I think I need to make sure I keep a supply of both Speyside and Islay whisky with me, rather than one bottle at a time. I've developed quite a taste for peaty stuff, but sometimes I get a craving for something sweeter.

Lagavulin really is lovely though.

Ok, Another whisky noob here. I really like JD and have had SoCo (but was already pretty smashed at the time) and would like some tips on what to try next. Im getting a small bottle of Jim Beam for crimbo to try, I believe thats similar to JD?

I dont have a lot of money to burn, so no big expensive ones yet, at least till I know what I like. Ta.

Oh, that's easy... something that is A) An actual Whisky and B)Good. ;)

:fp:

Start off with Monkey Shoulder mate, that's what I'd do.
It's cheap as strawberry float (Comparable to JD price) and tastes ok, neither too harsh or offensive.

Let us know how you get on.

This thread and the fact that it's Christmas have convinced me to buy a bottle tomorrow. I doubt I'll be going much further than the Co-Op, so it's more than likely going to be JD. The only drink I currently have in is Carlsberg, cheap vodka and Cactus Jack Apple; I think I deserve something a little nicer. Is there anything rather Christmassy that's not too hard to find?

I opened my Laphroaig 10 earlier this year, after my friend bought it for me in 2007. Was lovely, although 2 of us drank the entire bottle in a few hours. What a waste; I could have been drinking Toilet Duck after a couple of glasses. I couldn't taste a thing. I can still see the space on my bookshelf it held :(

I've decided to go for that wonderful non-whiskey Southern Comfort, as my gf will drink that too.

Less for me though :(

You're planning on drinking from 9 in the morning on Christmas day and you're spending the day with your girlfriend? It sounds like a Ray Carver short story.

I just bought me a bottle of Jim Beam. strawberry float the haters.

I've lived with her for 5 years; might be a little odd if I'm not there...

I don't know who Ray Carver is. He sounds like someone I'd hear on the radio and tune out.

That's a shame. I bought a bottle of Dalwhinnie 15 year old yesterday and had a few shots with a mate but we were drinking bottles of lager and having a shot inbetween bottles to savour it. We only had about 8-10 shots between us, so i've still got loads left.

The Dalwhinnie comes in a nice cream box and the bottle is a very nice 'squat' type with a cork. As for the flavour, it was a little harsher than i imagined but still quite sweet and 'honeyed' with a hint of vanilla but it lingers for about 5 minutes afterwards - beautiful. I would recommend it for the aesthetics (bottle, packaging etc) over the taste because it ain't cheap at £29 per bottle (although i used an £8 nectar voucher at Sainsbury's) but it is luxurious.

Sorry to bring a non-Whisky drink into this thread... but I've nowhere else to seriously discuss other alchohol! :(

My brother just returned from the shop with a bottle of this:

Image

Now, I'm not a Rum drinker, but this stuff is delicious! :D
You really get the Vanilla on the nose right away, followed by Cinnamon.
Then the sweetness of the limes comes in and you get a proper Butterscotch/Toffee smell.
Then you taste it and get Cinnamon, Star Anise and Vanilla pod - Followed heartily by a WHACK of Sweet Rum.

And, funnily enough, the after taste is like... like Drumstick lollies! :D
It also Beads quite well - although the beads are a bit fast - on the walls of my Whisky glass.

I'm going to enjoy necking the rest of that bottle with him over the next few days. Image

Yeah, a nice whisky mate. Pretty much an all rounder in my eyes.
Floral, sweet and rich.

I wouldn't choose it though, given the choice of, say, half a dozen good single malts.
