiskey. :)

Feeling in the mood, I went hunting for a decent set of tumblers too. I ended up discovering a set of four Kensington Crystal ones for £20, down from £40 over at House of Fraser, so that's me sorted. No more Argos Value ( ) glasses for me!
