Whisky's pretty much the only type of alcohol I really can't stand. :(

Though JD + coke (I know, I know, it's not proper whisky) is alright.

What would be the best bottle for around £20, which I can get from the supermarket? I'll want to try it with water/ice/carbonated water as well so something that goes well like that would be good.

You can get some pretty decent single malts for £20-£25 in Tesco. The Yamazaki I describe in the first post was £26 and that's splendid.

I spotted that one yesterday and spent a moment trying to place where I heard the name.

I can't find it on the Tesco website though (there's no Tesco near me). The only other big supermarket nearby is ASDA; will they have it there?

I don't know if they will have Yamazaki, but all the big supermarkets have a selection of decent single malts. Pop down there and have a look.

Their online stock is here:

http://www.asda.com/asda_shop/sys/web_d ... alt+Whisky

If they have any of those instore, you can't go wrong. Laphroaig, Jura, Glenmorangie, Arbelour. Others mentioned in this thread. I recommend the Talisker or Macallan though, they're very nice. Though a bit on the pricier end.

Just before christmas I scattered my dad's ashes into the falls of Barvick (My dad and I scattered my mum at the same spot about 7 years before). Guess what I got for christmas?

About 2 litres of Famous Grouse, which is just down stream from the falls. Guess how much of it I have drank. All of it! Bit of a smoky grittiness to it.*

*(This post is purely for comedy reasons, as being a blended whisky the whisky used in Famous grouse will not actually have been made using the water that came from the stream.)

That's a good list.

I forgot about Highland Park. Used to ask for that all the time when I was out.

Aye, I admit I'll quite happily drink any of the ten listed, especially if someone else is buying ! (highly unlikely...)

I've had the Auchentoshan before, it's quite spectacular.

Talisker has just become my next in line. I thought I'd go for a peaty one, and this looks more interesting than "just" that.

Seeing as I have a decent bottle of whisky in the flat now, I was wondering how I could dispose of the remains of the bottle of Bells a friend dumped on me. I thought I'd make myself a cup of Irish (Is it still Irish when the whisky's Scottish?) Coffee. It was bad.

Don't knock it pal, at least you've actually done it. You're like some grizzled TV cop.

Just put a tiny drop of water in it then - I always wondered why but watching 'oz and james' this week it apparently releases the heavier molecules in the whisky - just a tiny drop mind !

Well, why not just put it in a cupboard somewhere and keep it a s a reward for when you achieve your goal ? Got to be better than guzzling it for the sake of it, (here speaks the voice of experience unfortunately.....)

I've had half a bottle of Bells sitting unwanted on my bedside table for a couple weeks (it was acquired at new year). Nasty stuff! It gets occasional use as a nightcap.

I need to borrow an rllmuk emote for this. Knockando. Image

I like it more the more I drink. I've got a bit of a sweet tooth, and this happens to have a lovely sweet, nutty edge to it that I really enjoy. Usually I'm not one to drink on my own at home, but I actually look forward to a bit of this in the evening. For a first choice, I'm chuffed.
