Aww strawberry float man, I loved their cakes.

The writing was on the wall when I heard that the chief exec had sold all his luxury cars last winter and suddenly stopped financing his racing team. Seems there’s a lot more to this than widely reported.

Hopefully someone will take it over, as it was bad management which damaged the business, not the lack of customers.

Hope the Merry Hill Druckers survives for a while longer :shifty:

I think there might be something dodgy going on. Apparently, there was a 20 mill hole in the pension pot and now they've found a 10 million loan the board didn't know about.

This latest high street closure really takes the cake.

Seems like a pretty crap cut. I really like getting a bit of fresh baked bread from the supermarket.

Yeah Patisserie Valerie is run pretty badly from what I can see and personally while I find the cakes they offer alright I don’t think they’re worth anywhere near the asking price which probably doesn’t help them.

Also, being in a similar job myself to the counter staff at Tesco it really wouldn’t surprise me if the other big supermarkets follow suit, or at least have a huge trim on the operating hours of such departments as having them open near enough the stores opening times makes little sense, especially when some evenings you can go an hour plus without actually serving anyone.

I wonder if independent high street butchers will be celebrating this news.

Supermarket bakeries have always been a bit of a sham, with most products (usually the desserts) shipped in like a regular prepackaged item and sold in such a way as to make the customer believe it’s fresh or been cooked on site. Until recently you never would have known ring doughnuts for example were being sent in frozen (often from Germany) and then defrosted.

Lidl in store bakery is lovely. Those Portuguese egg custard tarts for under 50p each or as good as get in a great bakery. M and S in-store bakery is the king though. A different level of tasty and very cheap.

I was a store manager and all our products in the “in store bakery” came in frozen, some such as bread, sausage rolls, cookies etc required cooking but a lot just needed defrosting, they even came in packed and labelled you just had to put a best before sticker on it

Also during my time there was a big shift away from deli counters with most of the stores in my region completely removing them, some stores were not even told and just had a couple of people turn up to take the actual deli counter away while staff were working on it!

With Tesco it’s a shame they are making this move move because when I go shopping I like buying fresh things and trying new things and I am willing to pay a premium for a good selection where as this I feel will be a step back, Morrison’s however must spend a fortune on staff it’s full of various counters
