Bourbon's an American spirit made from corn, whilst whisky is made from grain mash, sometimes that grain can be corn, though is more usually barley or rye.

I'm a fan of Paddy's.
I had it late one night at a expensive hotel.

In France, it is £9 a bottle, in UK it is £24.

It's now my favourite Whisky ever.

Always keep a bottle handy... for close encounters.

Oooh, cheers Lewis. I'm putting that on my list! I trust your recommendation.

Yay! :D

I'll try and describe it's taste to you. (Also means I've an excuse for a few sneaky drams... :shifty: )

*Tastes*

I'd usually describe the smell, but my nose is well strawberry floated, :D You do get a fantastic scent of lemons and Caramel though, usually.
It's got a really smooth and incredible sweet taste to it. The sweetness then flattens out and you get a really nice warmth and woodiness that lingers for ages on the tongue. It's a great Whisky, and I recommend everyone buy some :D

That sounds great but i'm baulking at the £7 delivery cost. Is there a decent whisky you can buy in the shops that tastes nice and sweet and lingering like that one? It's for a Xmas present, btw.

Assuming that's Ancnoc, you can sometimes get it in Oddbins for about £25. I'd go for Knockando over that though, which is up there with Yamazaki as my favourite, and they're both "sweet and lingering". The last time I looked, my local Oddbins had stopped doing that though. :(

EDIT: Not to knock (heh) Ancnoc mind, as that's rather nice. Ancnoc is more citrusy than Knockando, and I prefer the latter's woodier taste.

I had a friend over on the weekend incidentally, who I ended up finishing off my current supply of Knockando and The Glenlivet with. He then ordered me a bottle of 16 year old Lagavulin, which should be here on Thursday. I like him.

I've just been given a bottle of Chivas Regal 12 year Scotch Whiskey, for Christmas.

Is it any good?

It's not bad and it's certainly very popular. Personally I prefer single malts to blended whiskys (sp?), but Chivas Regal is in a different league to Bells, Teachers, etc...

Hot Toddy anyone?

So far this year, I have eaten NO mince pies.

Please.

Grants is good for a hot toddy. There is something about it that makes it particularly smooth.

I nearly bought a bottle of Talisker today...

But I was reluctant because I've never had it before.
Any thoughts? (Tony? Anny?) What's it like?

Deep, smokey and a bit fruity. It's very nice. :)

Speaking of nice, the Lagavulin's arrived. I'll be sampling some of that later.

I seem to remember Talisker being very smoky. Not quite to my tastes.

I've not had it myself but it is supposed to be a very decent Irish malt.

Lagavulin is amazing. The taste seems to change a little with every sip, so I'm not even going to try to describe it conclusively. It tasted quite grassy to start with, and smelt that way too, but it has a sweeter edge which comes out after a while, and all kinds of flavours I can't place yet. I'm not sure I like it as much as Knockando and Yamazaki yet, but it's clearly rather special.

As a total whisky n00b, what's a good bottle to try as a way of getting into it all? I tried some Bells a while back which was rank.

Anything cheap and good to try out first? Only looking at supermarkets really, so nothing too exclusive.

Try Highland Park 12 year old. I think it's quite cheap at the moment due to Christmas sales. Fairly sure I saw it in tesco for about £20. It's a fantastic whisky.

Failing that, may I recommend Johnnie Walker Black Label, which can also be found at a similar price range.

You can't go wrong with either of these.

Thanks very much my man. I've noticed Tesco seem to have a good choice of those mentioned in earlier posts, with many on offer. I went in to my local oddbins yesterday and they also had a few on offer as well. Ancnoc was around £23 (IIRC). I think i will go back tomorrow and ask for some advice. Cheers!

Oh, btw, i tried a shot of Cragganmore when i was out the other night and i rather liked it. Could really savour it!
